Channel linear Weingarten surfaces in space forms

Channel linear Weingarten surfaces in space forms are investigated in a Lie sphere geometric setting, which allows for a uniform treatment of different ambient geometries. We show that any channel linear Weingarten surface in a space form is isothermic and, in particular, a surface of revolution in its ambient space form. We obtain explicit parametrisations for channel surfaces of constant Gauss curvature in space forms, and thereby for a large class of linear Weingarten surfaces up to parallel transformation.

Symmetry breaking in geometry

A geometric mechanism that may, in analogy to similar notions in physics, be considered as "symmetry breaking" in geometry is described, and several instances of this mechanism in differential geometry are discussed: it is shown how spontaneous symmetry breaking may occur, and it is discussed how explicit symmetry breaking may be used to tackle certain geometric problems. A systematic study of symmetry breaking in geometry is proposed, and some preliminary thoughts on further research are formulated.

Notes on flat fronts in hyperbolic space

We give a short introduction to discrete flat fronts in hyperbolic space and prove that any discrete flat front in the mixed area sense admits a Weierstrass representation.

Discrete cyclic systems and circle congruences

We discuss integrable discretizations of 3-dimensional cyclic systems, that is, orthogonal coordinate systems with one family of circular coordinate lines. In particular, the underlying circle congruences are investigated in detail, and characterized by the existence of a certain flat connection. Within the developed framework, discrete cyclic systems with a family of discrete flat fronts in hyperbolic space and discrete cyclic systems, where all coordinate surfaces are discrete Dupin cyclides, are investigated.

Discrete channel surfaces

We present a definition of discrete channel surfaces in Lie sphere geometry, which reflects several properties for smooth channel surfaces. Various sets of data, defined at vertices, on edges or on faces, are associated with a discrete channel surface that may be used to reconstruct the underlying particular discrete Legendre map. As an application we investigate isothermic discrete channel surfaces and prove a discrete version of Vessiot's Theorem.

Polynomial Conserved Quantities of Lie Applicable Surfaces

Using the gauge theoretic approach for Lie applicable surfaces, we characterise certain subclasses of surfaces in terms of polynomial conserved quantities. These include isothermic and Guichard surfaces of conformal geometry and $L$-isothermic surfaces of Laguerre geometry. In this setting one can see that the well known transformations available for these surfaces are induced by the transformations of the underlying Lie applicable surfaces. We also consider linear Weingarten surfaces in this setting and develop a new Bäcklund-type transformation for these surfaces.

Quadrics and Scherk towers

We investigate the relation between quadrics and their Christoffel duals on the one hand, and certain zero mean curvature surfaces and their Gauss maps on the other hand. To study the relation between timelike minimal surfaces and the Christoffel duals of 1-sheeted hyperboloids we introduce para-holomorphic elliptic functions. The curves of type change for real isothermic surfaces of mixed causal type turn out to be aligned with the real curvature line net.

Curvilinear coordinates on generic conformally flat hypersurfaces and constant curvature 2-metrics

There is a one-to-one correspondence between associated families of generic conformally flat (local-)hypersurfaces in 4-dimensional space forms and conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition. In this paper, we study the space of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition: for a conformally flat 3-metric with the Guichard condition in the interior of the space, an evolution of orthogonal (local-) Riemannian $2$-metrics with constant Gauss curvature $-1$ is determined; for a $2$-metric belonging to a certain class of orthogonal analytic $2$-metrics with constant Gauss curvature $-1$, a one-parameter family of conformally flat 3-metrics with the Guichard condition is determined as evolutions issuing from the $2$-metric.

The surfaces capable of division into Infinitesimal Squares by their Curves of Curvature

Classically, isothermic surfaces are characterized as those surfaces which are "divisible into infinitesimal squares by their curvature lines". This characterization is the direct analogue to the definition of discrete isothermic nets. In order to understand the relations between the discrete and the smooth theory better, it is described how to give the classical characterization a rigorous meaning in the sense of modern differential geometry.

Moebius geometry of surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic space

Various transformations of isothermic surfaces are discussed and their interrelations are analyzed. Applications to cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and their minimal cousins in Euclidean space are presented: the Umehara-Yamada perturbation, the classical and Bryant's Weierstrass type representations, and the duality for cmc-1 surfaces are interpreted in terms of transformations of isothermic surfaces. A new Weierstrass type representation is introduced and a Moebius geometric characterization of cmc-1 surfaces in hyperbolic space and minimal surfaces in Euclidean space is given.

Supplement on Curved flats in the space of point pairs and Isothermic surfaces: A Quaternionic Calculus

A quaternionic calculus for surface pairs in the conformal 4-sphere is elaborated. This calculus is then used to discuss the relation between curved flats in the symmetric space of point pairs and Darboux and Christoffel pairs of isothermic surfaces. A new viewpoint on relations between surfaces of constant mean curvature in certain space forms is presented --- in particular, a new form of Bryant's Weierstrass type representation for surfaces of constant mean curvature 1 in hyperbolic 3-space is given.

A discrete version of the Darboux transform for isothermic surfaces

We study Christoffel and Darboux transforms of discrete isothermic nets in 4-dimensional Euclidean space: definitions and basic properties are derived. Analogies with the smooth case are discussed and a definition for discrete Ribaucour congruences is given. Surfaces of constant mean curvature are special among all isothermic surfaces: they can be characterized by the fact that their parallel constant mean curvature surfaces are Christoffel and Darboux transforms at the same time. This characterization is used to define discrete nets of constant mean curvature. Basic properties of discrete nets of constant mean curvature are derived.
