New high-sensitivity searches for neutrons converting into antineutrons and/or sterile neutrons at the European Spallation Source

The violation of Baryon Number, $\mathcal{B}$, is an essential ingredient for the preferential creation of matter over antimatter needed to account for the observed baryon asymmetry in the universe. However, such a process has yet to be experimentally observed. The HIBEAM/NNBAR %experiment program is a proposed two-stage experiment at the European Spallation Source (ESS) to search for baryon number violation. The program will include high-sensitivity searches for processes that violate baryon number by one or two units: free neutron-antineutron oscillation ($n\rightarrow \bar{n}$) via mixing, neutron-antineutron oscillation via regeneration from a sterile neutron state ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow \bar{n}$), and neutron disappearance ($n\rightarrow n'$); the effective $Δ\mathcal{B}=0$ process of neutron regeneration ($n\rightarrow [n',\bar{n}'] \rightarrow n$) is also possible. The program can be used to discover and characterise mixing in the neutron, antineutron, and sterile neutron sectors. The experiment addresses topical open questions such as the origins of baryogenesis, the nature of dark matter, and is sensitive to scales of new physics substantially in excess of those available at colliders. A goal of the program is to open a discovery window to neutron conversion probabilities (sensitivities) by up to three orders of magnitude compared with previous searches. The opportunity to make such a leap in sensitivity tests should not be squandered. The experiment pulls together a diverse international team of physicists from the particle (collider and low energy) and nuclear physics communities, while also including specialists in neutronics and magnetics.

Baryon Number Violation

This report, prepared for the Community Planning Study - Snowmass 2013 - summarizes the theoretical motivations and the experimental efforts to search for baryon number violation, focussing on nucleon decay and neutron-antineutron oscillations. Present and future nucleon decay search experiments using large underground detectors, as well as planned neutron-antineutron oscillation search experiments with free neutron beams are highlighted.

Testing Violations of Lorentz Invariance with Cosmic Rays

Cosmic rays are the highest energy particles available for our study and as such serve as excellent probes of the effects of Lorentz Invariance Violations, which are expected to increase with energy. This general paradigm is investigated in this paper by studying the effects of such violations within the Coleman-Glashow model in which each particle species may have its own maximum attainable velocity, even exceeding that of light \textit{in vacuo}. The particular focus here is that the muon neutrino may have the maximum speed exceeding that of light. We show that such an assumption leads to the elongation of the decay lifetime of the pion that increases with energy over and above the time dilation effects. We provide a transparent analytical derivation of the spectral intensities of muon neutrinos and muons generated in the Earth's atmosphere by cosmic rays. In this derivation we not only account for elongation of the pion lifetime, but also for the loss of energy by the neutrinos by radiation of the electron-positron pairs through the Cohen-Glashow process, during their propagation. We then compare the theoretical spectra with observations of neutrinos and muons from large instruments like IceCube and BUST to set a limit of $\sim10^{-13}$ on the fractional excess speed of neutrinos over that of light. We also show that the ratio of the spectral intensities of downward and upward moving neutrinos at various angles constitute a diagnostic exclusively for the Cohen-Glashow process, which may be searched for in the IceCube data set. We conclude the paper with several comments, including those related to improvements of these tests when definite signals of GZK neutrinos will be observed.

Superluminal Neutrinos at OPERA Confront Pion Decay Kinematics

Violation of Lorentz invariance (VLI) has been suggested as an explanation of the superluminal velocities of muon neutrinos reported by OPERA. In this note we show that the amount of VLI required to explain this result poses severe difficulties with the kinematics of the pion decay, extending its lifetime and reducing the momentum carried away by the neutrinos. We show that the OPERA experiment limits $α= (v_ν- c)/c < 4 \times 10^{-6}$. We then take recourse to cosmic ray data on the spectrum of muons and neutrinos generated in the earth's atmosphere to provide a stronger bound on VLI: $(v-c)/c < 10^{-12}$.

Neutrino Phenomenology, Dark Energy and Leptogenesis from pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone Bosons

We consider a model of dynamical neutrino masses via the see-saw mechanism. Nambu-Goldstone bosons (majorons) arise associated with the formation of the heavy right-handed majorana masses. These bosons then acquire naturally soft masses (become pNGB's) at loop level via the Higgs-Yukawa mass terms. These models, like the original neutrino pNGB quintessence schemes of the 1980's that proceed through the Dirac masses, are natural, have cosmological implications through mass varying neutrinos, long range forces, and provide a soft potential for dark energy. We further argue that these models can explain leptogenesis naturally through the decays of the right-handed neutrinos.

Thermal leptogenesis in extended supersymmetric seesaw

We consider an extended supersymmetric SO(10) seesaw model with only doublet Higgs scalars, in which neutrino masses are suppressed by the scale of D-parity violation. Leptogenesis can occur at the TeV scale through the decay of a singlet Sigma, thereby avoiding the gravitino crisis. Washout of the asymmetry can be effectively suppressed by the absence of direct couplings of Sigma to leptons.

Electrophilicity as a Possible Descriptor of the Kinetic Behaviour

An understanding of the precise nature of a chemical reactivity descriptor is of utmost interest to quantum chemists. In the present investigation an attempt has been made to analyze whether the electrophilicity index is a reliable descriptor of the kinetic behaviour. Relative experimental rates of Friedel- Crafts benzylation, acetylation and benzoylation reactions correlate well with the corresponding calculated electrophilicity values. Chlorination of various substituted ethylenes and nitration of toluene and chlorobenzene are studied as representative examples of electrophilic addition and substitution reactions respectively. The correlation is not very good to assess that which, however, improves drastically by removing a few data points to show that the electrophilicity is a kinetic quantity with inherent thermodynamic information. The correlation between the experimental and the calculated activation energies is studied for some Markovnikov and anti-Markovnikov addition reactions and is turned out to be reasonably well. Reaction electrophilicity, local electrophilicity and activation hardness are used together to provide a transparent picture of reaction rates as well as the orientation of aromatic electrophilic substitution reactions. Ambiguity in the definition of the electrophilicity is highlighted.

Large neutrino mixing angles for type-I see-saw mechanism in SO(10) GUT

We consider the neutrino mixing angles in an SO(10) GUT with the usual Higgs structure in which neutrino masses are explained by the type-I see-saw mechanism. The Dirac-neutrino Yukawa matrix then has a structure similar to that of the $u$-quark. We determine the light neutrino mass matrix through type-I see-saw mechanism using the experimentally consistent $u$-quark Yukawa matrix. We find that large neutrino mixing-angles emerge naturally in this model.

Consequences of neutrinoless double beta decay and WMAP

Observation of the neutrinoless double beta decay ($\0n$) has established that there is lepton number violation in nature and the neutrino masses are Majorana in nature. It also gives the absolute mass of the neutrinos and discriminates between different models of neutrino masses. The allowed amount of lepton number violation puts severe constraints on some possible new physics beyond the standard model. The recent results from WMAP are consistent with the consequences of the neutrinoless double beta decay. They improve some of these constraints very marginally, which we shall summarise here. We mention the new physics which are not affected by WMAP and could make both these limits from the neutrinoless double beta decay and WMAP consistent.

Neutrinoless double beta decay with scalar bilinears

One possible probe to physics beyond the standard model is to look for scalar bilinears, which couple to two fermions of the standard model. We point out that the scalar bilinears allow new diagrams contributing to the neutrinoless double beta decay. The upper bound on the neutrinoless double beta decay lifetime would then give new constraints on the ratio of the masses of these scalars to their couplings to the fermions.

Baryon and Lepton Number Violation with Scalar Bilinears

We consider all possible scalar bilinears, which couple to two fermions of the standard model. The various baryon and lepton number violating couplings allowed by these exotic scalars are studied. We then discuss which ones are constrained by limits on proton decay (to a lepton and a meson as well as to three leptons), neutron-antineutron oscillations, and neutrinoless double beta decay.

Neutrino Radar

We point out that with improving our present knowledge of experimental neutrino physics it will be possible to locate nuclear powered vehicles like submarines, aircraft carriers and UFOs and detect nuclear testing. Since neutrinos cannot be shielded, it will not be possible to escape these detection. In these detectors it will also be possible to perform neutrino oscillation experiments during any nuclear testing.

Majorana neutrinos with split fermions in extra dimensions

We propose new solutions to the neutrino mass problem in theories with large extra dimensions in a thick wall scenario. It has recently been argued that our 3-brane could be a thick wall at the boundary of the bulk. The gauge bosons and the Higgs scalars have an almost flat profile on this wall, while fermions could have localized profile with left-handed and right-handed components displaced with respect to each other. We point out that with split fermions it is possible to generate Majorana neutrino masses contributing to the neutrinoless double beta decay. The almost degenerate neutrinos can also come out naturally in this case. Unlike other models of neutrino masses in extra dimensions there are no bulk fields in this scenario.

Neutrino mixing schemes and neutrinoless double beta decay

We study the possible structure of the neutrino mass matrix taking into consideration the solar and atmospheric neutrinos and the neutrinoless double beta decay. We emphasize on mass matrices with vanishing elements. There are only a very few possibilities remaining at present. We concentrate on three generation scenarios and find that with three parameters there are few possibilities with and without any vanishing elements. For completeness we also present a five parameter four neutrino (with one sterile neutrino) mass matrix which can explain all these experiments and the LSND result.

Implications of observed neutrinoless double beta decay

Recently a positive indication of the neutrinoless double beta decay has been announced. We study the implications of this result taking into consideration earlier results on atmospheric neutrinos and solar neutrinos. We also include in our discussions the recent results from SNO and K2K. We point out that on the confidence level given for the double beta signal, the neutrino mass matrices are now highly constrained. All models predicting Dirac masses are ruled out and leptogenesis becomes a natural choice. Only the degenerate and the inverted hierarchical solutions are allowed for the three generation Majorana neutrinos. In both these cases we find that the radiative corrections destabilize the solutions and the LOW, VO and Just So solutions of the solar neutrinos are ruled out. For the four generation case only the inverted hierarchical scenario is allowed.

Confronting Dilaton-exchange gravity with experiments

We study the experimental constraints on theories, where the equivalence principle is violated by dilaton-exchange contributions to the usual graviton-exchange gravity. We point out that in this case it is not possible to have any CPT violation and hence there is no constraint from the CPT violating measurements in the $K-$system. The most stringent bound is obtained from the $K_L - K_S$ mass difference. In contrast, neither neutrino oscillation experiments nor neutrinoless double beta decay imply significant constraints.
