Opportunities in Flavour Physics at the HL-LHC and HE-LHC

Motivated by the success of the flavour physics programme carried out over the last decade at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), we characterize in detail the physics potential of its High-Luminosity and High-Energy upgrades in this domain of physics. We document the extraordinary breadth of the HL/HE-LHC programme enabled by a putative Upgrade II of the dedicated flavour physics experiment LHCb and the evolution of the established flavour physics role of the ATLAS and CMS general purpose experiments. We connect the dedicated flavour physics programme to studies of the top quark, Higgs boson, and direct high-$p_T$ searches for new particles and force carriers. We discuss the complementarity of their discovery potential for physics beyond the Standard Model, affirming the necessity to fully exploit the LHC's flavour physics potential throughout its upgrade eras.

Measurements of the top quark charge asymmetry at the LHC

The measurements of the top quark charge asymmetry performed by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at the LHC are presented. The focus is on the single lepton and dilepton decay channels of the tt system. Both inclusive and differential top quark charge asymmetry measurements are shown.

Quark contact interactions at the LHC

Quark contact interactions are an important signal of new physics. We introduce a model in which the presence of a symmetry protects these new interactions from giving large corrections in flavor changing processes at low energies. This minimal model provides the basic set of operators which must be considered to contribute to the high-energy processes. To discuss their experimental signature in jet pairs produced in proton-proton colllisions, we simplify the number of possible operators down to two. We show (for a representative integrated luminosity of 200 pb^-1 at \surd s = 7 TeV) how the presence of two operators significantly modifies the bound on the characteristic energy scale of the contact interactions which is obtained by keeping a single operator.

Telling the spin of the "Higgs boson" at the LHC

We assume that the Higgs boson or a possible resonance---playing its role in strongly interacting models of electroweak symmetry breaking---has been discovered at the LHC and propose a search strategy to determine its spin based on two simple asymmetries in the ZZ, W+W- and t t-bar decays channels. We consider some benchmark values for its mass (in the interval from 182 GeV/c^2 to 1 TeV/c^2) and discuss the relative advantages of the different decay processes. A full analysis, including the background, is given. For a center-of-mass energy of 14 TeV, we find that the lowest integrated luminosity required to discriminate between the different spins is, depending on the process and the resonance mass, between 40 fb^{-1} and 250 fb^{-1}.

Perspectives for the detection and measurement of Supersymmetry in the focus point region of mSUGRA models with the ATLAS detector at LHC

This paper discusses the ATLAS potential to study Supersymmetry for the "Focus-Point" region of the parameter space of mSUGRA models. The potential to discovery a deviation from Standard Model expectations with the first few ${fb}^{-1}$ of LHC data was studied using the parametrized simulation of the ATLAS detector. Several signatures were considered, involving hard jets, large missing energy, and either $b$-tagged jets, opposite-sign isolated electron or muon pairs, or top quarks reconstructed exploiting their fully hadronic decays. With only 1 ${fb}^{-1}$ of data each of these signatures may allow to observe an excess of events over Standard Model expectation with a statistical significance exceeding 5 standard deviations. An analytical expression was derived for the shape of the distribution of the dilepton invariant mass arising from the three-body leptonic decay of the neutralinos under the hypothesis of heavy scalars, which is appropriate for the focus-point scenario. The resulting function was used to fit the distribution of the dilepton invariant mass obtained with simulated LHC data, and to extract the value of two kinematic endpoints measuring the $\tilde χ^0_2 - \tilde χ^0_1$ and the $\tilde χ^0_3 - \tilde χ^0_1$ mass differences. This information was used to constrain the MSSM parameter space compatible with the data.

Les Houches "Physics at TeV Colliders 2005'' Beyond the Standard Model working group: summary report

The work contained herein constitutes a report of the "Beyond the Standard Model'' working group for the Workshop "Physics at TeV Colliders", Les Houches, France, 2-20 May, 2005. We present reviews of current topics as well as original research carried out for the workshop. Supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric models are studied, as well as computational tools designed in order to facilitate their phenomenology.
