Improved Factorization for Threshold Resummation in Heavy Quark to Heavy Quark Decays

We consider the resummation of soft-gluon effects in heavy quark to heavy quark decays, namely the processes Q1 -> Q2 + (non QCD partons), where Q1 and Q2 are two different heavy quarks. We construct a new factorization scheme for threshold resummed spectra, which allows us to consistently evaluate the distribution of the final hadron invariant mass mX in all the kinematic regions, i.e. when mX is smaller, of the same order, or larger than the mass of the final quark Q2. A dependence of the Improved Coefficient Function on the threshold variable is introduced, which can however be relegated to a small interval of this variable by means of the so-called Partition of Unity. We explicitly apply our improved scheme to the b -> X_s + gamma decay at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy.

Winter (or delta-shell) Model at Small and Intermediate Volumes

We consider Winter (or delta-shell) model at finite volume, describing a small resonating cavity weakly coupled to a large one, for small and intermediate volumes (lengths). By defining N as the ratio of the length of the large cavity over the small one, we study the symmetric case N=1, in which the two cavities actually have the same length, as well as the cases N=2,3,4. By increasing N in the above range, the transition from a simple quantum oscillating system to a system having a resonance spectrum is investigated. We find that each resonant state is represented, at finite volume, by a cluster of states, each one resonating in a specific coupling region, centered around a state resonating at very small couplings. We derive high-energy expansions for the particle momenta in the above N cases, which (approximately) resum their perturbative series to all orders in the coupling among the cavities. These new expansions converge rather quickly with the order, provide, surprisingly, a uniform approximation in the coupling and also work, again surprisingly, at low energies. We construct a first resummation scheme having a clear physical picture, which is based on a function-series expansion, as well as a second scheme based on a recursion equation. The two schemes coincide at leading order, while they differ from next-to-leading order on. In particular, the recursive scheme realizes an approximate resummation of the function-series expansion generated within the first scheme.

Winter Model at Finite Volume

We study Winter or delta-shell model at finite volume (length), describing a small resonating cavity weakly-coupled to a large one. For generic values of the coupling, a resonance of the usual model corresponds, in the finite-volume case, to a compression of the spectral lines; for specific values of the coupling, a resonance corresponds instead to a degenerate or a quasi-degenerate doublet. A secular term of the form g^3 N occurs in the perturbative expansion of the momenta (or of the energies) of the particle at third order in g, where g is the coupling among the cavities and N is the ratio of the length of the large cavity over the length of the small one. These secular terms, which tend to spoil the convergence of the perturbative series in the large volume case, N >> 1, are resummed to all orders in g by means of standard multi-scale methods. The resulting improved perturbative expansions provide a rather complete analytic description of resonance dynamics at finite volume.

On the Unsolvability of Bosonic Quantum Fields

Two general unsolvability arguments for interacting bosonic quantum field theories are presented, based on Dyson-Schwinger equations on the lattice and cardinality considerations. The first argument is related to the fact that, on a lattice of size N, the system of lattice Dyson-Schwinger equations closes on a basis of "primitive correlators" which is finite, but grows exponentially with N. By properly defining the continuum limit, one finds for N -> infinity a countably-infinite basis of the primitive correlators. The second argument is that any conceivable exact analytic calculation of the primitive correlators involves, in the continuum limit, a linear system of coupled partial differential equations on an infinite number of unknown functions, namely the primitive correlators, evolving with respect to an infinite number of independent variables.

1/n Expansion of Resonant States

We present a general analytic expansion in powers of $1/n$ of the resonant states of quantum-mechanical systems, where $n=1,2,3,\cdots$ is the excitation number. Explicit formulas are obtained for some potential barrier models.

Geometry of Winter Model

By constructing the Riemann surface controlling the resonance structure of Winter model, we determine the limitations of perturbation theory. We then derive explicit non-perturbative results for various observables in the weak-coupling regime, in which the model has an infinite tower of long-lived resonant states. The problem of constructing proper initial wavefunctions coupled to single excitations of the model is also treated within perturbative and non-perturbative methods.

Renormalization in Winter Model

We show that metastable states in Winter model can be related to the eigenstates of a particle in a box by means of renormalization and mixing.

Nonperturbative Analysis of a Quantum Mechanical Model for Unstable Particles

We present a detailed non-perturbative analysis of the time-evolution of a well-known quantum-mechanical system - a particle between potential walls - describing the decay of unstable states. For sufficiently high barriers, corresponding to unstable particles with large lifetimes, we find an exponential decay for intermediate times, turning into an asymptotic power decay. We explicitly compute such power terms in time as a function of the coupling in the model. The same behavior is obtained with a repulsive as well as with an attractive potential, the latter case not being related to any tunnelling effect.
