Radial multipliers on reduced free products of operator algebras

Let A_i be a family of unital C*-algebras, respectively, of von Neumann algebras and phi: N_0 \to C. We show that if a Hankel matrix related to phi is trace-class, then there exists a unique completely bounded map M_phi on the reduced free product of the A_i, which acts as an radial multiplier. Hereby we generalize a result of Wysoczański for Herz-Schur multipliers on reduced group C*-algebras for free products of groups.

Asymptotic expansions for the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble

Let g:{\mathbb R} --> {\mathbb C} be a C^{\infty}-function with all derivatives bounded and let tr_n denote the normalized trace on the n x n matrices. In the paper [EM] Ercolani and McLaughlin established asymptotic expansions of the mean value E{tr_n(g(X_n))} for a rather general class of random matrices X_n,including the Gaussian Unitary Ensemble (GUE). Using an analytical approach, we provide in the present paper an alternative proof of this asymptotic expansion in the GUE case. Specifically we derive for a GUE random matrix X_n that E{tr_n(g(X_n))}= \frac{1}{2π}\int_{-2}^2 g(x)\sqrt{4-x^2} dx +\sum_{j=1}^k\frac{α_j(g)}{n^{2j}}+ O(n^{-2k-2}), where k is an arbitrary positive integer. Considered as mappings of g, we determine the coefficients α_j(g), j\in{\mathbb N}, as distributions (in the sense of L. Schwarts). We derive a similar asymptotic expansion for the covariance Cov{Tr_n[f(X_n)],Tr_n[g(X_n)]}, where f is a function of the same kind as g, and Tr_n=n tr_n. Special focus is drawn to the case where g(x)=1/(z-x) and f(x)=1/(w-x) for non-real complex numbers z and w. In this case the mean and covariance considered above correspond to, respectively, the one- and two-dimensional Cauchy (or Stieltjes) transform of the GUE(n,1/n).

Fusion rules on a parametrized series of graphs

A series of pairs of graphs (Gamma_k, Gamma'_k), k = 0,1,2,... has been considered as candidates for dual pairs of principal graphs of subfactors of small Jones index above 4 and it has recently been proved that the pair (Gamma_k, Gamma'_k) comes from a subfactor if and only if k = 0 or k =1. We show that nevertheless there exists a unique fusion system compatible with this pair of graphs for all non-negative integers k.

Factorization and dilation problems for completely positive maps on von Neumann algebras

We study factorization and dilation properties of Markov maps between von Neumann algebras equipped with normal faithful states, i.e., completely positive unital maps which preserve the given states and also intertwine their automorphism groups. The starting point for our investigation has been the question of existence of non-factorizable Markov maps, as formulated by C. Anantharaman-Delaroche. We provide simple examples of non-factorizable Markov maps on M_n(C) for all n\geq 3, as well as an example of a one-parameter semigroup (T(t))_{t\geq 0} of Markov maps on M_4(C) such that T(t) fails to be factorizable for all small values of t > 0. As applications, we solve in the negative an open problem in quantum information theory concerning an asymptotic version of the quantum Birkhoff conjecture, as well as we sharpen the existing lower bound estimate for the best constant in the noncommutative little Grothendieck inequality.

A reduction method for noncommutative $L_p$-spaces and applications

We consider the reduction of problems on general noncommutative $L_p$-spaces to the corresponding ones on those associated with finite von Neumann algebras. The main tool is a unpublished result of the first named author which approximates any noncommutative $L_p$-space by tracial ones. We show that under some natural conditions a map between two von Neumann algebras extends to their crossed products by a locally compact abelian group or to their noncommutative $L_p$-spaces. We present applications of these results to the theory of noncommutative martingale inequalities by reducing most recent general noncommutative martingale/ergodic inequalities to those in the tracial case.

Schur Multipliers and Spherical Functions on Homogeneous Trees

Let X be a homogeneous tree of degree q+1 (for q between 2 and infinity) and let f be a complex function on X times X for which f(x,y) only depend on the distance between x and y in X. Our main result gives a necessary and sufficient condition for such a function to be a Schur multiplier on X times X. Moreover, we find a closed expression for the Schur norm of f. As applications, we obtain a closed expression for the completely bounded Fourier multiplier norm of the radial functions on the free (non-abelian) group on N generators (for N between 2 and infinity) and of the spherical functions on the p-adic group PGL_2(Q_q) for every prime number q.

New Presentations of Thompson's Groups and Applications

We find new presentations for the Thompson's groups $F$, the derived group $F^{'}$ and the intermediate group $D$. These presentations have a common ground in that their relators are the same and only the generating sets differ. As an application of these presentations we extract the following consequences: the cost of the group $F^{'}$ is 1 hence the cost cannot decide the (non)amenability question of $F$; the $II_1$ factor $L(F^{'})$ is inner asymptotically abelian and the reduced $C^*$-algebra of $F$ is not residually finite dimensional.

Resolvents of R-Diagonal Operators

We consider the resolvent $(λ-a)^{-1}$ of any $R$-diagonal operator $a$ in a $\mathrm{II}_1$-factor. Our main theorem gives a universal asymptotic formula for the norm of such a resolvent. En route to its proof, we calculate the $R$-transform of the operator $|λ-c|^2$ where $c$ is Voiculescu's circular operator, and give an asymptotic formula for the negative moments of $|λ-a|^2$ for any $R$-diagonal $a$. We use a mixture of complex analytic and combinatorial techniques, each giving finer information where the other can give only coarse detail. In particular, we introduce {\em partition structure diagrams}, a new combinatorial structure arising in free probability.

Cyclic p-roots of prime lengths p and related complex Hadamard matrices

In this paper it is proved, that for every prime number p, the set of cyclic p-roots in C^p is finite. Moreover the number of cyclic p-roots counted with multiplicity is equal to (2p-2)!/(p-1)!^2. In particular, the number of complex circulant Hadamard matrices of size p, with diagonal entries equal to 1, is less or equal to (2p-2)!/(p-1)!^2.

All cyclic p-roots of index 3, found by symmetry-preserving calculations

When using a Groebner basis to solve the highly symmetric system of algebraic equations defining the cyclic p-roots, one has the feeling that much of the advantage of computerized symbolic algebra over hand calculation is lost through the fact that the symmetry is immediately ``thrown out'' by the calculations. In this paper, the problem of finding (for all relevant primes p) all cyclic p-roots of index 3 is treated with the symmetry preserved through the calculations. Once we had found the relevant formulas, using MAPLE and MATHEMATICA, the calculations could even be made by hand. On the other hand, with respect to a straightforward attack with Groebner basis, it is not even clear how this could be organized for a general p. In other terminologies, our results involve listings of all bi-unimodular sequences constant on the cosets of the group G_0 of cubic residues, or equivalently all circulant complex Hadamard matrices related to G_0. The corresponding problem for bi-unimodular sequences of index 2 was solved by the first named author in 1989 and shortly after solved independently by de la Harpe and Jones in the case p = 1 (mod 4) and by Munemasa and Watatani in the case p = 3 (mod 4).

The Effros-Ruan conjecture for bilinear forms on C^*-algebras

In 1991 Effros and Ruan conjectured that a certain Grothendieck-type inequality for a bilinear form on C$^*$-algebras holds if (and only if) the bilinear form is jointly completely bounded. In 2002 Pisier and Shlyakhtenko proved that this inequality holds in the more general setting of operator spaces, provided that the operator spaces in question are exact. Moreover, they proved that the conjecture of Effros and Ruan holds for pairs of C$^*$-algebras, of which at least one is exact. In this paper we prove that the Effros-Ruan conjecture holds for general C$^*$-algebras, with constant one. More precisely, we show that for every jointly completely bounded (for short, j.c.b.) bilinear form on a pair of C$^*$-algebras $A$ and $B$, there exist states $f_1$, $f_2$ on $A$ and $g_1$, $g_2$ on $B$ such that for all $a\in A$ and $b\in B$, |u(a, b)| \leq ||u||_{jcb}(f_1(aa^*)^{1/2}g_1(b^*b)^{1/2} + f_2(a^*a)^{1/2}g_2(bb^*)^{1/2}) . While the approach by Pisier and Shlyakhtenko relies on free probability techniques, our proof uses more classical operator algebra theory, namely, Tomita-Takesaki theory and special properties of the Powers factors of type III$_λ$, $0< λ< 1$ .

Classification of hyperfinite factors up to completely bounded isomorphism of their preduals

In this paper we consider the following problem: When are the preduals of two hyperfinite (=injective) factors $\M$ and $\N$ (on separable Hilbert spaces) cb-isomorphic (i.e., isomorphic as operator spaces)? We show that if $\M$ is semifinite and $\N$ is type III, then their preduals are not cb-isomorphic. Moreover, we construct a one-parameter family of hyperfinite type III$_0$-factors with mutually non cb-isomorphic preduals, and we give a characterization of those hyperfinite factors $\M$ whose preduals are cb-isomorphic to the predual of the unique hyperfinite type III$_1$-factor. In contrast, Christensen and Sinclair proved in 1989 that all infinite dimensional hyperfinite factors with separable preduals are cb-isomorphic. More recently Rosenthal, Sukochev and the first-named author proved that all hyperfinite type III$_λ$-factors, where $0< λ\leq 1$, have cb-isomorphic preduals.

A new application of Random Matrices: Ext(C*_{red}(F_2)) is not a group

In the process of developing the theory of free probability and free entropy, Voiculescu introduced in 1991 a random matrix model for a free semicircular system. Since then, random matrices have played a key role in von Neumann algebra theory (cf. [V8], [V9]). The main result of this paper is the following extension of Voiculescu's random matrix result: Let X_1^(n),...,X_r^(n) be a system of r stochastically independent n by n Gaussian self-adjoint random matrices as in Voiculescu's random matrix paper [V4], and let (x_1,...,x_r) be a semi-circular system in a C*-probability space. Then for every polynomial p in r noncommuting variables lim_{n->oo}||p(X_1^(n),...,X_r^(n))|| = ||p(x_1,...,x_r)||, for almost all omega in the underlying probability space. We use the result to show that the Ext-invariant for the reduced C*-algebra of the free group on 2 generators is not a group but only a semi-group. This problem has been open since Anderson in 1978 found the first example of a C*-algebra A for which Ext(A) is not a group.

On the best constants in noncommutative Khintchine-type inequalities

We obtain new proofs with improved constants of the Khintchine-type inequality with matrix coefficients in two cases. The first case is the Pisier and Lust-Piquard noncommutative Khintchine inequality for $p=1$, where we obtain the sharp lower bound of $\frac1{\sqrt{2}}$ in the complex Gaussian case and for the sequence of functions $\{e^{i2^nt}\}_{n=1}^\infty$ . The second case is Junge's recent Khintchine-type inequality for subspaces of the operator space $R\oplus C$, which he used to construct a cb-embedding of the operator Hilbert space $OH$ into the predual of a hyperfinite factor. Also in this case, we obtain a sharp lower bound of $\frac1{\sqrt{2}}$ . As a consequence, it follows that any subspace of a quotient of $(R\oplus C)^*$ is cb-isomorphic to a subspace of the predual of the hyperfinite factor of type $III_1$, with cb-isomorphism constant $\leq \sqrt{2}$ . In particular, the operator Hilbert space $OH$ has this property.

Invariant Subspaces for Operators in a General II_1-factor

It is shown that to every operator T in a general von Neumann factor M of type II_1 and to every Borel set B in the complex plane, one can associate a largest, closed, T-invariant subspace, K = K_T(B), affiliated with M, such that the Brown measure of T|_K is concentrated on B. Moreover, K is T-hyperinvariant, and the Brown measure of (1-P_K)T|_(1-P_K)(H) is concentrated on C\B. In particular, if T has a Brown measure which is not concentrated on a singleton, then there exists a non-trivial, closed, T-hyperinvariant subspace. Furthermore, it is shown that for every T in M, the limit A=\lim_{n\to\infty}[(T^n)* T^n]^{1/2n} exists in the strong operator topology and K_T(\bar{B(0,r)})=1_{[0,r]}(A), r>0.

Proper metrics on locally compact groups, and proper affine isometric actions on Banach spaces

In this article it is proved, that every locally compact second countable group has a left invariant metric d, which generates the topology on G, and which is proper, ie. every closed d-bounded set in G is compact. Moreover, we obtain the following extension of a result due to N. Brown and E. Guentner: Every locally compact second countable $G$ admits a proper affine action on the reflexive and strictly convex Banach space $\bigoplus^{\infty}_{n=1} L^{2n}(G, dμ),$ where the direct sum is taken in the $l^2$-sense.

Brown Measures of Unbounded Operators Affiliated with a Finite von Neumann Algebra

In this paper we generalize Brown's spectral distribution measure to a large class of unbounded operators affiliated with a finite von Neumann algebra. Moreover, we compute the Brown measure of all unbounded R-diagonal operators in this class. As a particular case, we determine the Brown measure of z=xy^{-1}, where (x,y) is a circular system in the sense of Voiculescu, and we prove that for all positive integers n, z^n is in L^p(M) iff 0<p< 2/(n+1).

A Random Matrix Approach to the Lack of Projections in C*_red(F_2)

In 1982 Pimsner and Voiculescu computed the K_0- and K_1-groups of the reduced group C*-algebra C*_red(F_k) of the free group F_k on k generators and settled thereby a long standing conjecture: C*_red(F_k) has no projections except for the trivial projections 0 and 1. Later simpler proofs of this conjecture were found by methods from K-theory or from non-commutative differential geometry. In this paper we provide a new proof of the fact that C*_red(F_k) is projectionless. The new proof is based on random matrices and is obtained by a refinement of the methods recently used by the first and the third named author to show that the semigroup Ext(C*_red(F_k)) is not a group for k >= 2. By the same type of methods we also obtain that two phenomena proved by Bai and Silverstein for certain classes of random matrices: ``no eigenvalues outside (a small neighbourhood of) the support of the limiting distribution'' and ``exact separation of eigenvalues by gaps in the limiting distribution'' also hold for arbitrary non-commutative selfadjoint polynomials of independent GUE, GOE or GSE random matrices with matrix coefficients.
