Target-skyrmions and skyrmion clusters in nanowires of chiral magnets

In bulk non-centrosymmetric magnets the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange stabilizes tubular skyrmions with a reversed magnetization in their centers. While the double-twist is favorable in the center of a skyrmion, it gives rise to an excess of the energy density at the outskirt. Therefore, magnetic anisotropies are required to make skyrmions more favorable than the conical spiral state in bulk materials. Using Monte Carlo simulations, we show that in magnetic nanowires unusual skyrmions with a doubly twisted core and a number of concentric helicoidal undulations (target-skyrmions) are thermodynamically stable even in absence of single-ion anisotropies. Such skyrmions are free of magnetic charges and, since the angle describing the direction of magnetization at the surface depends on the radius of the nanowire and an applied magnetic field, they carry a non-integer skyrmion charge s > 1. This state competes with clusters of spatially separated s=1 skyrmions. For very small radii, the target-skyrmion transforms into a skyrmion with s < 1, that resembles the vortex-like state stabilized by surface-induced anisotropies.

Extended elliptic skyrmion gratings in epitaxial MnSi thin films

A detailed investigation of the magnetization processes in epitaxial MnSi thin film reveals the existence of elliptically distorted skyrmion strings that lie in the plane of the film. We provide proof that the uniaxial anisotropy stabilizes this state over extended regions of the magnetic phase diagram. Theoretical analysis of an observed cascade of first-order phase transitions is based on rig- orous numerical calculations of competing chiral modulations, which shows the existence of helicoids, elliptic skyrmions, and cone phases.

First-order structural transition in the magnetically ordered phase of Fe1.13Te

Specific heat, resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, linear thermal expansion (LTE), and high-resolution synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction investigations of single crystals Fe1+yTe (0.06 < y < 0.15) reveal a splitting of a single, first-order transition for y < 0.11 into two transitions for y > 0.12. Most strikingly, all measurements on identical samples Fe1.13Te consistently indicate that, upon cooling, the magnetic transition at T_N precedes the first-order structural transition at a lower temperature T_s. The structural transition in turn coincides with a change in the character of the magnetic structure. The LTE measurements along the crystallographic c-axis displays a small distortion close to T_N due to a lattice striction as a consequence of magnetic ordering, and a much larger change at T_s. The lattice symmetry changes, however, only below T_s as indicated by powder X-ray diffraction. This behavior is in stark contrast to the sequence in which the phase transitions occur in Fe pnictides.

Magnetoelectric effects in single crystals of the cubic ferrimagnetic helimagnet Cu2OSeO3

We present magnetodielectric measurements in single crystals of the cubic spin-1/2 compound Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. A magnetic field-induced electric polarization ($\vec{P}$) and a finite magnetocapacitance (MC) is observed at the onset of the magnetically ordered state ($T_c = 59$ K). Both $\vec{P}$ and MC are explored in considerable detail as a function of temperature (T), applied field $\vec{H}_a$, and relative field orientations with respect to the crystallographic axes. The magnetodielectric data show a number of anomalies which signal magnetic phase transitions, and allow to map out the phase diagram of the system in the $H_a$-T plane. Below the 3up-1down collinear ferrimagnetic phase, we find two additional magnetic phases. We demonstrate that these are related to the field-driven evolution of a long-period helical phase, which is stabilized by the chiral Dzyalozinskii-Moriya term $D \vec{M} \cdot(\bs{\nabla}\times\vec{M})$ that is present in this non-centrosymmetric compound. We also present a phenomenological Landau-Ginzburg theory for the ME$_H$ effect, which is in excellent agreement with experimental data, and shows three novel features: (i) the polarization $\vec{P}$ has a uniform as well as a long-wavelength spatial component that is given by the pitch of the magnetic helices, (ii) the uniform component of $\vec{P}$ points along the vector $(H^yH^z, H^zH^x, H^xH^y)$, and (iii) its strength is proportional to $η_\parallel^2-η_\perp^2/2$, where $η_\parallel$ is the longitudinal and $η_\perp$ is the transverse (and spiraling) component of the magnetic ordering. Hence, the field dependence of P provides a clear signature of the evolution of a conical helix under a magnetic field. A similar phenomenological theory is discussed for the MC.

Chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic films: new objects for magnetic storage technologies?

Axisymmetric magnetic lines of nanometer sizes (chiral vortices or skyrmions) have been predicted to exist in a large group of noncentrosymmetric crystals more than two decades ago. Recently these magnetic textures have been directly observed in nanolayers of cubic helimagnets and monolayers of magnetic metals. We develop a micromagnetic theory of chiral skyrmions in thin magnetic layers for magnetic materials with intrinsic and induced chirality. Such particle-like and stable micromagnetic objects can exist in broad ranges of applied magnetic fields including zero field. Chiral skyrmions can be used as a new type of highly mobile nanoscale data carriers.

Stabilization of Skyrmion textures by uniaxial distortions in noncentrosymmetric cubic helimagnets

In cubic noncentrosymmetric ferromagnets uniaxial distortions suppress the helical states and stabilize Skyrmion lattices in a broad range of thermodynamical parameters. Using a phenomenological theory for modulated and localized states in chiral magnets, the equilibrium parameters of the Skyrmion and helical states are derived as functions of the applied magnetic field and induced uniaxial anisotropy. These results show that due to a combined effect of induced uniaxial anisotropy and an applied magnetic field Skyrmion lattices can be formed as thermodynamically stable states in large intervals of magnetic field and temperatures in cubic helimagnets, e.g., in intermetallic compounds MnSi, FeGe, (Fe,Co)Si. We argue that this mechanism is responsible for the formation of Skyrmion states recently observed in thin layers of Fe_{0.5}Co_{0.5}Si [X.Z.Yu et al., Nature \textbf{465}(2010) 901].

Skyrmionic textures in chiral magnets

In non-centrosymmetric magnets the chiral Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya exchange stabilizes Skyrmion-strings as excitations which may condense into multiply modulated phases. Such extended Skyrmionic textures are determined by the stability of the localized "solitonic" Skyrmion cores and their geometrical incompatibility which frustrates regular space-filling. We present numerically exact solutions for Skyrmion lattices and formulate basic properties of the Skyrmionic states.

Theory of vortex states in magnetic nanodisks with induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions

Vortex states in magnetic nanodisks are essentially affected by surface/interface induced Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions. Within a micromagnetic approach we calculate the equilibrium sizes and shape of the vortices as functions of magnetic field, the material and geometrical parameters of nanodisks. It was found that the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya coupling can considerably increase sizes of vortices with "right" chirality and suppress vortices with opposite chirality. This allows to form a bistable system of homochiral vortices as a basic element for storage applications.
