Classification of the Second Minimal Odd Periodic Orbits in the Sharkovskii Ordering

This paper presents full classification of second minimal odd periodic orbits of a continuous endomorphisms on the real line. A $(2k+1)$-periodic orbit ($k\geq 3$) is called second minimal for the map $f$, if $2k-1$ is a minimal period of $f$ in the Sharkovskii ordering. We prove that there are $4k-3$ types of second minimal $(2k+1)$-orbits, each characterized with unique cyclic permutation and directed graph of transitions with accuracy up to inverses.

Optimal Control of Coefficients in Parabolic Free Boundary Problems Modeling Laser Ablation

Inverse Stefan problem arising in modeling of laser ablation of biomedical tissues is analyzed, where information on the coefficients, heat flux on the fixed boundary, and density of heat sources are missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundary. Optimal control framework is employed, where the missing data and the free boundary are components of the control vector, and optimality criteria are based on the final moment measurement of the temperature and position of the free boundary. Discretization by finite differences is pursued, and convergence of the discrete optimal control problems to the original problem is proven.

Evolution of Interfaces for the Nonlinear Double Degenerate Parabolic Equation of Turbulent Filtration with Absorption

We prove the short-time asymptotic formula for the interfaces and local solutions near the interfaces for the nonlinear double degenerate reaction-diffusion equation of turbulent filtration with strong absorption \[ u_t=\Big(|(u^{m})_x|^{p-1}(u^{m})_x\Big)_x-bu^β, \, mp>1, \, β>0. \] Full classification is pursued in terms of the nonlinearity parameters $m, p,β$ and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. Numerical analysis using a weighted essentially nonoscillatory (WENO) scheme with interface capturing is implemented, and comparison of numerical and analytical results is presented.

Second Minimal Orbits, Sharkovski Ordering and Universality in Chaos

This paper introduces the notion of second minimal $n$-periodic orbit of the continuous map on the interval according as if $n$ is a successor of the minimal period of the map in Sharkovski ordering. We pursue classification of second minimal $7$-orbits in terms of cyclic permutations and digraphs. It is proved that there are 9 types of second minimal orbits with accuracy up to inverses. The result is applied to the problem on the distribution of periodic windows within the chaotic regime of the bifurcation diagram of the one-parameter family of unimodal maps. It is revealed that by fixing the maximum number of appearances of the periodic windows there is a universal pattern of distribution. In particular, the first appearance of all the orbits is always a minimal orbit, while the second appearance is a second minimal orbit. It is observed that the second appearance of 7-orbit is a second minimal 7-orbit with Type 1 digraph. The reason for the relevance of the Type 1 second minimal orbit is the fact that the topological structure of the unimodal map with single maximum is equivalent to the structure of the Type 1 piecewise monotonic endomorphism associated with the second minimal 7-orbit. Yet another important report of this paper is the revelation of the universal pattern dynamics with respect to increased number of appearances.

Frechet Differentiability in Besov Spaces in the Optimal Control of Parabolic Free Boundary Problems

We consider the inverse Stefan type free boundary problem, where information on the boundary heat flux and density of the sources are missing and must be found along with the temperature and the free boundary. We pursue optimal control framework where boundary heat flux, density of sources, and free boundary are components of the control vector. The optimality criteria consists of the minimization of the $L_2$-norm declinations of the temperature measurements at the final moment, phase transition temperature, and final position of the free boundary. We prove the Frechet differentiability in Besov spaces, and derive the formula for the Frechet differential under minimal regularity assumptions on the data. The result implies a necessary condition for optimal control and opens the way to the application of projective gradient methods in Besov spaces for the numerical solution of the inverse Stefan problem.

Evolution of Interfaces for the Nonlinear Parabolic p-Laplacian Type Reaction-Diffusion Equations

We present a full classification of the short-time behaviour of the interfaces and local solutions to the nonlinear parabolic $p$-Laplacian type reaction-diffusion equation of non-Newtonian elastic filtration \[ u_t-\Big(|u_x|^{p-2}u_x\Big)_x+bu^β=0, \ p>2, β>0 \] The interface may expand, shrink, or remain stationary as a result of the competition of the diffusion and reaction terms near the interface, expressed in terms of the parameters $p,β, sign~b$, and asymptotics of the initial function near its support. In all cases, we prove the explicit formula for the interface and the local solution with accuracy up to constant coefficients. The methods of the proof are based on nonlinear scaling laws, and a barrier technique using special comparison theorems in irregular domains with characteristic boundary curves.

On the Optimal Control of the Free Boundary Problems for the Second Order Parabolic Equations. II.Convergence of the Method of Finite Differences

We develop a new variational formulation of the inverse Stefan problem, where information on the heat flux on the fixed boundary is missing and must be found along with the temperature and free boundary. We employ optimal control framework, where boundary heat flux and free boundary are components of the control vector, and optimality criteria consist of the minimization of the sum of $L_2$-norm declinations from the available measurement of the temperature flux on the fixed boundary and available information on the phase transition temperature on the free boundary. This approach allows one to tackle situations when the phase transition temperature is not known explicitly, and is available through measurement with possible error. It also allows for the development of iterative numerical methods of least computational cost due to the fact that for every given control vector, the parabolic PDE is solved in a fixed region instead of full free boundary problem. In {\it Inverse Problems and Imaging, 7, 2(2013), 307-340} we proved well-posedness in Sobolev spaces framework and convergence of time-discretized optimal control problems. In this paper we perform full discretization and prove convergence of the discrete optimal control problems to the original problem both with respect to cost functional and control.

The Wiener Test for the Removability of the Logarithmic Singularity for the Elliptic PDEs with Measurable Coefficients and Its Consequences

This paper introduces the notion of $log$-regularity (or $log$-irregularity) of the boundary point $ζ$ (possibly $ζ=\infty$) of the arbitrary open subset $Ω$ of the Greenian deleted neigborhood of $ζ$ in $R^2$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the $log$-harmonic measure of $ζ$ is null (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the removability of the logarithmic singularity, that is to say for the existence of a unique solution to the Dirichlet problem in $Ω$ in a class $O(\log |\cdot - ζ|)$ is established in terms of the Wiener test for the $log$-regularity of $ζ$. From a topological point of view, the Wiener test at $ζ$ presents the minimal thinness criteria of sets near $ζ$ in minimal fine topology. Precisely, the open set $Ω$ is a deleted neigborhood of $ζ$ in minimal fine topology if and only if $ζ$ is $log$-irregular. From the probabilistic point of view, the Wiener test presents asymptotic law for the $log$-Brownian motion near $ζ$ conditioned on the logarithmic kernel with pole at $ζ$.

Regularity of Infinity for Elliptic Equations with Measurable Coefficients and Its Consequences

This paper introduces a notion of regularity (or irregularity) of the point at infinity for the unbounded open subset of $\rr^{N}$ concerning second order uniformly elliptic equations with bounded and measurable coefficients, according as whether the A-harmonic measure of the point at infinity is zero (or positive). A necessary and sufficient condition for the existence of a unique bounded solution to the Dirichlet problem in an arbitrary open set of $\rr^{N}, N\ge 3$ is established in terms of the Wiener test for the regularity of the point at infinity. It coincides with the Wiener test for the regularity of the point at infinity in the case of Laplace equation. From the topological point of view, the Wiener test at infinity presents thinness criteria of sets near infinity in fine topology. Precisely, the open set is a deleted neigborhood of the point at infinity in fine topology if and only if infinity is irregular.
