Elastic pion-nucleon scattering in chiral perturbation theory: A fresh look

Elastic pion-nucleon scattering is analyzed in the framework of chiral perturbation theory up to fourth order within the heavy-baryon expansion and a covariant approach based on an extended on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. We discuss in detail the renormalization of the various low-energy constants and provide explicit expressions for the relevant $β$-functions and the finite subtractions of the power-counting breaking terms within the covariant formulation. To estimate the theoretical uncertainty from the truncation of the chiral expansion, we employ an approach which has been successfully applied in the most recent analysis of the nuclear forces. This allows us to reliably extract the relevant low-energy constants from the available scattering data at low energy. The obtained results provide a clear evidence that the breakdown scale of the chiral expansion for this reaction is related to the $Δ$-resonance. The explicit inclusion of the leading contributions of the $Δ$-isobar is demonstrated to substantially increase the range of applicability of the effective field theory. The resulting predictions for the phase shifts are in an excellent agreement with the ones from the recent Roy-Steiner-equation analysis of pion-nucleon scattering.

Hyperons in nuclear matter from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

Brueckner theory is used to investigate the properties of hyperons in nuclear matter. The hyperon-nucleon interaction is taken from chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order with SU(3) symmetric low-energy constants. Furthermore, the underlying nucleon-nucleon interaction is also derived within chiral effective field theory. We present the single-particle potentials of Lambda and Sigma hyperons in symmetric and asymmetric nuclear matter computed with the continuous choice for intermediate spectra. The results are in good agreement with the empirical information. In particular, our calculation gives a repulsive Sigma-nuclear potential and a weak Lambda-nuclear spin-orbit force.

Leading three-baryon forces from SU(3) chiral effective field theory

Leading three-baryon forces are derived within SU(3) chiral effective field theory. Three classes of irreducible diagrams contribute: three-baryon contact terms, one-meson exchange and two-meson exchange diagrams. We provide the minimal non-relativistic terms of the chiral Lagrangian, that contribute to these diagrams. SU(3) relations are given for the strangeness S=0 and -1 sectors. In the strangeness-zero sector we recover the well-known three-nucleon forces from chiral effective field theory. Explicit expressions for the lambda-nucleon-nucleon chiral potential in isospin space are presented.

Studies of Hadron Structure and Interactions with the $\overline{\bf P}$ANDA Experiment at FAIR

The $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ANDA experiment together with the high quality antiproton beam at HESR will be a powerful tool to address fundamental questions of hadron physics in the charm and multi-strange hadron sector. In connection with the recent data in the hidden charm sector, $\overline{\mbox{P}}$ANDA will be able to deliver decisive contributions to this field, due to the complementarity of the $\overline{p} p$ entrance channel and the capabilities of the combined storage ring and detector system under construction.

Strangeness S=-2 baryon-baryon interaction at next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory

The strangeness $S=-2$ baryon-baryon interaction is studied in chiral effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. The potential at this order consists of contributions from one- and two-pseudoscalar-meson exchange diagrams and from four-baryon contact terms without and with two derivatives. SU(3) flavor symmetry is imposed for constructing the interaction in the $S=-2$ sector. Specifically, the couplings of the pseudoscalar mesons to the baryons are fixed by SU(3) symmetry and, in general, also the contact terms are related via SU(3) symmetry to those determined in a previous study of the $S=-1$ hyperon-nucleon interaction. The explicit SU(3) symmetry breaking due to the physical masses of the pseudoscalar mesons ($π$, $K$, $η$) is taken into account. It is argued that the $ΞN$ interaction has to be relatively weak to be in accordance with available experimental constraints. In particular, the published values and upper bounds for the $Ξ^- p$ elastic and inelastic cross sections apparently rule out a somewhat stronger attractive $ΞN$ force and, specifically, disfavor any near-threshold deuteron-like bound states in that system.

One-loop analysis of the interactions between charmed mesons and Goldstone bosons

We derive the scattering amplitude for Goldstone bosons of chiral symmetry off the pseudoscalar charmed mesons up to leading one-loop order in a covariant chiral effective field theory, using the so-called extended-on-mass-shell renormalization scheme. Then we use unitarized chiral perturbation theory to fit to the available lattice data of the S-wave scattering lengths. The lattice data are well described. However, most of the low-energy constants determined from the fit bear large uncertainties. Lattice simulations in more channels are necessary to pin down these values which can then be used to make predictions in other processes related by chiral and heavy quark symmetries.

New insights into the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ and other charm scalar mesons

Through the scattering of light-pseudoscalar mesons ($π,K,η,η'$) off charmed mesons ($D, D_s$), we study the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ state and other relevant charm scalar mesons in a unitarized chiral effective field theory approach. We investigate the charm scalar meson poles with different strangeness ($S$) and isospin ($I$) quantum numbers as well as their corresponding residues, which provide the coupling strengths of the charm scalar mesons. Both the light-quark mass and $N_C$ dependences of the pole positions of the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ and the poles with $(S,I)=(0,1/2)$ are analyzed in detail in this work. Interestingly we observe quite similar pion mass trajectories for the resonance pole at around 2.1 GeV with $(S,I)=(0,1/2)$ to those of the $f_0(500)$ given in the literature. When increasing the values of $N_C$ we find that a bound state and a virtual state in the $(S,I)=(1,0)$ channel asymmetrically approach the $D K$ threshold for $N_C<6$, and they meet at this threshold at $N_C=6$. When $N_C>6$, the bound and virtual states move into the complex plane on the second Riemann sheet and become a symmetric pair of resonance poles. For large enough values of $N_C$, neither the $D^{*}_{s0}(2317)$ pole nor the poles with $(S,I)=(0,1/2)$ tend to fall down to the real axis, indicating that they do not behave like a standard quark-antiquark meson at large $N_C$.

How to reveal the exotic nature of the P_c(4450)

The LHCb Collaboration announced two pentaquark-like structures in the $J/ψp$ invariant mass distribution. We show that the current information on the narrow structure at 4.45 GeV is compatible with kinematical effects of the rescattering from $χ_{c1} p$ to $J/ψp$: First, it is located exactly at the $χ_{c1} p$ threshold. Second, the mass of the four-star well-established $Λ(1890)$ is such that a leading Landau singularity from a triangle diagram can coincidentally appear at the $χ_{c1} p$ threshold, and third, there is a narrow structure at the $χ_{c1}\,p$ threshold but not at the $χ_{c0} p$ and $χ_{c2} p$ thresholds. In order to check whether that structure corresponds to a real exotic resonance, one has to measure the process $Λ_b^0\to K^-χ_{c1} p$. If the $P_c(4450)$ structure exists in the $χ_{c1} p$ invariant mass distribution as well, then the structure cannot be just a kinematical effect but is a real resonance, otherwise, one cannot conclude the $P_c(4450)$ to be another exotic hadron. In addition, it is also worthwhile to measure the decay $Υ(1S)\to J/ψp \bar p$: a narrow structure at 4.45 GeV but not at the $χ_{c0} p$ and $χ_{c2} p$ thresholds would exclude the possibility of a pure kinematical effect.

Matching pion-nucleon Roy-Steiner equations to chiral perturbation theory

We match the results for the subthreshold parameters of pion-nucleon scattering obtained from a solution of Roy-Steiner equations to chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order, to extract the pertinent low-energy constants including a comprehensive analysis of systematic uncertainties and correlations. We study the convergence of the chiral series by investigating the chiral expansion of threshold parameters up to the same order and discuss the role of the Δ(1232) resonance in this context. Results for the low-energy constants are also presented in the counting scheme usually applied in chiral nuclear effective field theory, where they serve as crucial input to determine the long-range part of the nucleon-nucleon potential as well as three-nucleon forces.

Baryon chiral perturbation theory extended beyond the low-energy region

We consider an extension of the one-nucleon sector of baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond the low-energy region. The applicability of this approach for higher energies is restricted to small scattering angles, i.e. the kinematical region, where the quark structure of hadrons cannot be resolved. The main idea is to re-arrange the low-energy effective Lagrangian according to a new power counting and to exploit the freedom of the choice of the renormalization condition for loop diagrams. We generalize the extended on-mass-shell scheme for the one-nucleon sector of baryon chiral perturbation theory by choosing a sliding scale, that is we expand the physical amplitudes around kinematical points beyond the threshold. This requires the introduction of complex-valued renormalized coupling constants which can be either extracted from experimental data, or calculated using the renormalization group evolution of coupling constants fixed in threshold region.

Ab initio lattice results for Fermi polarons in two dimensions

We investigate the attractive Fermi polaron problem in two dimensions using non-perturbative Monte Carlo simulations. We introduce a new Monte Carlo algorithm called the impurity lattice Monte Carlo method. This algorithm samples the path integral in a computationally efficient manner and has only small sign oscillations for systems with a single impurity. As a benchmark of the method, we calculate the universal polaron energy in three dimensions in the scale-invariant unitarity limit and find agreement with published results. We then present the first fully non-perturbative calculations of the polaron energy in two dimensions and density correlations between the impurity and majority particles in the limit of zero range interactions. We find evidence for a smooth crossover transition from fermionic quasiparticle to molecular state as a function of interaction strength.

Clustering in nuclei from ab initio nuclear lattice simulations

Nuclear Lattice Effective Field Theory is a new many-body approach that is firmly rooted in the symmetries of QCD. In particular, it allows for truly ab initio calculations of nuclear structure and reactions. In this talk, I focus on the emergence of alpha-clustering in nuclei based on this approach. I also discuss various recent achievements, the deficiencies of the chiral forces used at present and the prospects to improve upon these and the calculations of nuclear properties and dynamics.

Testing the $χ_{c1}\, p$ composite nature of the $P_c(4450)$

Making use of a recently proposed formalism, we analyze the composite nature of the $P_c(4450)$ resonance observed by LHCb. We show that the present data suggest that this state is almost entirely made of a $χ_{c1}$ and a proton, due to the close proximity to this threshold. This also suppresses the decay modes into other, lighter channels, in our study represented by $J/Ψp$. We further argue that this is very similar to the case of the scalar meson $f_0(980)$ which is located closely to the $K\bar K$ threshold and has a suppressed decay into the lighter $ππ$ channel.

Cumulants of the QCD topological charge distribution

The distribution of the QCD topological charge can be described by cumulants, with the lowest one being the topological susceptibility. The vacuum energy density in a theta-vacuum is the generating function for these cumulants. In this paper, we derive the vacuum energy density in SU(2) chiral perturbation theory up to next-to-leading order keeping different up and down quark masses, which can be used to calculate any cumulant of the topological charge distribution. We also give the expression for the case of SU(N) with degenerate quark masses. In this case, all cumulants depend on the same linear combination of low-energy constants and chiral logarithm, and thus there are sum rules between the N-flavor quark condensate and the cumulants free of next-to-leading order corrections.

High-precision determination of the pion-nucleon $σ$-term from Roy-Steiner equations

We present a determination of the pion-nucleon ($πN$) $σ$-term $σ_{πN}$ based on the Cheng-Dashen low-energy theorem (LET), taking advantage of the recent high-precision data from pionic atoms to pin down the $πN$ scattering lengths as well as of constraints from analyticity, unitarity, and crossing symmetry in the form of Roy-Steiner equations to perform the extrapolation to the Cheng-Dashen point in a reliable manner. With isospin-violating corrections included both in the scattering lengths and the LET, we obtain $σ_{πN}=(59.1\pm 1.9\pm 3.0)$ MeV $=(59.1\pm 3.5)$ MeV, where the first error refers to uncertainties in the $πN$ amplitude and the second to the LET. Consequences for the scalar nucleon couplings relevant for the direct detection of dark matter are discussed.

Nuclear Lattice Simulations using Symmetry-Sign Extrapolation

Projection Monte Carlo calculations of lattice Chiral Effective Field Theory suffer from sign oscillations to a varying degree dependent on the number of protons and neutrons. Hence, such studies have hitherto been concentrated on nuclei with equal numbers of protons and neutrons, and especially on the alpha nuclei where the sign oscillations are smallest. Here, we introduce the "symmetry-sign extrapolation" method, which allows us to use the approximate Wigner SU(4) symmetry of the nuclear interaction to systematically extend the Projection Monte Carlo calculations to nuclear systems where the sign problem is severe. We benchmark this method by calculating the ground-state energies of the $^{12}$C, $^6$He and $^6$Be nuclei, and discuss its potential for studies of neutron-rich halo nuclei and asymmetric nuclear matter.

Origin of the structures observed in $e^+e^-$ annihilation into multipion states around the $\bar pp$ threshold

We analyze the origin of the structures observed in the reactions $e^+e^-\to 3(π^+π^-)$, $2(π^+π^-π^0)$, $ωπ^+π^-π^0$, and $e^+e^-\to 2(π^+π^-)π^0$ around the antiproton-proton ($\bar pp$) threshold. We calculate the contribution of the two-step process $e^+e^-\to \bar NN \to$ multipions to the total reaction amplitude. The amplitude for $e^+e^-\to \bar NN$ is constrained from near-threshold data on the $e^+e^-\to \bar pp$ cross section and the one for $\bar NN \to$ multipions can be likewise fixed from available experimental information, for all those $5 π$ and $6π$ states. The resulting amplitude for $e^+e^-\to$ multipions turns out to be large enough to play a role for the considered $e^+e^-$ annihilation channels and, in three of the four reactions, even allows us to reproduce the data quantitatively near the $\bar NN$ threshold. The structures seen in the experiments emerges then as a threshold effect due to the opening of the $\bar NN$ channel.
