Octet baryon magnetic moments at next-to-next-to-leading order in covariant chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the octet baryon magnetic moments in covariant baryon chiral perturbation theory with the extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme up to next-to-next-to-leading order. At this order, there are nine low-energy constants, which cannot be uniquely determined by the seven experimental data alone. We propose two strategies to circumvent this problem. First, we assume that chiral perturbation theory has a certain convergence rate and use this as one additional constraint to fix the low-energy constants by fitting to the experimental data. Second, we fit to lattice QCD simulations to determine the low-energy constants. We then compare the resulting predictions of the light and strange quark mass dependence of the octet baryon magnetic moments by the three mostly studied formulations of baryon chiral perturbation theory, namely, the extended-on-mass-shell, the infrared, and the heavy baryon approach. It is shown that once more precise lattice data become available, one will learn more about the convergence pattern of baryon chiral perturbation theory.

Amplitude analysis of the anomalous decay $η'\toπ^+π^-γ$

In this paper we perform an amplitude analysis of $η'\toπ^+π^-γ$ and confront it with the latest BESIII data. Based on the final-state interaction theorem, we represent the amplitude in terms of an Omnés function multiplied by a form factor that corresponds to the contributions from left-hand cuts and right-hand cuts in the inelastic channels. We also take into account the isospin violation effect induced by $ρ-ω$ mixing. Our results show that the anomaly contribution is mandatory in order to explain the data. Its contribution to the decay width of $Γ(η'\toππγ)$ is larger than that induced by isospin violation. Finally we extract the pole positions of the $ρ$ and $ω$ as well as their corresponding residues.

Exploratory study of possible resonances in the heavy meson - heavy baryon coupled-channel interactions

We use a unitary coupled-channel model to study the $\bar{D} Λ_c - \bar{D} Σ_c$ interactions. In our calculation, SU(3) flavor symmetry is applied to determine the coupling constants. Several resonant and bound states with different spin and parity are dynamically generated in the mass range of the recently observed pentaquarks. The approach is also extended to the hidden beauty sector to study the $B Λ_b - B Σ_b$ interactions. As the $b$-quark mass is heavier than the $c$-quark mass, there are more resonances observed for $B Λ_b - B Σ_b$ interactions and they are more tightly bound.

Scattering of decuplet baryons in chiral effective field theory

A formalism for treating the scattering of decuplet baryons in chiral effective field theory is developed. The minimal Lagrangian and potentials in leading-order SU(3) chiral effective field theory for the interactions of octet baryons ($B$) and decuplet baryons ($D$) for the transitions $BB\to BB$, $BB\leftrightarrow DB$, $DB\to DB$, $BB\leftrightarrow DD$, $DB\leftrightarrow DD$, and $DD\to DD$ are provided. As an application of the formalism we compare with results from lattice QCD simulations for $ΩΩ$ and $NΩ$ scattering. Implications of our results pertinent to the quest for dibaryons are discussed.

Double heavy tri-hadron bound state via delocalized $π$ bond

The number of exotic candidates which are beyond the conventional quark model has grown dramatically during the last decades. Some of them could be viewed as analogues of the deuteron. Similarly, the existence of the triton indicates that bound states formed by three hadrons could also exist. To illustrate this possibility, we study the $DD^*K$ and $BB^*\bar{K}$ systems by using the Born-Oppenheimer Approximation. To leading order, only one-pion exchange potentials are considered, which means that the three constitutes share one virtual pion. That is similar to the role of the delocalized $π$ bond for the formation of Benzene in chemistry. After solving the Schrödinger equation, we find two three-body $DD^*K$ and $BB^*\bar{K}$ bound states with masses $4317.92_{-4.32}^{+3.66}~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $11013.65_{-8.84}^{+8.49}~\mathrm{MeV}$, respectively. The masses of their $D\bar{D}^*K$ and $B\bar{B}^*\bar{K}$ analogues are $4317.92_{-6.55}^{+6.13}~\mathrm{MeV}$ and $11013.65_{-9.02}^{+8.68}~\mathrm{MeV}$. From the experimental side, the $D\bar{D}^*K$ bound state could be found by analyzing the current world data of the $B\to J/ψππK$ process by focusing on the $J/ψπK$ channel. Its confirmation could also help to understand the formation of kaonic nuclei in nuclear physics.

Ab initio calculations of the isotopic dependence of nuclear clustering

Nuclear clustering describes the appearance of structures resembling smaller nuclei such as alpha particles (4He nuclei) within the interior of a larger nucleus. While clustering is important for several well-known examples, much remains to be discovered about the general nature of clustering in nuclei. In this letter we present lattice Monte Carlo calculations based on chiral effective field theory for the ground states of helium, beryllium, carbon, and oxygen isotopes. By computing model-independent measures that probe three- and four-nucleon correlations at short distances, we determine the shape of the alpha clusters and the entanglement of nucleons comprising each alpha cluster with the outside medium. We also introduce a new computational approach called the pinhole algorithm, which solves a long-standing deficiency of auxiliary-field Monte Carlo simulations in computing density correlations relative to the center of mass. We use the pinhole algorithm to determine the proton and neutron density distributions and the geometry of cluster correlations in 12C, 14C, and 16C. The structural similarities among the carbon isotopes suggest that 14C and 16C have excitations analogous to the well-known Hoyle state resonance in 12C.

Extracting the sigma-term from low-energy pion-nucleon scattering

We present an extraction of the pion-nucleon ($πN$) scattering lengths from low-energy $πN$ scattering, by fitting a representation based on Roy-Steiner equations to the low-energy data base. We show that the resulting values confirm the scattering-length determination from pionic atoms, and discuss the stability of the fit results regarding electromagnetic corrections and experimental normalization uncertainties in detail. Our results provide further evidence for a large $πN$ $σ$-term, $σ_{πN}=58(5)$ MeV, in agreement with, albeit less precise than, the determination from pionic atoms.

Isospin analysis of $B\to D^*\bar{D}K$ and the absence of the $Z_c(3900)$ in $B$ decays

We study the isospin amplitudes in the exclusive $B$ to $D^*\bar{D}K$ decay process and fit the available $D^{*0}\bar{D}^0$ invariant mass distributions near threshold. The analysis demonstrates that the production of the isospin triplet $D^*\bar{D}$ state is highly suppressed compared to the isospin singlet one. That explains why the $Z_c(3900)$ has not been found in $B$ decays. In addition, the production of the negative charge-parity state might be further suppressed in the heavy quark limit. These two reasons which are based on the molecular assumption offer the first explanation why the $Z_c(3900)$ is absent in $B$ decays. Further studies of the absence from both the experimental and the theoretical side is extremely important for understanding the nature of the $X(3872)$ and the $Z_c(3900)$.

Wilsonian renormalization group and the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with a multitude of cutoff parameters

The Wilsonian renormalization group approach to the Lippmann-Schwinger equation with a multitude of cutoff parameters is introduced. A system of integro-differential equations for the cutoff-dependent potential is obtained. As an illustration, a perturbative solution of these equations with two cutoff parameters for a simple case of an S-wave low-energy potential in the form of a Taylor series in momenta is obtained. The relevance of the obtained results for the effective field theory approach to nucleon-nucleon scattering is discussed.

Re-examining the $X(4630)$ resonance in the reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrow Λ^+_c\barΛ^-_c$

The reaction $e^+e^-\rightarrow Λ^+_c\barΛ^-_c$ is investigated at energies close to the threshold with emphasis on the role played by the $X(4630)$ resonance. The interaction in the final $Λ^+_c \barΛ^-_c$ system, constructed within chiral effective field theory and supplemented by a pole diagram that represents a bare $X(4630)$ resonance, is taken into account rigorously. The pole parameters of the $X(4630)$ are extracted and found to be compatible with the ones of the $X(4660)$ resonance that have been established in the reaction $e^+e^- \to π^+π^-ψ(2S)$. The actual result for the $X(4630)$ is $M = (4652.5\pm 3.4)$ MeV and $Γ= (62.6\pm 5.6)$ MeV. Predictions for the $Λ^+_c$ electromagnetic form factors in the timelike region are presented.

Note on X(3872) production at hadron colliders and its molecular structure

The production of the X(3872) as a hadronic molecule in hadron colliders is clarified. We show that the conclusion of Bignamini et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 103 (2009) 162001, that the production of the X(3872) at high $p_T$ implies a non-molecular structure, does not hold. In particular, using the well understood properties of the deuteron wave function as an example, we identify the relevant scales in the production process.

Connected and Disconnected Contractions in Pion-Pion Scattering

We show that the interplay of chiral effective field theory and lattice QCD can be used in the evaluation of so-called disconnected diagrams, which appear in the study of the isoscalar and isovector channels of pion-pion scattering and have long been a major challenge for the lattice community. By means of partially-quenched chiral perturbation theory, we distinguish and analyze the effects from different types of contraction diagrams to the pion-pion scattering amplitude, including its scattering lengths and the energy-dependence of its imaginary part. Our results may be used to test the current degree of accuracy of lattice calculation in the handling of disconnected diagrams, as well as to set criteria for the future improvement of relevant lattice computational techniques that may play a critical role in the study of other interesting QCD matrix elements.

Effective field theory for triaxially deformed nuclei

Effective field theory (EFT) is generalized to investigate the rotational motion of triaxially deformed even-even nuclei. A Hamiltonian, called the triaxial rotor model (TRM), is obtained up to next-to-leading order (NLO) within the EFT formalism. Its applicability is examined by comparing with a five-dimensional collective Hamiltonian (5DCH) for the description of the energy spectra of the ground state and $γ$ band in Ru isotopes. It is found that by taking into account the NLO corrections, the ground state band in the whole spin region and the $γ$ band in the low spin region are well described. The results presented here indicate that it should be possible to further generalize the EFT to triaxial nuclei with odd mass number.

Triviality of quantum electrodynamics revisited

Quantum electrodynamics is considered to be a trivial theory. This is based on a number of evidences, both numerical and analytical. One of the strong indications for triviality of QED is the existence of the Landau pole for the running coupling. We show that by treating QED as the leading order approximation of an effective field theory and including the next-to-leading order corrections, the Landau pole is removed. Therefore, we conclude that the conjecture, that for reasons of self-consistency, QED needs to be trivial is a mere artefact of the leading order approximation to the corresponding effective field theory.

Wilsonian renormalization group versus subtractive renormalization in effective field theories for nucleon--nucleon scattering

We compare the subtractive renormalization and the Wilsonian renormalization group approaches in the context of an effective field theory for the two-nucleon system. Based on an exactly solvable model of contact interactions, we observe that the standard Wilsonian renormalization group approach with a single cutoff parameter does not cover the whole space spanned by the renormalization scale parameters of the subtractive formalism. In particular, renormalization schemes corresponding to Weinberg's power counting in the case of an unnaturally large scattering length are beyond the region covered by the Wilsonian renormalization group approach. In the framework of pionless effective field theory, also extended by the inclusion of a long-range interaction of separable type, we demonstrate that Weinberg's power counting scheme is consistent in the sense that it leads to a systematic order-by-order expansion of the scattering amplitude.

Study of open-charm $0^+$ states in unitarized chiral effective theory with one-loop potentials

Chiral potentials are derived for the interactions between Goldstone bosons and pseudoscalar charmed mesons up to next-to-next-to-leading order in a covariant chiral effective field theory with explicit vector charmed-meson degrees of freedom. Using the extended-on-mass-shell scheme, we demonstrate that the ultraviolet divergences and the so-called power counting breaking terms can be properly absorbed by the low-energy constants of the chiral Lagrangians. We calculate the scattering lengths by unitarizing the one-loop potentials and fit them to the data extracted from lattice QCD. The obtained results are compared to the ones without an explicit contribution of vector charmed mesons given previously. It is found that the difference is negligible for $S$-wave scattering in the threshold region. This validates the use of $D^\ast$-less one-loop potentials in the study of the pertinent scattering lengths. We search for dynamically generated open-charm states with $J^P=0^+$ as poles of the $S$-matrix on various Riemann sheets. The trajectories of those poles for varying pion masses are presented as well.

Generating a resonance-like structure in the reaction $B_c\to B_s ππ$

We investigate the process $B_c^+\to B_s^0π^+π^0$ via $B\bar{K}^*$ rescattering. The kinematic conditions for triangle singularities are perfectly satisfied in the rescattering diagrams. A resonance-like structure around the $B\bar{K}$ threshold, which we denote as $X(5777)$, is predicted to be present in the invariant mass distribution of $B_s^0 π^+$. Because the relative weak $B\bar{K}$ $(I=1)$ interaction does not support the existence of a dynamically generated hadronic molecule, the $X(5777)$ can be identified as a pure kinematical effect due to the triangle singularity. Its observation may help to establish a non-resonance interpretation for some $XYZ$ particles.

New method for a continuous determination of the spin tune in storage rings and implications for precision experiments

A new method to determine the spin tune is described and tested. In an ideal planar magnetic ring, the spin tune - defined as the number of spin precessions per turn - is given by $ν_s = γG$ (gamma is the Lorentz factor, $G$ the magnetic anomaly). For 970 MeV/c deuterons coherently precessing with a frequency of ~120 kHz in the Cooler Synchrotron COSY, the spin tune is deduced from the up-down asymmetry of deuteron carbon scattering. In a time interval of 2.6 s, the spin tune was determined with a precision of the order $10^{-8}$, and to $1 \cdot 10^{-10}$ for a continuous 100 s accelerator cycle. This renders the presented method a new precision tool for accelerator physics: controlling the spin motion of particles to high precision is mandatory, in particular, for the measurement of electric dipole moments of charged particles in a storage ring.
