e+ e- pairs from pi- A reactions

We calculate dilepton production for the reactions $π^-$C and $π^-$Pb at 1.3 GeV within a semi-classical BUU transport model and compare our results to a previously published calculation. We show that a modified treatment of the $ρ$-meson production and propagation gives substantially different results. We, furthermore, discuss uncertainties related to the electromagnetic decay of the $ρ$-meson and the elementary $π^- N \to e^+ e^- X$ channels.

Coherent Photoproduction of Dileptons on Light Nuclei - a New Means to Learn about Vector Mesons

In the last years much work has been done to learn about the properties of the $ρ$-meson in nuclear matter. In a calculation of the in-medium spectralfunction of the $ρ$ we find that it is strongly modified by baryonic resonances, especially the $D_{13}(1520)$, through its coupling to resonance-hole states. In order to test the predictions of a model for the in-medium properties of the $ρ$-meson so far mostly heavy-ion collision have been used. We argue that the coherent photoproduction of $ρ$-mesons yields additional information about the nature of the medium modification. It can be shown that the production amplitude is sensitive on the momentum dependence of the $ρ$-selfenergy. This can be used to distinguish experimentally between various models for the $ρ$ in matter.

Nucleon Resonances in Kaon Photoproduction

Nucleon resonances are investigated through the electromagnetic production of K-mesons. We study the kaon photoproduction process at tree-level and compare to a recently developed unitary K-matrix approach. Employing hadronic form factors along with the proper gauge prescription yields suppression of the Born terms and leads a resonance dominated process for both K-Lambda and K-Sigma photoproduction. Using new SAPHIR data we find the K+-Lambda photoproduction to be dominated by the S11(1650) at threshold, with additional contributions from the P11(1710) and P13(1720) states. The K-Sigma channel couples to a cluster of Delta resonances around W = 1900 MeV. We briefly discuss some tantalizing evidence for a missing D13 resonance around 1900 MeV with a strong branching ratio into KLambda channel.

Analysis of flow effects in relativistic heavy-ion collisions within the CBUU approach

We study flow phenomena in relativistic heavy-ion collisions, both in transverse and radial direction, in comparison to experimental data. The collective dynamics of the nucleus-nucleus collision is described within a transport model of the coupled channel BUU type (CBUU). This recently developed version includes all nucleonic resonances up to 1.95 GeV in mass and mean-field potentials both of the Skyrme and momentum dependent MDYI type. We find that heavy resonances play an important role in the description of transverse flow above 1 AGeV incident energy. For radial flow we analyse reaction times and equilibration and extract the parameters $T$ and $β$ for temperature and collective flow velocity within different prescriptions. Furthermore, we apply a coalescence model for fragment production and check the mass dependence of the flow signals.

Isospin equilibration in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

We study the mixing and the kinetic equilibration of projectile and target nucleons in relativistic heavy-ion collisions in the energy regime between 150~AMeV and 2~AGeV in a coupled-channel BUU (CBUU) approach. We find that equilibrium in the projectile-target degrees of freedom is in general not reached even for large systems at low energy where elastic nucleon-nucleon collisions dominate. Inelastic nucleon excitations are more favorable for equilibration and their relative abundance increases both with energy and mass. Experimentally, the projectile/target admixture can be determined by measuring the degree of isospin equilibration in isospin asymmetric nuclear collisions. For one of the most promising systems currently under investigation, ${}^{96}_{44}{\rm Ru}+{}^{96}_{40}{\rm Zr}$, we investigate the influence of the equation of state and the inelastic in-medium cross section.

$e^+e^-$ pairs from $π^-$A reactions

We present a dynamical study of $e^+e^-$ production in $π^-$A reactions at 1.3 and 1.7 GeV on the basis of the Coupled-Channel-BUU approach. The contributions from vector mesons ($ρ,ω$) are calculated taking into account the collisional broadening effect and are compared to background sources in the dilepton spectrum from the Dalitz decays of $ω$ and $η$ mesons produced in the reaction. Two possible scenarios for the medium modifications of the vector mesons are investigated, i.e. the 'dropping mass' scheme for the $ρ$ and $ω$ and a momentum dependent $ρ$-meson spectral function that includes the polarization of the $ρ$-meson due to resonant $ρ-N$ scattering.

Hadrons in the Nuclear Medium -- Introduction and Overwiew

In this talk I first discuss predictions based on QCD sum rules and on hadronic models for the properties of vector mesons in the nuclear medium. I then describe possible experimental signatures and show detailed predictions for dilepton invariant mass spectra with a special emphasis on nuclear reactions involving elementary incoming beams and nuclear targets. I will in particular illustrate that the sensitivity of pion and photon induced reactions to in-medium effects is comparable to that of heavy-ion reactions.

Photon- and meson-induced reactions on the nucleon

In an unitary effective Lagrangian model we develop a unified description of both meson scattering and photon-induced reactions on the nucleon. Adding the photon to an already existing model for meson-nucleon scattering yields both Compton and meson photoproduction amplitudes. In a simultaneous fit to all available data involving the final states $γN$, $πN$, $ππN$, $ηN$ and $K Λ$ the parameters of the nucleon resonances are extracted.

Coherent Photoproduction of Eta-Mesons on Spin-Zero Nuclei in a Relativistic, Non-local Model

The coherent photoproduction of $η$-mesons on spin-zero nuclei is studied in a relativistic, non-local model, which we have previously applied to the coherent photoproduction of pions. We find that different off-shell extrapolations of the elementary production operator lead to large effects in the cross section. We also show that the almost complete suppression of the N(1535) seen in earlier studies on this reaction is a result of the local or factorization approximation used in these works. Non-local effects can lead to a considerable contribution from this resonance. The relative size of the N(1535) contribution depends on the structure of the nucleus under consideration. We give an estimate for the contribution of the N(1520) resonance and discuss the effect of an $η$-nucleus optical potential

Hadronization of a Quark-Gluon Plasma in the Chromodielectric Model

We have carried out simulations of the hadronization of a hot, ideal but effectively massive quark-gluon gas into color neutral clusters in the framework of the semi-classical SU(3) chromodielectric model. We have studied the possible quark-gluon compositions of clusters as well as the final mass distribution and spectra, aiming to obtain an insight into relations between hadronic spectral properties and the confinement mechanism in this model.

Coherent Photoproduction of Pions on Spin-Zero Nuclei in a relativistic, non-local Model

A relativistic and non-local model for the coherent photoproduction of pions on spin-zero nuclei is presented. The production operator is derived from an effective Lagrangian model that contains all the degrees of freedom known to contribute to the elementary process. Using the framework of DWIA, the matrix elements of this operator are evaluated using relativistic bound state wave functions. Final state interactions are accounted for via a pion-nucleus optical potential. The effects of in-medium modifications of the production operator are discussed. We give results for $^{12}C$ and $^{40}Ca$, and compare our calculations to the data of the A2 collaboration at MAMI.

Charmonium Suppression with cc~ Dissociation by Strings

We study the production of cc~ pairs in nuclear reactions at SPS energies within the covariant transport approach HSD. The production of cc~ is treated perturbatively employing experimental cross sections while the interactions of cc~ pairs with baryons are included by conventional cascade-type two-body collisions. Adopting 6 mb for the cc~-baryon cross sections the data on J/Ψsuppression in p+A reactions are reproduced in line with calculations based on the Glauber model. Additionally the dissociation of the cc~ pairs by strings is included in a purely geometrical way. We find good agreement with experimental data from the NA38 and NA50 collaboration with an estimate for the string radius of ~0.2-0.3 fm.

A unitary model for meson-nucleon scattering

In an effective Lagrangian model employing the K-matrix approximation we extract nucleon resonance parameters. To this end we analyze simultaneously all available data for reactions involving the final states $πN$, $ππN$, $ηN$ and $K Λ$ in the energy range $m_N + m_π \le \sqrt s \le 1.9$ GeV. The background contributions are generated consistently from the relevant Feynman amplitudes, thus significantly reducing the number of free parameters.

Baryon flow at SIS energies

We calculate the baryon flow $< P_x/A(y) >$ in the energy range from .25 to $\le 2.5 AGeV$ in a relativistic transport model for $Ni+Ni$ and $Au+Au$ collisions employing various models for the baryon self energies. We find that to describe the flow data of the FOPI Collaboration the strength of the vector potential has to be reduced at high relative momentum or at high density such that the Schrödinger- equivalent potential at normal nuclear density decreases above 1 GeV relative kinetic energy and approaches zero above 2 GeV.

Meson $m_T$-scaling in heavy-ion collisions at SIS energies

We perform systematical studies on transverse-mass spectra of $π^0$, $η$, $ω$, $ϕ$, $K^+$ and $K^-$ mesons for C + C, Ni + Ni, Au + Au collisions at SIS energies within the HSD transport approach. We find that the $m_T$-spectra sensitively reflect the in-medium properties of the mesons. The 'bare mass' scenario leads to a general scaling behaviour for the meson $m_T$-spectra when including a mass shift due to the associate strangeness production threshold for kaons and antikaons whereas a 'dropping' mass scheme violates this $m_T$-scaling. The relative slope parameters, however, provide valuable information about the average meson potentials in the nuclear medium.

The Spectral Function of the Rho Meson in Nuclear Matter

We calculate the modification of a rho meson in nuclear matter through its coupling to resonance-hole states. Starting from a recently proposed model, we include all four star resonances up to 1.9 GeV. In contrast to previous works, we include not only resonances that couple to the rho in a relative p-wave, but also those that couple to an s-wave state. In addition, we solve the equation for the rho spectral function self-consistently. We find that s-wave resonances affect the in medium spectral function of the rho strongly. In the transverse channel the rho meson is, especially at non zero momentum, completely washed out and can in the presence of nuclear matter no longer be viewed as a resonant excitation of the vacuum. Instead, our model shows a continuum of possible excitations with the quantum numbers of a transversely polarized rho. In the longitudinal channel, however, the rho retains its resonant character in our calculation. As a consequence of the self-consistent treatment we also find a strong enhancement of the widths of the included nucleon resonances in medium.

Photoabsorption in nuclei

We calculate the total photoabsorption cross section and cross sections for inclusive pion and eta photoproduction in nuclei in the energy range from 300 MeV to 1 GeV within the framework of a semi-classical BUU transport model. Besides medium modifications like Fermi motion and Pauli blocking we focus on the collision broadening of the involved resonances. The resonance contributions to the elementary cross section are fixed by fits to partial wave amplitudes of pion photoproduction. The cross sections for $NR \to NN$, needed for the calculation of collision broadening, are obtained by detailed balance from a fit to $NN \to NNπ$ cross sections. We show that a reasonable collision broadening is not able to explain the experimentally observed disappearance of the $D_{13}$(1520)-resonance in the photoabsorption cross section on nuclei.

RPA-Approach to the Excitations of the Nucleon, Part II: Phenomenology

The tensor-RPA approach developed previously in part I is applied to the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. As a first step we investigate the structure of Dirac-Hartree-Fock solutions for a rotationally and isospin invariant ground-state density. Whereas vacuum properties can be reproduced, no solitonic configuration for a system with unit baryon number is found. We then solve the tensor-RPA equation employing simple models of the nucleon ground state. In general the ph interaction effects a decrease of the excited states to lower energies. Due to an enhanced level density at low energies the obtained spectra cannot be matched with the experimental data when a standard MIT-bag configuration is used. However, when the size of the nucleon quark core is reduced to approximately 0.3 fm a fair description of the baryon spectrum in the positive-parity channel is achieved. For this purpose the residual interaction turns out to be crucial and leads to a significant improvement compared with the mean-field spectra.
