Space-and Time-like Electromagnetic Kaon Form Factors

A simultaneous investigation of the space- and time-like electromagnetic form factors of the charged kaon is presented within the framework of light-cone QCD, with perturbative $k_T$-factorization including Sudakov suppression. The effects of power suppressed sub-leading twists and the genuine ``soft'' QCD corrections turn out to be dominant at low- and moderate-energies/momentum transfers $Q^2$. Our predictions agree well with the available moderate-energy experimental data, including the recent results from the CLEO measurements and certain estimates based on the phenomenological analyses of $J/ψ$ decays.

Space- and time-like electromagnetic pion form factors in light-cone pQCD

We present a combined analysis of the space- and time-like electromagnetic pion form factors in light-cone perturbative QCD with transverse momentum dependence and Sudakov suppression. Including the non-perturbative ``soft' QCD and power suppressed twist-3 corrections to the standard twist-2 perturbative QCD result, the experimental pion data available at moderate energies/momentum transfers can be explained reasonably well. This may help towards resolving the bulk of the existing discrepancy between the space- and time-like experimental data.

Model analysis on thermal UV-cutoff effects on the critical boundary in hot QCD

We study the critical boundary on the quark-mass plane associated with the chiral phase transition in QCD at finite temperature. We point out that the critical boundaries obtained from the Lattice QCD simulation and the chiral effective model are significantly different; in the (Polyakov-loop coupled) Nambu--Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model we find that the critical mass is about one order of magnitude smaller than the value reported in the Lattice QCD case. It is known in the Lattice QCD study that the critical mass goes smaller in the continuum limit along the temporal direction. To investigate the temporal UV-cutoff effects quantitatively we consider the (P)NJL model with only finite $N_τ$ Matsubara frequencies taken in the summation. We confirm that the critical mass in such a UV-tamed NJL model becomes larger with decreasing $N_τ$, which demonstrates a correct tendency to explain the difference between the Lattice QCD and chiral model results.

U_A(1) Anomaly in Hot and Dense QCD and the Critical Surface

We discuss the chiral phase transition in hot and dense QCD with three light flavors. Inspired by the well known fact that the U_A(1) anomaly could induce first order phase transitions, we study the effect of the possible restoration of the U_A(1) symmetry at finite density. In particular, we explore the link between the U_A(1) restoration and the recent lattice QCD results of de Forcrand and Philipsen, in which the first order phase transition region near zero chemical potential (mu) shrinks in the quark mass and mu space when mu is increased. Starting from the Ginzburg-Landau theory for general discussions, we then use the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model for quantitative studies. With the partial U_A(1) restoration modeled by the density dependent 't Hooft interaction, we fit the shrinking of the critical surface found in de Forcrand and Philipsen's lattice calculation at low mu. At higher mu, the critical surface might shrink or expand, depending on the scenarios. This raises the possibility that despite the shrinking of the critical surface at lower mu, the QCD critical end point might still exist due to the expansion at higher mu. In this case, very high precision lattice data will be needed to detect the back-bending of the critical surface with the currently available analytic continuation or Taylor expansion approaches. Lattice computations could, however, test whether the U_A(1) restoration is responsible for the shrinking of the critical surface by computing eta' mass or the topological susceptibility at small mu.

Electromagnetic pion and kaon form factors in light-cone resummed perturbative QCD

We analyze the electromagnetic pion and kaon form factor by including radiative and higher-twist effects within the framework of resummed pQCD in the space-like region. We focus on the transition from the perturbative to non-perturbative behavior in the phenomenological intermediate energy regime. Using a modified k_T factorization scheme with transverse degrees of freedom, we evaluate the non-perturbative soft contributions as distinct from the hard contributions, ensuring no double counting via the Ward identity at Q^2=0. The soft contributions are obtained via local quark-hadron duality while the hard contributions rest on the well known collinear factorization theorem using model wave functions with modified Brodsky-Huang-Lepage type ansatz and distribution amplitudes derived from light-cone QCD sum rules. Our analysis shows that the perturbative hard part prevails for large Q^2 beyond 50-100 GeV^2, while for low and moderate momentum transfers below 10-16 GeV^2 the soft contributions dominate over the hard part. Thus, we demonstrate the importance of including the soft contributions for explaining the experimental form-factor data.

Kaon-nucleon scattering lengths from kaonic deuterium experiments

The extraction of the S-wave kaon-nucleon scattering lengths a0 and a1 from a combined analysis of existing kaonic hydrogen and synthetic deuterium data has been carried out within the framework of a low-energy effective field theory. It turns out that with the present DEAR central values for the kaonic hydrogen ground-state energy and width, a solution for a0 and a1 exists only in a restricted domain of input values for the kaon-deuteron scattering length. Consequently, measuring this scattering length imposes stringent constraints on the theoretical description of the kaon-deuteron interactions at low energies.

Isospin-breaking corrections in the pion-deuteron scattering length

It is shown that isospin-breaking corrections to the pion-deuteron scattering length can be very large, because of the vanishing of the isospin-symmetric contribution to this scattering length at leading order in chiral perturbation theory. We further demonstrate that these corrections can explain the bulk of the discrepancy between the recent experimental data on pionic hydrogen and pionic deuterium. We also give the first determination of the electromagnetic low-energy constant f1.

The pion-nucleon scattering lengths from pionic deuterium

We use the framework of effective field theories to discuss the determination of the S-wave πN scattering lengths from the recent high-precision measurements of pionic deuterium observables. The theoretical analysis proceeds in several steps. Initially, the precise value of the pion-deuteron scattering length a_{πd} is extracted from the data. Next, a_{πd} is related to the S-wave πN scattering lengths a_+ and a_-. We discuss the use of this information for constraining the values of these scattering lengths in the full analysis, which also includes the input from the pionic hydrogen energy shift and width measurements, and throughly investigate the accuracy limits for this procedure. In this paper, we also give a detailed comparison to other effective field theory approaches, as well as with the earlier work on the subject, carried out within the potential model and multiple scattering framework.

Spectrum and decays of kaonic hydrogen

By using the non-relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to bound states, a complete expression for the isospin-breaking corrections to the energy levels and the decay widths of kaonic hydrogen is obtained up-to-and-including O(alpha,m_d-m_u) in QCD. It is demonstrated that, although the leading-order corrections at O(alpha^{1/2},(m_d-m_u)^{1/2}) emerging due to the unitarity cusp, are huge, they can be expressed solely in terms of the KN S-wave scattering lengths. Consequently, at leading order, it is possible to derive parameter-free modified Deser-type relations, which can be used to extract the scattering lengths from the hadronic atom data.
