Conductance oscillations in strongly correlated fractional quantum Hall line junctions

We present a detailed theory of transport through line junctions formed by counterpropagating single-branch fractional-quantum-Hall edge channels having different filling factors. Intriguing transport properties are exhibited when strong Coulomb interactions between electrons from the two edges are present. Such strongly correlated line junctions can be classified according to the value of an effective line-junction filling factor n that is the inverse of an even integer. Interactions turn out to affect transport most importantly for n=1/2 and n=1/4. A particularly interesting case is n=1/4 corresponding to, e.g., a junction of edge channels having filling factor 1 and 1/5, respectively. We predict its differential tunneling conductance to oscillate as a function of voltage. This behavior directly reflects the existence of novel Majorana-fermion quasiparticle excitations in this type of line junction. Experimental accessibility of such systems in current cleaved-edge overgrown samples enables direct testing of our theoretical predictions.

Strongly Correlated Fractional Quantum Hall Line Junctions

We have studied a clean finite-length line junction between interacting counterpropagating single-branch fractional-quantum-Hall edge channels. Exact solutions for low-lying excitations and transport properties are obtained when the two edges belong to quantum Hall systems with different filling factors and interact via the long-range Coulomb interaction. Charging effects due to the coupling to external edge-channel leads are fully taken into account. Conductances and power laws in the current-voltage characteristics of tunneling are strongly affected by inter-edge correlations.

Fractional-quantum-Hall edge electrons and Fermi statistics

We address the quantum statistics of electrons created in the low-energy edge-state Hilbert space sector of incompressible fractional quantum Hall states, considering the possibility that they may not satisfy Fermi statistics. We argue that this property is not a priori obvious, and present numerical evidence based on finite-size exact-diagonalization calculations that it does not hold in general. We discuss different possible forms for the expression for the electron creation operator in terms of edge boson fields and show that none are consistent with our numerical results on finite-size filling-factor-2/5 states with short-range electron-electron interactions. Finally, we discuss the current body of experimental results on tunneling into quantum Hall edges in the context of this result.

Spin Accumulation in Quantum Wires with Strong Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling

We present analytical and numerical results for the effect of Rashba spin-orbit coupling on band structure, transport, and interaction effects in quantum wires when the spin precession length is comparable to the wire width. In contrast to the weak-coupling case, no common spin-quantization axis can be defined for eigenstates within a single-electron band. The situation with only the lowest spin-split subbands occupied is particularly interesting because electrons close to Fermi points of the same chirality can have approximately parallel spins. We discuss consequences for spin-dependent transport and effective Tomonaga-Luttinger descriptions of interactions in the quantum wire.

Probing Spin-Charge Separation in Tunnel-Coupled Parallel Quantum Wires

Interactions in one-dimensional (1D) electron systems are expected to cause a dynamical separation of electronic spin and charge degrees of freedom. A promising system for experimental observation of this non-Fermi-liquid effect consists of two quantum wires coupled via tunneling through an extended uniform barrier. Here we consider the minimal model of an interacting 1D electron system exhibiting spin-charge separation and calculate the differential tunneling conductance as well as the density-density response function. Both quantities exhibit distinct strong features arising from spin-charge separation. Our analysis of these features within the minimal model neglects interactions between electrons of opposite chirality and applies therefore directly to chiral 1D electron systems realized, e.g., at the edge of integer quantum-Hall systems. Physical insight gained from our results is useful for interpreting current experiment in quantum wires as our main conclusions still apply with nonchiral interactions present. In particular, we discuss the effect of charging due to applied voltages, and the possibility to observe spin-charge separation in a time-resolved experiment.

Filtering spin with tunnel-coupled electron wave guides

We show how momentum-resolved tunneling between parallel electron wave guides can be used to observe and exploit lifting of spin degeneracy due to Rashba spin-orbit coupling. A device is proposed that achieves spin filtering without using ferromagnets or the Zeeman effect.

Momentum-Resolved Tunneling into Fractional Quantum Hall Edges

Tunneling from a two-dimensional contact into quantum-Hall edges is considered theoretically for a case where the barrier is extended, uniform, and parallel to the edge. In contrast to previously realized tunneling geometries, details of the microscopic edge structure are exhibited directly in the voltage and magnetic-field dependence of the differential tunneling conductance. In particular, it is possible to measure the dispersion of the edge-magnetoplasmon mode, and the existence of additional, sometimes counterpropagating, edge-excitation branches could be detected.

Mesoscopic effects in tunneling between parallel quantum wires

We consider a phase-coherent system of two parallel quantum wires that are coupled via a tunneling barrier of finite length. The usual perturbative treatment of tunneling fails in this case, even in the diffusive limit, once the length L of the coupling region exceeds a characteristic length scale L_t set by tunneling. Exact solution of the scattering problem posed by the extended tunneling barrier allows us to compute tunneling conductances as a function of applied voltage and magnetic field. We take into account charging effects in the quantum wires due to applied voltages and find that these are important for 1D-to-1D tunneling transport.

Quantum Breakdown of the Quantized Hall Insulator

We present an analytical scaling theory for localization in a two-dimensional hierarchical network model that is designed to represent phase-coherent electron transport in the quantum-Hall regime. Scaling expressions for both the longitudinal and Hall resistivities are derived. In agreement with recent numerical studies, we find that the Hall resistivity is quantized in the metallic phase but diverges in the insulating phase. This suggests that the characteristics of a quantized Hall insulator can occur only in the presence of a strong dephasing mechanism.

Exactly Soluble Model for Umklapp Scattering at Quantum-Hall Edges

We consider the low-energy, long-wave-length excitations of a reconstructed quantum-Hall edge where three branches of chiral one-dimensional edge excitations exist. We find that, in addition to forward scattering between the three edge-excitation branches, Coulomb interaction gives rise to a novel Umklapp-type scattering process that cannot be accounted for within a generalized Tomonaga-Luttinger model. We solve the theory including Umklapp processes exactly in the long-wave-length limit and calculate electronic correlation functions.

Andreev Reflection in Strong Magnetic Fields

We have studied the interplay of Andreev reflection and cyclotron motion of quasiparticles at a superconductor-normal-metal interface with a strong magnetic field applied parallel to the interface. Bound states are formed due to the confinement introduced both by the external magnetic field and the superconducting gap. These bound states are a coherent superposition of electron and hole edge excitations similar to those realized in finite quantum-Hall samples. We find the energy spectrum for these Andreev edge states and calculate transport properties.

Umklapp scattering at reconstructed quantum-Hall edges

We study the low-lying excitations of a quantum-Hall sample that has undergone edge reconstruction such that there exist three branches of chiral edge excitations. Among the interaction processes that involve electrons close to the three Fermi points is a new type of Umklapp-scattering process which has not been discussed before. Using bosonization and a refermionization technique, we obtain exact results for electronic correlation functions and discuss the effect Umklapp scattering has on the Luttinger-liquid properties of quantum-Hall edges.

Fractional-quantum-Hall edges at filling factor 1-1/m

We consider the edge of a two-dimensional electron system that is in the quantum-Hall-effect regime at filling factor 1-1/m with m being an odd integer, where microscopic theory explaining the occurrence of the quantum Hall effect in the bulk predicts the existence of two counterpropagating edge-excitation modes. These two modes are the classical edge-magnetoplasmon mode and a slow-moving neutral mode. Assuming the electrons to be confined by a coplanar neutralizing background of positive charges, and taking careful account of long-range Coulomb interactions, we determine microscopically the velocity of the neutral mode and the edge width. Our results are intended to guide experimental efforts aimed at verifying the existence of the neutral mode, which would provide a powerful confirmation of the current microscopic understanding of quantum-Hall physics at the simplest hierarchical filling Factors 1-1/m.

Periphery deformations and tunneling at correlated quantum-Hall edges

We argue that, at any filling factor, correlated quantum-Hall systems possess a set of chiral boson excitations which are generated by electronically rigid deformations of the system's periphery. We submit that tunneling electrons can be accommodated, at low energies, in these systems only by periphery-deformation excitations. This property would explain the recent observation of a tunneling density of states at the edge which does not exhibit a strong dependence on the occurrence or absence of the quantum Hall effect and has a power-law dependence on energy with exponent (inverse filling factor)-1.

Observability of counterpropagating modes at fractional-quantum-Hall edges

When the bulk filling factor is equal to 1 - 1/m with m odd, at least one counterpropagating chiral collective mode occurs simultaneously with magnetoplasmons at the edge of fractional-quantum-Hall samples. Initial experimental searches for an additional mode were unsuccessful. In this paper, we address conditions under which its observation should be expected in experiments where the electronic system is excited and probed by capacitive coupling. We derive realistic expressions for the velocity of the slow counterpropagating mode, starting from a microscopic calculation which is simplified by a Landau-Silin-like separation between long-range Hartree and residual interactions. The microscopic calculation determines the stiffness of the edge to long-wavelength neutral excitations, which fixes the slow-mode velocity, and the effective width of the edge region, which influences the magnetoplasmon dispersion.

Edge-Magnetoplasmon Wave-Packet Revivals in the Quantum Hall Effect

The quantum Hall effect is necessarily accompanied by low-energy excitations localized at the edge of a two-dimensional electron system. For the case of electrons interacting via the long-range Coulomb interaction, these excitations are edge magnetoplasmons. We address the time evolution of localized edge-magnetoplasmon wave packets. On short times the wave packets move along the edge with classical E cross B drift. We show that on longer times the wave packets can have properties similar to those of the Rydberg wave packets that are produced in atoms using short-pulsed lasers. In particular, we show that edge-magnetoplasmon wave packets can exhibit periodic revivals in which a dispersed wave packet reassembles into a localized one. We propose the study of edge-magnetoplasmon wave packets as a tool to investigate dynamical properties of integer and fractional quantum-Hall edges. Various scenarios are discussed for preparing the initial wave packet and for detecting it at a later time. We comment on the importance of magnetoplasmon-phonon coupling and on quantum and thermal fluctuations.

Plasmon Modes and Correlation Functions in Quantum Wires and Hall Bars

We present microscopic derivations of the one-dimensional low-energy boson effective Hamiltonians of quantum wire and quantum Hall bar systems. The quantum Hall system is distinguished by its spatial separation of oppositely directed electrons. We discuss qualitative differences in the plasmon collective mode dispersions and the ground state correlation functions of the two systems which are consequences of this difference. The slowly-decaying quasi-solid correlations expected in a quantum wire are strongly suppressed in quantum Hall bar systems.

Electronic Spectral Functions for Quantum Hall Edge States

We have evaluated wavevector-dependent electronic spectral functions for integer and fractional quantum Hall edge states using a chiral Luttinger liquid model. The spectral functions have a finite width and a complicated line shape because of the long-range of the Coulomb interaction. We discuss the possibility of probing these line shapes in vertical tunneling experiments.
