Elliptic flow at SPS and RHIC: from kinetic transport to hydrodynamics

Anisotropic transverse flow is studied in Pb+Pb and Au+Au collisions at SPS and RHIC energies. The centrality and transverse momentum dependence at midrapidity of the elliptic flow coefficient v_2 is calculated in the hydrodynamic and low density limits. Hydrodynamics is found to agree well with the RHIC data for semicentral collisions up to transverse momenta of 1-1.5 GeV/c, but it considerably overestimates the measured elliptic flow at SPS energies. The low density limit LDL is inconsistent with the measured magnitude of v_2 at RHIC energies and with the shape of its p_t-dependence at both RHIC and SPS energies. The success of the hydrodynamic model points to very rapid thermalization in Au+Au collisions at RHIC and provides a serious challenge for kinetic approaches based on classical scattering of on-shell particles.

Four-Point Spectral Functions and Ward Identities in Hot QED

We derive spectral representations for the different components of the 4-point function at finite temperature in the real time formalism in terms of five real spectral densities. We explicitly calculate all these functions in QED in the hard thermal loop approximation. The Ward identities obeyed by the 1-loop 3- and 4-point functions in real time and their spectral functions are derived. We compare our results with those derived previously in the imaginary-time formalism for retarded functions in hot QCD, and we discuss the generalization of our results to non-equilibrium situations.

Hydrodynamic simulation of elliptic flow

We use a hydrodynamic model to study the space-time evolution transverse to the beam direction in ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collisions with nonzero impact parameters. We focus on the influence of early pressure on the development of radial and elliptic flow. We show that at high energies elliptic flow is generated only during the initial stages of the expansion while radial flow continues to grow until freeze-out. Quantitative comparisons with SPS data from semiperipheral Pb+Pb collisions suggest the applicability of hydrodynamical concepts already $\approx$ 1 fm/c after impact.

Universal pion freeze-out phase-space density

Results on the pion phase-space density at freeze-out in sulphur-nucleus, Pb-Pb and pi-p collisions at the CERN SPS are presented. All heavy-ion reactions are consistent with the thermal Bose-Einstein distribution f=1/[exp(E/T)-1] at T ~ 120 MeV, modified for radial expansion. pi-p data are also consistent with f, but at T ~ 180 MeV and without radial flow.

Thermal analysis of hadron multiplicities from relativistic quantum molecular dynamics

Some questions arising in the application of the thermal model to hadron production in heavy ion collisions are studied. We do so by applying the thermal model of hadron production to particle yields calculated by the microscopic transport model RQMD(v2.3). We study the bias of incomplete information about the final hadronic state on the extraction of thermal parameters. It is found that the subset of particles measured typically in the experiments looks more thermal than the complete set of stable particles. The hadrons which show the largest deviations from thermal behaviour in RQMD(v2.3) are the multistrange baryons and antibaryons. We also looked at the influence of rapidity cuts on the extraction of thermal parameters and found that they lead to different thermal parameters and larger disagreement between the RQMD yields and the thermal model.

Coulomb Final State Interactions for Gaussian Wave Packets

Two-particle like-sign and unlike-sign correlations including Coulomb final state interactions are calculated for Gaussian wave packets emitted from a Gaussian source. We show that the width of the wave packets can be fully absorbed into the spatial and momentum space widths of an effective emission function for plane wave states, and that Coulomb final state interaction effects are sensitive only to the latter, but not to the wave packet width itself. Results from analytical and numerical calculations are compared with recently published work by other authors.

Bose-Einstein Correlations in a Space-Time Approach to e+ e- Annihilation into Hadrons

A new treatment of Bose-Einstein correlations is incorporated in a space-time parton-shower model for e+ e- annihilation into hadrons. Two alternative afterburners are discussed, and we use a simple calculable model to demonstrate that they reproduce successfully the size of the hadron emission region. One of the afterburners is used to calculate two-pion correlations in e+ e- -> Z^0 -> hadrons and e+ e- -> W+ W- -> hadrons. Results are shown with and without resonance decays, for correlations along and transverse to the thrust jet axis in these two classes of events.

Multi-boson effects and the normalization of the two-pion correlation function

The two-pion correlation function can be defined as a ratio of either the measured momentum distributions or the normalized momentum space probabilities. We show that the first alternative avoids certain ambiguities since then the normalization of the two-pion correlator contains important information on the multiplicity distribution of the event ensemble which is lost in the second alternative. We illustrate this explicitly for specific classes of event ensembles.

Three-Point Spectral Density in QED and the Ward Identity at Finite Temperature

We derive the spectral representations of QED 3-point functions and then explicitly calculate the 3-point spectral densities in hard thermal loop approximation within the real time formalism. The Ward identities obeyed by the retarded and advanced 2- and 3-point functions are discussed. We compare our results with those for hot QCD .

Evidence for a high entropy phase in nuclear collisions

We determine the entropy per baryon content of the central reaction region in terms of the charged particle multiplicity. We study the consistency of our findings with recent data on strange anti-baryon production at 200 GeV A in S -> A collisions (A=200) assuming formation of a central fireball. Hadron gas models which do not invoke strong medium modifications of hadron masses do not provide enough entropy and are inconsistent with the combined experimental results. In contrast the quark-gluon plasma hypothesis explains them naturally.

Thermal hadron production in pp and p{\bar p} collisions

It is shown that the hadron production in high energy pp and p{\bar p} collisions, calculated by assuming that particles originate in hadron gas fireballs at thermal and partial chemical equilibrium, agrees very well with the data. The temperature of the hadron gas fireballs, determined by fitting hadron abundances, does not seem to depend on the centre of mass energy, having a nearly constant value of about 170 MeV. This value is in agreement with that obtained in e^+e^- collisions and supports a universal hadronization mechanism in all kinds of reactions consisting in a parton-hadron transition at critical values of temperature and pressure.

Final state interactions in two-particle interferometry

We reconsider the influence of two-particle final state interactions (FSI) on two-particle Bose-Einstein interferometry. We concentrate in particular on the problem of particle emission at different times. Assuming chaoticity of the source, we derive a new general expression for the symmetrized two-particle cross section. We discuss the approximations needed to derive from the general result the Koonin-Pratt formula. Introducing a less stringent version of the so-called smoothness approximation we also derive a more accurate formula. It can be implemented into classical event generators and allows to calculate FSI corrected two-particle correlation functions via modified Bose-Einstein "weights".

Three-Point Spectral Functions in $ϕ^3_6$ Theory at Finite Temperature

We derive a set of relations among the thermal components of the 3-point function and its spectral representations at finite temperature in the real-time formalism. We then use these to explicitly calculate the 3-point spectral densities for $ϕ^3_6$ theory and relate the result to the case of hot QCD.

Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii Parametrisation of the Hanbury Brown-Twiss Correlator

The Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii (YKP) parametrisation of Hanbury Brown-Twiss (HBT) two-particle correlation functions opens new strategies for extracting the emission duration and testing the longitudinal expansion in heavy-ion collisions. Based on the recently derived model-independent expressions, we present a detailed parameter study of the YKP parameters for a finite, hydrodynamically expanding source model of heavy-ion collisions. For the class of models studied here, we show that the three YKP radius parameters have an interpretation as longitudinal extension, transverse extension and emission duration of the source in the YKP frame. This frame is specified by the fourth fit parameter, the Yano-Koonin velocity which describes to a good approximation the velocity of the fluid element with highest emissivity and allows to test for the longitudinal expansion of the source. Deviations from this interpretation of the YKP parameters are discussed quantitatively.

Space-time Characteristics of the Fireball from HBT Interferometry

We present the Yano-Koonin-Podgoretskii parametrisation of the correlation function. Compared to the conventionally used Cartesian parametrisation, this one provides more straightforward measurement of the duration of the emission process in the fireball and a clearer signal of the longitudinal expansion, which is expected in ulrarelativistic heavy ion collisions.
