Hydrodynamics, spin currents and torsion

We construct the canonical constitutive relations for a fluid description of a system with a spin current, valid in an arbitrary number of dimensions in the absence of parity breaking or time reversal breaking terms. Our study encompasses the hydrostatic partition function, the entropy current, Kubo formula, conformal invariance, and the effect of charge. At some stages of the computation we turn on a background torsion tensor which naturally couples to the spin current.

Torsional Newton Cartan gravity from non-relativistic strings

We study propagation of closed bosonic strings in torsional Newton-Cartan geometry based on a recently proposed Polyakov type action derived by dimensional reduction of the ordinary bosonic string along a null direction. We generalize the Polyakov action proposal to include matter, i.e. the 2-form and the 1-form that originates from the Kalb-Ramond field and the dilaton. We determine the conditions for Weyl invariance which we express as the beta-function equations on the worldsheet, in analogy with the usual case of strings propagating on a pseudo-Riemannian manifold. The critical dimension of the TNC space-time turns out to be 25. We find that Newton's law of gravitation follows from the requirement of quantum Weyl invariance in the absence of torsion. Presence of the 1-form requires torsion to be non vanishing. Torsion has interesting consequences, in particular it yields a mass term and an advection term in the generalized Newton's law. U(1) mass invariance of the theory is an important ingredient in deriving the beta functions.

A magnetically induced quantum phase transition in holography

We investigate quantum phase transitions in a 2+1 dimensional gauge theory at finite chemical potential $χ$ and magnetic field $B$. The gravity dual is based on 4D $\mathcal{N}=2$ Fayet-Iliopoulos gauged supergravity and the solutions we consider---that are constructed analytically---are extremal, dyonic, asymptotically $AdS_4$ black-branes with a nontrivial radial profile for the scalar field. We discover a line of second order fixed points at $B=B_c(χ)$ between the dyonic black brane and an extremal "thermal gas" solution with a singularity of good-type, according to the acceptability criteria of Gubser [1]. The dual field theory is the ABJM theory [2] deformed by a triple trace operator $Φ^3$ and placed at finite charge and magnetic field. This line of fixed points might be useful in studying the various strongly interacting quantum critical phenomena such as the ones proposed to underlie the cuprate superconductors. We also find curious similarities between the behaviour of the VeV $\langle Φ\rangle$ under B and that of the quark condensate in 2+1 dimensional NJL models.

Langevin diffusion of heavy quarks in non-conformal holographic backgrounds

The Langevin diffusion process of a relativistic heavy quark in a non-conformal holographic setup is discussed. The bulk geometry is a general, five-dimensional asymptotically AdS black hole. The heavy quark is described by a trailing string attached to a flavor brane, moving at constant velocity. From the equations describing linearized fluctuations of the string world-sheet, the correlation functions defining a generalized Langevin process are constructed via the AdS/CFT prescription. In the local limit, analytic expressions for the Langevin diffusion and friction coefficients are obtained in terms of the bulk string metric. Modified Einstein relations between these quantities are also derived. The spectral densities associated to the Langevin correlators are analyzed, and simple analytic expressions are obtained in the small and large frequency limits. Finally, a numerical analysis of the jet-quenching parameter, and a comparison to RHIC phenomenology are performed in the case of Improved Holographic QCD.

Improved Holographic Yang-Mills at Finite Temperature: Comparison with Data

The semi-phenomenological improved holographic model for QCD is confronted with data of the pure glue, large-Nc gauge theory. After fitting two phenomenological parameters in the potential, the model can reproduce in detail all thermodynamic functions at finite temperature. It also reproduces in detail all known spin-0 and spin-2 glueball observables at zero temperature and predicts the rest of the 0++ and 2++ towers. A similar two parameter fit in the CP-odd sector postdicts the correct second 0+- glueball mass, and predicts the rest of the 0+- tower.

Holography and Thermodynamics of 5D Dilaton-gravity

The asymptotically-logarithmically-AdS black-hole solutions of 5D dilaton gravity with a monotonic dilaton potential are analyzed in detail. Such theories are holographically very close to pure Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions. The existence and uniqueness of black-hole solutions is shown. It is also shown that a Hawking-Page transition exists at finite temperature if and only if the potential corresponds to a confining theory. The physics of the transition matches in detail with that of deconfinement of the Yang-Mills theory. The high-temperature phase asymptotes to a free gluon gas at high temperature matching the expected behavior from asymptotic freedom. The thermal gluon condensate is calculated and shown to be crucial for the existence of a non-trivial deconfining transition. The condensate of the topological charge is shown to vanish in the deconfined phase.

Deconfinement and Gluon Plasma Dynamics in Improved Holographic QCD

The finite temperature physics of the pure glue sector in the improved holographic QCD model of arXiv:0707.1324 and arXiv:0707.1349 is addressed. The thermodynamics of 5D dilaton gravity duals to confining gauge theories is analyzed. We show that they exhibit a first order Hawking-Page type phase transition. In the explicit background of arXiv:0707.1349, we find T_c = 235 MeV. The temperature dependence of various thermodynamic quantities such as the pressure, entropy and speed of sound is calculated. The results show a good agreement with the corresponding lattice data.

Exploring improved holographic theories for QCD: Part II

This paper is a continuation of ArXiv:0707.1324 where improved holographic theories for QCD were set up and explored. Here, the IR confining geometries are classified and analyzed. They all end in a "good" (repulsive) singularity in the IR. The glueball spectra are gaped and discrete, and they favorably compare to the lattice data. Quite generally, confinement and discrete spectra imply each other. Asymptotically linear glueball masses can also be achieved. Asymptotic mass ratios of various glueballs with different spin also turn out to be universal. Mesons dynamics is implemented via space filling D4-anti-D4 brane pairs. The associated tachyon dynamics is analyzed and chiral symmetry breaking is shown. The dynamics of the RR axion is analyzed, and the non-perturbative running of the QCD theta-angle is obtained. It is shown to always vanish in the IR.

Exploring improved holographic theories for QCD: Part I

Various holographic approaches to QCD in five dimensions are explored using input both from the putative non-critical string theory as well as QCD. It is argued that a gravity theory in five dimensions coupled to a dilaton and an axion may capture the important qualitative features of pure QCD. A part of the higher alpha' corrections are resummed into a dilaton potential. The potential is shown to be in one-to-one correspondence with the exact beta-function of QCD, and its knowledge determines the full structure of the vacuum solution. The geometry near the UV boundary is that of AdS_5 with logarithmic corrections reflecting the asymptotic freedom of QCD. We find that all relevant confining backgrounds have an IR singularity of the "good" kind that allows unambiguous spectrum computations. Near the singularity the 't Hooft coupling is driven to infinity. Asymptotically linear glueball masses can also be achieved. The classification of all confining asymptotics, the associated glueball spectra and meson dynamics are addressed in a companion paper, ArXiv:0707.1349

An open bosonic string with one end fixed

We study a bosonic string with one end free and the other confined to a D-brane. Only the odd oscillator modes are allowed, which leads to a Virasoro algebra of even Virasoro modes only. The theory is quantized in a gauge where world-sheet time and ordinary time are identified. There are no negative or null norm states, and no tachyon. The Regge slope is twice that of the open string; this can serve as a test of the usefulness of the the model as a semi-quantitative description of mesons with one light and one extremely heavy quark when such higher spin mesons are found. The Virasoro conditions select specific SO(D-1) irreps. The asymptotic density of states can be estimated by adapting the Hardy-Ramanujan analysis to a partition of odd integers; the estimate becomes exact as D goes to infinity.

Realizations of pseudo bosonic theories with non-diagonal automorphisms

Pseudo conformal field theories are theories with the same fusion rules, but with different modular matrix as some conventional field theory. One of the authors defined these and conjectured that, for bosonic systems, they can all be realized by some actual RCFT, which is of free bosons. We complete the proof here by treating the non diagonal automorphism case. It is shown that for characteristics $p\neq2$ they are all equivalent to a diagonal case, fully classified in our previous publication. For $p=2^n$ we realize the non diagonal case, establishing this theorem.
