An unquenched lattice QCD calculation of the mass of the bottom quark

We compute the b quark mass from dynamical lattice QCD with clover quarks. The calculation is done at a fixed lattice spacing with sea quark masses as low as half the strange quark mass. Our final result is m_b(m_b} = 4.25(2)(11) GeV, where the first error is statistical and the last error is the systematic uncertainty.

Hadronic decay of a scalar B meson from the lattice

We explore the transitions B$(0^+)$ to B $π$ and B$_s(0^+)$ to B K from lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ flavours of sea quark, using the static approximation for the heavy quark. We evaluate the effective coupling constants, predicting a B$(0^+)$ to B $π$ width of around 160 MeV. Our result for the coupling strength adds to the evidence that the B$_s(0^+)$ meson is not predominantly a molecular state (BK).

Excited B mesons from the lattice

We determine the energies of the excited states of a heavy-light meson $Q\bar{q}$, with a static heavy quark and light quark with mass approximately that of the strange quark from both quenched lattices and with dynamical fermions. We are able to explore the energies of orbital excitations up to L=3, the spin-orbit splitting up to L=2 and the first radial excitation. These $b \bar{s}$ mesons will be very narrow if their mass is less than 5775 MeV -- the $BK$ threshold. We investigate this in detail and present evidence that the scalar meson (L=1) will be very narrow and that as many as 6 $b \bar{s}$ excited states will have energies close to the $BK$ threshold and should also be relatively narrow.

The mass of the charm quark from unquenched lattice QCD at fixed lattice spacing

We determine the mass of the charm quark ($m_c$) from lattice QCD with two flavors of dynamical quarks with a mass around the strange quark. We compare this to a determination in quenched QCD which has the same lattice spacing (0.1 fm). We investigate different formulations of the quark mass, based on the Vector Ward Identity, PCAC relation and the FNAL heavy quark formalism. Based on these preliminary results we find no effects due to sea quarks with a mass around strange.

Hadronic decays from the lattice

We discuss strategies to determine hadronic decay couplings from lattice studies. As an application, we explore the decay of a vector meson to two pseudoscalar mesons with $N_f=2$ flavours of sea quark. Although we are working with quark masses that do not allow a physical decay, we show how the transition rate can be evaluated from the amplitude for $ρ\to ππ$ and from the annihilation component of $ππ\to ππ$. We explore the decay amplitude for two different pion momenta and find consistent results. The coupling strength we find is in agreement with experiment. We also find evidence for a shift in the $ρ$ mass caused by mixing with two pion states.

The eta and eta' mesons in QCD

We study the flavour singlet pseudoscalar mesons from first principles using lattice QCD. We explore the quark content of the $η$ and $η'$ mesons and we discuss their decay constants.

Improved Wilson QCD simulations at light quark masses

We present preliminary results from UKQCD simulations at light quark masses using two flavours of non-pertubatively improved Wilson fermions. We report on the performance of the standard HMC algorithm at these quark masses where m_pi/m_rho < 0.5 in comparison with simulations using improved staggered quarks.

Lattice Calculation of Baryon Masses using the Clover Fermion Action

We present a calculation of the lowest-lying baryon masses in the quenched approximation to QCD. The calculations are performed using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action, and a splitting is found between the masses of the nucleon and its parity partner. An analysis of the mass of the first radial excitation of the nucleon finds a value considerably larger than that of the parity partner of the nucleon, and thus little evidence for the Roper resonance as a simple three-quark state

Excited nucleon spectrum using a non-perturbatively improved clover fermion action

We discuss the extraction of negative-parity baryon masses from lattice QCD calculations. The mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity $J = 1/2^{-}$ state is computed in quenched lattice QCD using an ${\cal O}(a)$-improved clover fermion action, and a splitting found with the nucleon mass. The calculation is performed on two lattice volumes, and three lattice spacings enabling a study of both finite-volume and finite-lattice-spacing uncertainties. A measurement of the first excited radial excitation of the nucleon finds a mass considerably larger than that of the negative-parity ground state, in accord with other lattice determinations but in disagreement with experiment. Results are also presented for the lightest negative-parity $I=3/2$ state.

The Charge and Matter radial distributions of Heavy-Light mesons calculated on a lattice with dynamical fermions

A knowledge of the radial distributions of quarks inside hadrons could lead to a better understanding of the QCD description of these hadrons and possibly suggest forms for phenomenological models. As a step in this direction, in an earlier work, the charge (vector) and matter (scalar) radial distributions of heavy-light mesons were measured in the quenched approximation on a 16^3x24 lattice with a lattice spacing of 'a' approx. 0.17 fm, and a hopping parameter corresponding to a light quark mass about that of the strange quark. Here several improvements are now made: 1) The configurations are generated using dynamical fermions with a approx 0.14 fm; 2) Many more gauge configurations areincluded; 3) The distributions at many off-axis, in addition to on-axis, points are measured; 4) The data analysis is much more complete. In particular, distributions involving excited states are extracted. The exponential decay of the charge and matter distributions can be described by mesons of mass 0.9 +- 0.1 and 1.5 +- 0.1 GeV respectively -- values that are consistent with those of vector and scalar $q\bar{q}$-states calculated directly with the same lattice parameters.

Negative-parity Baryon Masses using an O(a)-improved Fermion Action

We present a calculation of the mass of the lowest-lying negative-parity J=1/2- state in quenched QCD. Results are obtained using a non-perturbatively O(a)-improved clover fermion action, and a splitting is found between the mass of the nucleon and its parity partner. The calculation is performed on two lattice volumes and at three lattice spacings, enabling a study of both finite-volume and finite lattice-spacing uncertainties. A comparison is made with results obtained using the unimproved Wilson fermion action.

Semi-leptonic decays of heavy mesons and the Isgur-Wise function in quenched lattice QCD

The form factors for the semi-leptonic B->D and B->D* decays are evaluated in quenched lattice QCD at two different values of the coupling, beta=6.0 and 6.2. The action and the operators are fully O(a) non-perturbatively improved. The slope of the Isgur-Wise function is evaluated, and found to be rho^2=0.83^{+15+24}_{-11-1} (quoted errors are statistical and systematic respectively). Ratios of form factors are evaluated and compared to experimental determinations.

Standard Model Matrix Elements for Neutral B-Meson Mixing and Associated Decay Constants

We present results of quenched lattice calculations of the matrix elements relevant for B_d-\bar B_d and B_s-\bar B_s mixing in the Standard Model. Results for the corresponding SU(3)-breaking ratios, which can be used to constrain or determine |V_{td}|, are also given. The calculations are performed at two values of the lattice spacing, corresponding to β= 6.0 and β= 6.2, with quarks described by a mean-field-improved Sheikholeslami-Wohlert action. As a by-product, we obtain the leptonic decay constants of B and D mesons. We also present matrix elements relevant for D^0-\bar D^0 mixing. Our results are summarized in the Introduction.

Hybrid meson decay from the lattice

We discuss the allowed decays of a hybrid meson in the heavy quark limit. We deduce that an important decay will be into a heavy quark non-hybrid state and a light quark meson, in other words, the de-excitation of an excited gluonic string by emission of a light quark-antiquark pair. We discuss the study of hadronic decays from the lattice in the heavy quark limit and apply this approach to explore the transitions from a spin-exotic hybrid to $χ_b η$ and $χ_b S$ where $S$ is a scalar meson. We obtain a signal for the transition emitting a scalar meson and we discuss the phenomenological implications.
