Intermediate-valence behavior in U2Rh2Sb

Intermediate-valence behavior is sometimes observed in lanthanide-based materials containing Ce, Yb, Sm or Eu. However, the number of actinide-based systems that exhibit this type of behavior is rather limited. In this work, we present the discovery and characterization of a uranium compound U2Rh2Sb, which turns out to be a candidate for the intermediate-valencebehavior. The material shows a characteristic feature in the magnetic susceptibility around T = 50 K, which can be described within the interconfiguration-fluctuation model of intermediate valence systems. We find the energy difference between the 5f3(U3+) and 5f2(U4+) states to be $\delta$Eex/kB $\approx$ 400 K and the corresponding valence fluctuation temperature to be Tvf $\approx$ 140 K. The value of the electronic specific heat coefficient $\gamma$ = 50 mJ mol-1 U K-2 signals a modest electron effective mass enhancement. The electrical resistivity indicates metallic behavior, albeit with a small residual resistivity ratio. Measurements of thermoelectric properties indicate a change of sign in the Seebeck coefficient around T = 100 K, with a minimum achieved at T = 50 K, which coincides with the broad peak observed in magnetic susceptibility. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical analysis, based on the first-principles calculations, including lattice dynamics.

Experimental nuclear quadrupole resonance and computational study of the structurally refined topological semimetal TaSb$_2$

The local electric field gradients and magnetic dynamics of TaSb$_2$ have been studied using $^{121}$Sb, $^{123}$Sb, and $^{181}$Ta nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) with density functional theory (DFT) calculations using XRD-determined crystal structures. By measuring all structurally expected thirteen NQR lines, the nuclear quadrupole coupling constant ($\nu_Q$) and asymmetric parameter ($\eta$) for Ta, Sb(1), and Sb(2) sites were obtained. These values are all in good agreement with the presented DFT calculations. Principal axes of the electric field gradients was determined for a single-crystal sample by measuring the angular dependencies of NMR frequency under a weak magnetic field. The unusual temperature dependence of $\eta$(T) of Sb(2) hints at the suppressed thermal expansion along the $a$-axis. Spin lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1T$) measurements reveal an activated-type behavior and an upturn below 30 K. Neither the low temperature upturn nor the high temperature activation type behaviors are reproduced by the calculated $1/T_1T$ based on the calculated density of states (DOS). On the other hand, the agreement between the calculated DOS and specific heat measurements indicates that the band renormalization is small. This fact indicates that TaSb$_2$ deviates from the simple semimetal scenario, and magnetic excitations are not captured by Fermi liquid theory.

Photovoltaic-ferroelectric materials for the realization of all-optical devices

Following how the electrical transistor revolutionized the field of electronics, the realization of an optical transistor in which the flow of light is controlled optically should open the long-sought era of optical computing and new data processing possibilities. However, such function requires photons to influence each other, an effect which is unnatural in free space. Here it is shown that a ferroelectric and photovoltaic crystal gated optically at the onset of its bandgap energy can act as a photonic transistor. The light-induced charge generation and distribution processes alter the internal electric field and therefore impact the optical transmission with a memory effect and pronounced nonlinearity. The latter results in an optical computing possibility, which does not need to operate coherently. These findings advance efficient room temperature optical transistors, memristors, modulators and all-optical logic circuits.

The planar triangular $S=3/2$ magnet AgCrSe$_2$: magnetic frustration, short range correlations, and field tuned anisotropic cycloidal magnetic order

Our studies evidence an anisotropic magnetic order below $T_N = 32$~K. Susceptibility data in small fields of about 1~T reveal an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order for $H \perp c$, whereas for $H \parallel c$ the data are reminiscent of a field-induced ferromagnetic (FM) structure. At low temperatures and for $H \perp c$, the field-dependent magnetization and AC susceptibility data evidence a metamagnetic transition at $H^+ = 5$~T, which is absent for $H \parallel c$. We assign this to a transition from a planar cycloidal spin structure at low fields to a planar fan-like arrangement above $H^+$. A fully FM polarized state is obtained above the saturation field of $H_{\perp S} = 23.7$~T at 2~K with a magnetization of $M_s = 2.8$~$μ_{\rm B}{\rm /Cr}$. For $H \parallel c$, $M(H)$ monotonously increases and saturates at the same $M_s$ value at $H_{\parallel S} = 25.1$~T at 4.2~K. Above $T_N $, the magnetic susceptibility and specific heat indicate signatures of two dimensional (2D) frustration related to the presence of planar ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange interactions. We found a pronounced nearly isotropic maximum in both properties at about $T^* = 45$~K, which is a clear fingerprint of short-range correlations and emergent spin fluctuations. Calculations based on a planar 2D Heisenberg model support our experimental findings and suggest a predominant FM exchange among nearest and AFM exchange among third-nearest neighbors. Only a minor contribution might be assigned to the antisymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction possible related to the non-centrosymmetric polar space group $R3m$. Due to these competing interactions, the magnetism in AgCrSe$_{2}$, in contrast to the oxygen based delafossites, can be tuned by relatively small, experimentally accessible, magnetic fields, allowing us to establish the complete anisotropic magnetic $H-T$ phase diagram in detail.

Revisiting the Possible 4f7 5d1 Ground State of Gd Impurities in SmB6 by Electron Spin Resonance

The search for topological states in strongly correlated electron systems has renewed the interest in the Kondo insulator SmB6. One of the most intriguing previous results was an anomalous electron spin resonance spectrum in Gd-doped SmB6. This spectrum was attributed to Gd2+ ions because it could be very well decribed by a model considering a change in the valence from Gd3+ to Gd2+, a dynamic Jahn-Teller effect and a 4f7 5d1 ground state in the Hamiltonian. In our work, we have revisited this scenario using electron spin resonance and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy measurements. Our results suggest that the resonance is produced by Gd2+ ions; however the resonance stems from an extrinsic oxide impurity phase that lies on the surface of the crystal.

Metamagnetic texture in a polar antiferromagnet

The notion of a simple ordered state implies homogeneity. If the order is established by a broken symmetry, elementary Landau theory of phase transitions shows that only one symmetry mode describes this state. Precisely at points of phase coexistence domain states formed of large regions of different phases can be stabilized by long range interactions. In uniaxial antiferromagnets the so-called metamagnetism is an example of such a behavior, when an antiferromagnetic and field-induced spin-polarized paramagnetic/ferromagnetic state co-exist at a jump-like transition in the magnetic phase diagram. Here, combining experiment with theoretical analysis, we show that a different type of mixed state between antiferromagnetism and ferromagnetism can be created in certain acentric materials. In the small-angle neutron scattering experiments we observe a field-driven spin-state in the layered antiferromagnet Ca3Ru2O7, which is modulated on a scale between 8 and 20 nm and has both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic parts. We call this state a metamagnetic texture and explain its appearance by the chiral twisting effects of the asymmetric Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) exchange. The observation can be understood as an extraordinary coexistence, in one thermodynamic state, of spin orders belonging to different symmetries. Experimentally, the complex nature of this metamagnetic state is demonstrated by measurements of anomalies in electronic transport which reflect the spin-polarization in the metamagnetic texture, determination of the magnetic orbital moments, which supports the existence of strong spin-orbit effects, a pre-requisite for the mechanism of twisted magnetic states in this material.

Evidence for Localized Moment Picture in Mn-based Heusler Compounds

X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) were used to probe the oxidation state and element specific magnetic moments of Mn in Heusler compounds with different crystallographic structure. The results were compared with theoretical calculations, and it was found that in full Heusler alloys, Mn is metallic (oxidation state near 0) on both sublattices. The magnetic moment is large and localized when octahedrally coordinated by the main group element, consistent with previous theoretical work, and reduced when the main group coordination is tetrahedral. By contrast, in the half Heusler compounds the magnetic moment of the Mn atoms is large and the oxidation state is +1 or +2. The magnetic and electronic properties of Mn in full and half Heusler compounds are strongly dependent on the structure and sublattice, a fact that can be exploited to design new materials.

Heavy fermion and Kondo lattice behavior in the itinerant ferromagnet CeCrGe3

Physical properties of polycrystalline CeCrGe$_{3}$ and LaCrGe$_{3}$ have been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy, magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, isothermal magnetization M(H), electrical resistivity $ρ(T)$, specific heat C($T$) and thermoelectric power S($T$) measurements. These compounds are found to crystallize in the hexagonal perovskite structure (space group \textit{P6$_{3}$/mmc}), as previously reported. The $ρ(T)$, $χ(T)$ and C($T$) data confirm the bulk ferromagnetic ordering of itinerant Cr moments in LaCrGe$_{3}$ and CeCrGe$_{3}$ with $T_{C}$ = 90 K and 70 K respectively. In addition a weak anomaly is also observed near 3 K in the C($T$) data of CeCrGe$_{3}$. The T dependences of $ρ$ and finite values of Sommerfeld coefficient $γ$ obtained from the specific heat measurements confirm that both the compounds are of metallic character. Further, the $T$ dependence of $ρ$ of CeCrGe$_{3}$ reflects a Kondo lattice behavior. An enhanced $γ$ of 130 mJ/mol\,K$^{2}$ together with the Kondo lattice behavior inferred from the $ρ(T)$ establish CeCrGe$_{3}$ as a moderate heavy fermion compound with a quasi-particle mass renormalization factor of $\sim$ 45.

Large resistivity change and phase transition in LiMnAs

Antiferromagnetic semiconductors are new alternative materials for spintronic applications and spin valves. In this work, we report a detailed investigation of two antiferromagnetic semiconductors AMnAs (A = Li, LaO), which are isostructural to the well-known LiFeAs and LaOFeAs superconductors. Here we present a comparison between the structural, magnetic, and electronic properties of LiMnAs, LaOMnAs and related materials. Interestingly, both LiMnAs and LaOMnAs show a variation in resistivity with more than five orders of magnitude, making them particularly suitable for use in future electronic devices. From neutron and X-ray diffraction measurements on LiMnAs we have observed a magnetic phase transition corresponding to the Neel temperature of 373.8 K, and a structural transition from the tetragonal to the cubic phase at 768 K. These experimental results are supported by density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Magnetic properties and electronic structures of intermediate valence systems CeRhSi2 and Ce2Rh3Si5

The crystal structures and the physical (magnetic, electrical transport and thermodynamic) properties of the ternary compounds CeRhSi2 and Ce2Rh3Si5 (orthorhombic CeNiSi2- and U2Co3Si5-type structures, respectively) were studied in wide ranges of temperature and magnetic field strength. The results revealed that both materials are valence fluctuating systems, in line with previous literature reports. Direct evidence for valence fluctuations was obtained by means of Ce LIII-edge x-ray absorption spectroscopy and Ce 3d core-level x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The experimental data were confronted with the results of ab initio calculations of the electronic band structures in both compounds.

Superconductivity induced by ruthenium substitution in an iron arsenide: investigation of SrFe2-xRuxAs2 (0 <= x <= 2)

The magnetism in SrFe2As2 can be suppressed by electron doping through a small substitution of Fe by Co or Ni, giving way to superconductivity. We demonstrate that a massive substitution of Fe by isovalent ruthenium similarly suppresses the magnetic ordering in SrFe2-xRuxAs2 and leads to bulk superconductivity for 0.6 <= x <= 0.8. Magnetization, electrical resistivity, and specific heat data show Tc up to approx 20K. Detailed structural investigations reveal a strong decrease of the lattice parameter ratio c/a with increasing x. DFT band structure calculations are in line with the observation that the magnetic order in SrFe2-xRuxAs2 is only destabilized for large x.

Interplay between 3d and 4f magnetism in CeCoPO

The ground state properties of CeCoPO, a homologue of the new high temperature superconductors RFePnO1-xFx, were studied by means of susceptibility, specific heat, and resistivity measurements on polycrystals. The observation of a well defined Curie-Weiss behavior above 230K with mu_eff=2.9mu_B and a ferromagnetic ordering below T_C=75K is similar to what was observed in LaCoPO and points to magnetism of the Co-3d electrons. However, the Ce-ions are on the border to magnetism with a Kondo scale of T_K~40K and show an enhanced Sommerfeld-coefficient of γ~200mJ/molK^2.

Structural investigations on $ε$-FeGe at high pressure and low temperature

The structural parameters of $ε$-FeGe have been determined at ambient conditions using single crystal refinement. Powder diffraction have been carried out to determine structural properties and compressibility for pressures up to 30 GPa and temperatures as low as 82 K. The discontinuous change in the pressure dependence of the shortest Fe-Ge interatomic distance might be interpreted as a symmetry-conserving transition and seems to be related to a magnetic phase boundary line.

High spin polarization in the ferromagnetic filled skutterudites KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12

The spin polarization of ferromagnetic alkali-metal iron antimonides KFe4Sb12 and NaFe4Sb12 is studied by point-contact Andreev reflection using superconducting Nb and Pb tips. From these measurements an intrinsic transport spin polarization Pt of 67% and 60% for the K and Na compound, respectively, is inferred which establishes these materials as a new class of highly spin polarized ferromagnets. The results are in accord with band structure calculations within the local spin density approximation (LSDA) that predict nearly 100% spin polarization in the density of states. We discuss the impact of calculated Fermi velocities and spin fluctuations on Pt.
