Infrastructure for Detector Research and Development towards the International Linear Collider

The EUDET-project was launched to create an infrastructure for developing and testing new and advanced detector technologies to be used at a future linear collider. The aim was to make possible experimentation and analysis of data for institutes, which otherwise could not be realized due to lack of resources. The infrastructure comprised an analysis and software network, and instrumentation infrastructures for tracking detectors as well as for calorimetry.

A TPC with Triple-GEM Gas Amplification and TimePix Readout

We present measurements with a GEM based TPC prototypes and the TimePix CMOS ASIC as charge collecting anode. Tests with a small prototype were performed in a 5 GeV electron beam at DESY. Different GEM orientations and geometries were tested. It is shown that the point resolution for short drift distances is better than 20 micrometer. The achieved time resolution is better than 10 ns at 100 MHz clock frequency. Furthermore, experimental studies with an enlarged pixel size are addressed. To study the performance for longer drift distances a chamber with 26 cm drift length is operated in Bonn. Using also GEM and TimePix for the readout, data with cosmic muons and a Sr90 source are recorded. The spatial resolution and cluster properties are studied in dependence on the drift distance.

Resolution Studies of GEM/Timepix Detector with 5 GeV electrons

This contribution investigates a prototype of a TPC readout with a highly pixelated CMOS ASIC, which is an option for charged particles tracking of the ILC. A triple GEM stack was joined with a TimePix and MediPix2 chip (pixel size of 55$\times$55 $μm^2$) and its readout properties were investigated with 5 GeV electrons. The spatial resolution of the cluster center reconstruction was determined as a function of drift distance using different cluster alhoritms and compared with Monte Carlo predictions.

Readout of GEM Detectors Using the Medipix2 CMOS Pixel Chip

We have operated a Medipix2 CMOS readout chip, with amplifying, shaping and charge discriminating front-end electronics integrated on the pixel-level, as a highly segmented direct charge collecting anode in a three-stage gas electron multiplier (Triple-GEM) to detect the ionization from $^{55}$Fe X-rays and electrons from $^{106}$Ru. The device allows to perform moderate energy spectroscopy measurements (20 % FWHM at 5.9 keV $X$-rays) using only digital readout and two discriminator thresholds. Being a truly 2D-detector, it allows to observe individual clusters of minimum ionizing charged particles in $Ar/CO_2$ (70:30) and $He/CO_2$ (70:30) mixtures and to achieve excellent spatial resolution for position reconstruction of primary clusters down to $\sim 50 μm$, based on the binary centroid determination method.
