Interaction between vortices in models with two order parameters

The interaction energy and force between widely separated strings is analyzed in a field theory having applications to superconducting cosmic strings, the SO(5) model of high-temperature superconductivity, and solitons in nonlinear optics. The field theory has two order parameters, one of which is broken in the vacuum (giving rise to strings), the other of which is unbroken in the vacuum but which could nonetheless be broken in the core of the string. If this does occur, there is an effect on the energetics of widely separated strings. This effect is important if the length scale of this second order parameter is longer than that of the other fields in the problem.

High Energy Fluxes from a Non-Scaling Cosmic String Network

Topological defects, particularly cosmic strings, can provide a mechanism to produce particles with energies of the order 10^21 eV and higher. Here, we report on order of magnitude calculations of fluxes from a cosmic string network which evolves according to a new scenario according to which the main channel for energy loss is the particle production rather than gravitational radiation. We compare the predicted fluxes for protons (anti-protons) and neutrinos (anti-neutrinos) with observations of extremely high energy cosmic rays.

Astrophysical Constraints on Primordial Black Hole Formation from Collapsing Cosmic Strings

Primordial Black Holes (PBH) may have formed from the collapse of cosmic string loops. The spectral shape of the PBH mass spectrum can be determined by the scaling argument for string networks. Limits on the spectral amplitude derived from extragalactic gamma-ray and galactic gamma-ray and cosmic ray flux observations as well as constraints from the possible formation of stable black holes remnants are reanalyzed. The new constraints are remarkably close to those derived from the normalization of the cosmic string model to the cosmic microwave background anisotropies.

Big-Bang Cosmology with Photon Creation

The temperature evolution law is determined for an expanding FRW type Universe with a mixture of matter and radiation where "adiabatic" creation of photons has taken place. Taking into account this photon creation we discuss the physical conditions for having a hot big bang Universe. We also compare our results to the ones obtained from the standard FRW model.

Limits on Black Hole Formation from Cosmic String Loops

In theories with cosmic strings, a small fraction of string loops may collapse to form black holes. In this Letter, various constraints on such models involving black holes are considered. Hawking radiation from black holes, gamma and cosmic ray flux limits and constraints from the possible formation of stable black hole remnants are reanalyzed. The constraints which emerge from these considerations are remarkably close to those derived from the normalization of the cosmic string model to the cosmic microwave background anisotropies.

Origin of Magnetic Fields in the Universe Due to Nonminimal Gravitational-Electromagnetic Coupling

Basically the only existing theories for the creation of a magnetic field B in the Universe are the creation of a seed field of order 10^{-20} G in spiral galaxy which is subsequently supposedly amplified up to the observed 10^{-6} - 10^{-5} G by a dynamo process or a seed intergalactic field of magnitude 10^{-12} - 10^{-10} G which is amplified by collapse and differential rotation. No satisfactory dynamo theory, however, exists today. We show that a 10^{-6} - 10^{-5} G magnetic field in spiral galaxies is directly obtained from a nonminimal gravitational-electromagnetic coupling, without the need of significant dynamo amplification.
