Yang-Mills-Higgs connections on Calabi-Yau manifolds, II

In this paper we study Higgs and co-Higgs $G$-bundles on compact Kähler manifolds $X$. Our main results are: (1) If $X$ is Calabi-Yau, and $(E,\,θ)$ is a semistable Higgs or co-Higgs $G$-bundle on $X$, then the principal $G$-bundle $E$ is semistable. In particular, there is a deformation retract of ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ onto $\mathcal M(G)$, where $\mathcal M(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern classes on $X$, and analogously, ${\mathcal M}_H(G)$ is the moduli space of semistable principal Higgs $G$-bundles with vanishing rational Chern classes. (2) Calabi-Yau manifolds are characterized as those compact Kähler manifolds whose tangent bundle is semistable for every Kähler class, and have the following property: if $(E,\,θ)$ is a semistable Higgs or co-Higgs vector bundle, then $E$ is semistable.

Higgs bundles and fundamental group schemes

Relying on a notion of "numerical effectiveness" for Higgs bundles, we show that the category of "numerically flat" Higgs vector bundles on a smooth projective variety $X$ is a Tannakian category. We introduce the associated group scheme, that we call the "Higgs fundamental group scheme of $X$," and show that its properties are related to a conjecture about the vanishing of the Chern classes of numerically flat Higgs vector bundles.

Monads for framed sheaves on Hirzebruch surfaces

We define monads for framed torsion-free sheaves on Hirzebruch surfaces and use them to construct moduli spaces for these objects. These moduli spaces are smooth algebraic varieties, and we show that they are fine by constructing a universal monad.

Framed sheaves on root stacks and supersymmetric gauge theories on ALE spaces

We develop a new approach to the study of supersymmetric gauge theories on ALE spaces using the theory of framed sheaves on root toric stacks, which illuminates relations with gauge theories on $\mathbb{R}^4$ and with two-dimensional conformal field theory. We construct a stacky compactification of the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, which is a projective toric orbifold $\mathscr{X}_k$ such that $\mathscr{X}_k\setminus X_k$ is a $\mathbb{Z}_k$-gerbe. We construct moduli spaces of torsion free sheaves on $\mathscr{X}_k$ which are framed along the compactification gerbe. We prove that this moduli space is a smooth quasi-projective variety, compute its dimension, and classify its fixed points under the natural induced toric action. We use this construction to compute the partition functions and correlators of chiral BPS operators for $\mathcal{N}=2$ quiver gauge theories on $X_k$ with nontrivial holonomies at infinity. The partition functions are computed with and without couplings to bifundamental matter hypermultiplets and expressed in terms of toric blowup formulas, which relate them to the corresponding Nekrasov partition functions on the affine toric subsets of $X_k$. We compare our new partition functions with previous computations, explore their connections to the representation theory of affine Lie algebras, and find new constraints on fractional instanton charges in the coupling to fundamental matter. We show that the partition functions in the low energy limit are characterised by the Seiberg-Witten curves, and in some cases also by suitable blowup equations involving Riemann theta-functions on the Seiberg-Witten curve with characteristics related to the nontrivial holonomies.

Yang-Mills-Higgs connections on Calabi-Yau manifolds

Let $X$ be a compact connected Kähler--Einstein manifold with $c_1(TX)\, \geq\, 0$. If there is a semistable Higgs vector bundle $(E\,,θ)$ on $X$ with $θ\,\not=\,0$, then we show that $c_1(TX)=0$, any $X$ satisfying this condition is called a Calabi--Yau manifold, and it admits a Ricci--flat Kähler form \cite{Ya}. Let $(E\,,θ)$ be a polystable Higgs vector bundle on a compact Ricci--flat Kähler manifold $X$. Let $h$ be an Hermitian structure on $E$ satisfying the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation for $(E\,,θ)$. We prove that $h$ also satisfies the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation for $(E\,,0)$. A similar result is proved for Hermitian structures on principal Higgs bundles on $X$ satisfying the Yang--Mills--Higgs equation.

Restricting Higgs bundles to curves

We determine some classes of varieties X - that include the varieties with numerically effective tangent bundle - satisfying the following property: if E is a Higgs bundle such that f*E is semistable for any morphism f from a smooth projective curve to X, then E is slope semistable and the discriminant of E is zero in H4(X,R). We also characterize some classes of varieties such that the underlying vector bundle of a slope semistable Higgs bundle is always slope semistable.

Symplectic instanton bundles on P3 and 't Hooft instantons

We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r+1,\ n-r\equiv 1(\mathrm{mod}2)$. We introduce the notion of tame symplectic instantons by excluding a kind of pathological monads and show that the locus $I^*_{n,r}$ of tame symplectic instantons is irreducible and has the expected dimension, equal to $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$. The proof is inherently based on a relation between the spaces $I^*_{n,r}$ and the moduli spaces of 't Hooft instantons

Nonabelian holomorphic Lie algebroid extensions

We classify nonabelian extensions of Lie algebroids in the holomorphic category. Moreover we study a spectral sequence associated to any such extension. This spectral sequence generalizes the Hochschild-Serre spectral sequence for Lie algebras to the holomorphic Lie algebroid setting. As an application, we show that the hypercohomology of the Atiyah algebroid of a line bundle has a natural Hodge structure.

Framed sheaves on projective stacks

Given a normal projective irreducible stack $\mathscr X$ over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero we consider framed sheaves on $\mathscr X$, i.e., pairs $(\mathcal E,ϕ_{\mathcal E})$, where $\mathcal E$ is a coherent sheaf on $\mathscr X$ and $ϕ_{\mathcal E}$ is a morphism from $\mathcal E$ to a fixed coherent sheaf $\mathcal F$. After introducing a suitable notion of (semi)stability, we construct a projective scheme, which is a moduli space for semistable framed sheaves with fixed Hilbert polynomial, and an open subset of it, which is a fine moduli space for stable framed sheaves. If $\mathscr X$ is a projective irreducible orbifold of dimension two and $\mathcal F$ a locally free sheaf on a smooth divisor $\mathscr D\subset \mathscr X$ satisfying certain conditions, we consider $(\mathscr{D}, \mathcal{F})$-framed sheaves, i.e., framed sheaves $(\mathcal E,ϕ_{\mathcal E})$ with $\mathcal E$ a torsion-free sheaf which is locally free in a neighborhood of $\mathscr D$, and ${ϕ_{\mathcal{E}}}_{| \mathscr{D}}$ an isomorphism. These pairs are $μ$-stable for a suitable choice of a parameter entering the (semi)stability condition, and of the polarization of $\mathscr X$. This implies the existence of a fine moduli space parameterizing isomorphism classes of $(\mathscr{D}, \mathcal{F})$-framed sheaves on $\mathscr{X}$ with fixed Hilbert polynomial, which is a quasi-projective scheme. In an appendix we develop the example of stacky Hirzebruch surfaces. This is the first paper of a project aimed to provide an algebro-geometric approach to the study of gauge theories on a wide class of 4-dimensional Riemannian manifolds by means of framed sheaves on "stacky" compactifications of them. In particular, in a subsequent paper we will use these results to study gauge theories on ALE spaces of type $A_k$.

N=2 quiver gauge theories on A-type ALE spaces

We survey and compare recent approaches to the computation of the partition functions and correlators of chiral BPS observables in $\mathcal{N}=2$ gauge theories on ALE spaces based on quiver varieties and the minimal resolution $X_k$ of the $A_{k-1}$ toric singularity $\mathbb{C}^2/\mathbb{Z}_k$, in light of their recently conjectured duality with two-dimensional coset conformal field theories. We review and elucidate the rigorous constructions of gauge theories for a particular family of ALE spaces, using their relation to the cohomology of moduli spaces of framed torsion free sheaves on a suitable orbifold compactification of $X_k$. We extend these computations to generic $\mathcal{N}=2$ superconformal quiver gauge theories, obtaining in these instances new constraints on fractional instanton charges, a rigorous proof of the Nekrasov master formula, and new quantizations of Hitchin systems based on the underlying Seiberg-Witten geometry.

Approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures on semistable principal Higgs bundles

We generalize the Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence between semistability and the existence of approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structures to the case of principal Higgs bundles. We prove that a principal Higgs bundle on a compact Kaehler manifold, with structure group a connected linear algebraic reductive group, is semistable if and only if it admits an approximate Hermitian-Yang-Mills structure.

Donagi-Markman cubic for the generalised Hitchin system

Donagi and Markman (1993) have shown that the infinitesimal period map for an algebraic completely integrable Hamiltonian system is encoded in a section of the third symmetric power of the cotangent bundle to the base of the system. For the ordinary Hitchin system the cubic is given by a formula of Balduzzi and Pantev. We prove that the Balduzzi--Pantev formula holds along maximal rank symplectic leaves of the G-generalised Hitchin system.

Uhlenbeck-Donaldson compactification for framed sheaves on projective surfaces

We construct a compactification $M^{μss}$ of the Uhlenbeck-Donaldson type for the moduli space of slope stable framed bundles. This is a kind of a moduli space of slope semistable framed sheaves. We show that there exists a projective morphism $γ\colon M^{ss} \to M^{μss}$, where $M^{ss}$ is the moduli space of S-equivalence classes of Gieseker-semistable framed sheaves. The space $M^{μss}$ has a natural set-theoretic stratification which allows one, via a Hitchin-Kobayashi correspondence, to compare it with the moduli spaces of framed ideal instantons.

On localization in holomorphic equivariant cohomology

We prove a localization formula for a "holomorphic equivariant cohomology" attached to the Atiyah algebroid of an equivariant holomorphic vector bundle. This generalizes Feng-Ma, Carrell-Liebermann, Baum-Bott and K. Liu's localization formulas.

Picard group of hypersurfaces in toric 3-folds

We show that the usual sufficient criterion for a generic hypersurface in a smooth projective manifold to have the same Picard number as the ambient variety can be generalized to hypersurfaces in complete simplicial toric varieties. This sufficient condition is always satisfied by generic K3 surfaces embedded in Fano toric 3-folds.

Moduli of symplectic instanton vector bundles of higher rank on projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$

Symplectic instanton vector bundles on the projective space $\mathbb{P}^3$ constitute a natural generalization of mathematical instantons of rank 2. We study the moduli space $I_{n,r}$ of rank-$2r$ symplectic instanton vector bundles on $\mathbb{P}^3$ with $r\ge2$ and second Chern class $n\ge r,\ n\equiv r({\rm mod}2)$. We give an explicit construction of an irreducible component $I^*_{n,r}$ of this space for each such value of $n$ and show that $I^*_{n,r}$ has the expected dimension $4n(r+1)-r(2r+1)$.

Q-factorial Laurent rings

Dolgachev proved that, for any field k, the ring naturally associated to a generic Laurent polynomial in d variables, $d \geq 4$, is factorial. We prove a sufficient condition for the ring associated to a very general complex Laurent polynomial in d=3 variables to be Q-factorial.
