Two-Higgs-Doublet Models with a Flavored $\mathbb{Z}_2$

Two Higgs-doublet models usually consider an ad-hoc $\mathbb{Z}_2$ discrete symmetry to avoid flavor changing neutral currents. We consider a new class of two Higgs-doublet models where $\mathbb{Z}_2$ is enlarged to the symmetry group ${\cal{F}}\rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2$, i.e. an inner semi-direct product of a discrete symmetry group ${\cal{F}}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$. In such a scenario the symmetry constrains the Yukawa interactions but goes unnoticed by the scalar sector. In the most minimal scenario, $\mathbb{Z}_3 \rtimes \mathbb{Z}_2 = D_3$, flavor changing neutral currents mediated by scalars are absent at tree and one-loop level, while at the same time predictions to quark and lepton mixing are obtained, namely a trivial CKM matrix and a PMNS matrix (upon introduction of three heavy right-handed neutrinos) containing maximal atmospheric mixing. Small extensions allow to fully reproduce mixing parameters, including cobimaximal mixing in the lepton sector (maximal atmospheric mixing and a maximal $CP$ phase).

Viable low-scale model with Universal and Inverse Seesaw Mechanisms

We formulate a viable low-scale seesaw model, where the masses for the standard model (SM) charged fermions lighter than the top quark emerge from a universal seesaw mechanism mediated by charged vectorlike fermions. The small light active neutrino masses are produced from an inverse seesaw mechanism mediated by right-handed Majorana neutrinos. Our model is based on the $A_{4} $ family symmetry, supplemented by cyclic symmetries, whose spontaneous breaking produces the observed pattern of SM fermion masses and mixings. The model can accommodate the muon and electron anomalous magnetic dipole moments and predicts strongly suppressed $μ\rightarrow eγ$ and $τ\rightarrow μγ$ decay rates, but allows a $τ\rightarrow eγ$ decay within the reach of the forthcoming experiments.

A bottom-up approach to the strong CP problem

The strong CP problem is one of many puzzles in the theoretical description of elementary particle physics that still lacks an explanation. While top-down solutions to that problem usually comprise new symmetries or fields or both, we want to present a rather bottom-up perspective. The main problem seems to be how to achieve small CP violation in the strong interactions despite large CP violation in weak interactions. Observation of CP violation is exclusively through the Higgs--Yukawa interactions. In this paper, we show that with minimal assumptions on the structure of mass (Yukawa) matrices they do not contribute to the strong CP problem and thus we can provide a pathway to a solution of the strong CP problem within the structures of the Standard Model and no extension at the electroweak scale is needed. However, to address the flavor puzzle, models based on minimal SU(3) flavor groups leading to the proposed flavor matrices are favored. Though we refrain from an explicit a UV completion of the Standard Model, we provide a simple requirement those models should have to intrinsically not show a strong CP problem.

Fermion masses as mixing parameters in the SM

Flavor transitions via the charged current interactions are parametrized by a three dimensional and unitary transformation. This so called mixing matrix requires of four mixing parameters. Here we show that under the phenomenological observation of hierarchical fermion masses, $m_3 \gg m_2 \gg m_1$, a mixing parametrization can be built with its mixing parameters being the corresponding four independent mass ratios of each fermion sector, i.e., $m_u/m_c$, $m_c/m_t$, $m_d/m_s$, and $m_s/m_b$ and $m_e/m_μ$, $m_μ/m_τ$, $m_{ν1}/m_{ν2}$, and $m_{ν 2}/m_{ν3}$, for the quark and lepton sector, respectively.

The flavor-blind principle: A symmetrical approach to the Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relation

We perform a systematic study of the generic Gatto-Sartori-Tonin relation, $\tan^2θ_{ij}= m_i/m_j$. This study of fermion mixing phenomena leads us to the necessary conditions that are needed in order to obtain it without any approximation. We begin by considering two Dirac fermion families. By means of the hierarchy in the masses, it is found that a sufficient and necessary condition is to have a normal matrix with $m_{11}=0$. This matrix can be decomposed into two different linearly independent contributions. The origin for such two independent contributions can be naturally explained by what we shall call the flavor-blind principle. This principle states that Yukawa couplings shall be either flavor-blind or decomposed into several sets obeying distinct permutation symmetries. In general, it is shown that the symmetry properties of the introduced set of Yukawa matrices follow for $n$ fermion families the unique sequential breaking $S_{nL}\otimes S_{nR} \rightarrow S_{(n-1)L}\otimes S_{(n-1)R} \rightarrow \cdots \rightarrow S_{2L}\otimes S_{2R} \rightarrow S_{2A}$. The particular case of three fermion families explains why the four mass ratios parametrization that we recently proposed can be used even in the case of no hierarchical masses.
