Updated dispersion-theoretical analysis of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors

In the light of the new data on the various neutron and proton electromagnetic form factors taken in recent years, we update the dispersion-theoretical analysis of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors from the mid-nineties. The parametrization of the spectral functions includes constraints from unitarity, perturbative QCD, and recent measurements of the neutron charge radius. We obtain a good description of most modern form factor data, with the exception of the Jefferson Lab data on G_E^p/G_M^p in the four-momentum transfer range Q^2=3...6 GeV^2. For the magnetic radii of the proton and the neutron we find r_M^p = 0.857 fm and r_M^n = 0.879 fm, which is consistent with the recent determinations using continued fraction expansions.

On the pion cloud of the nucleon

We evaluate the two--pion contribution to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors by use of dispersion analysis and chiral perturbation theory. After subtraction of the rho--meson component, we calculate the distributions of charge and magnetization in coordinate space, which can be interpreted as the effects of the pion cloud. We find that the charge distribution of this pion cloud effect peaks at distances of about 0.3 fm. Furthermore, we calculate the contribution of the pion cloud to the isovector charges and radii of the nucleon.

Chiral Dynamics: Theory and Experiment (CD2003)

These are the proceedings of the fourth international workshop on "Chiral Dynamics: Theory and Experiment" which was held at the University of Bonn, September 8-13, 2003. The workshop concentrated on the various experimental andtheoretical aspects of chiral dynamics, including for the first time in this series detailed discussions of lattice gauge theory. It consisted of an introductory lecture, plenary talks, working group talks and working group summaries. Included is a short contribution per talk.

Chiral dynamics with strange quarks

In the first part of the talk, I review what we know (or rather do not know) about the structure of the QCD vacuum in the presence of strange quarks. Chiral perturbation theory allows to study reactions of pions and kaons and to further sharpen our understanding of symmetry violation in QCD. I review recent progress on the description of pion-kaon scattering, in particular concerning isospin violation and the extraction of threshold and resonance parameters from Roy-Steiner equations. In the third part, it is shown how a unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory leads to novel insight into the structure of the Lambda(1405).

Improving the convergence of the chiral expansion for nuclear forces II: low phases and the deuteron

Recently we have proposed a new cut-off scheme for pion loop integrals in the two-pion exchange potential. This method allows for a consistent implementation of constraints from pion-nucleon scattering and has been successfully applied to peripheral nucleon-nucleon partial waves. We now consider low partial waves in the non-perturbative regime, where the regularized Lippmann-Schwinger equation has to be solved in order to generate the bound and scattering states. We observe an improved description of most of the phase shifts when going from next-to- to next-to-next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We also find a good description of the deuteron properties. In addition, the new cut-off scheme allows to avoid the presence of unphysical deeply bound states. We discuss the cut-off dependence of the four-nucleon low-energy constants and show that their numerical values can be understood in terms of resonance saturation. This connects the effective field theory approach to boson exchange phenomenology.

Cutoff schemes in chiral perturbation theory and the quark mass expansion of the nucleon mass

We discuss the use of cutoff methods in chiral perturbation theory. We develop a cutoff scheme based on the operator structure of the effective field theory that allows to suppress high momentum contributions in Goldstone boson loop integrals and by construction is free of the problems traditional cutoff schemes have with gauge invariance or chiral symmetries. As an example, we discuss the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass. Contrary to other claims in the literature we show that the mass of a nucleon in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory has a well behaved chiral expansion up to effective Goldstone boson masses of 400 MeV when one utilizes standard dimensional regularization techniques. With the help of the here developed cutoff scheme we can demonstrate a well-behaved chiral expansion for the nucleon mass up to 600 MeV of effective Goldstone Boson masses. We also discuss in detail the prize, in numbers of additional short distance operators involved, that has to be paid for this extended range of applicability of chiral perturbation theory with cutoff regularization, which is usually not paid attention to. We also compare the fourth order result for the chiral expansion of the nucleon mass with lattice results and draw some conclusions about chiral extrapolations based on such type of representation.

Improving the convergence of the chiral expansion for nuclear forces I: Peripheral phases

We study the two-pion exchange potential at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory. We propose a new cut-off scheme for the pion loop integrals based on spectral function regularization. We show that this method allows for a consistent implementation of constraints from pion-nucleon scattering. It leads to a much improved description of the partial waves with angular momentum l \geq 2 as compared to the calculation utilizing dimensional regularization.

Infrared regularization with spin-3/2 fields

We present a Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory including spin-3/2 fields. Particular attention is paid to the projection on the spin-3/2 components of the delta fields. We also discuss the nucleon mass and the pion-nucleon sigma term.

Spin structure of the nucleon at low energies

The spin structure of the nucleon is analyzed in the framework of a Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. The structure functions of doubly virtual Compton scattering are calculated to one-loop accuracy (fourth order in the chiral expansion). We discuss the generalization of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, the Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule and moments of these. We give predictions for the forward and the longitudinal-transverse spin polarizabilities of the proton and the neutron at zero and finite photon virtuality. A detailed comparison to results obtained in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is also given.

Electromagnetic form factors of bound nucleons revisited

We investigate the possible modifications of the nucleons' electromagnetic form factors in the framework of a modified Skyrme model allowing for nucleon deformation and using realistic nuclear mass distributions. We show that such effects are small in light nuclei.

Novel analysis of chiral loop effects in the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule

We study the chiral loop corrections to the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule of the nucleon for finite photon virtuality in the framework of a Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. We perform a complete one-loop calculation and obtain significant differences to previously found results based on the heavy baryon approach for the proton and neutron spin-dependent forward Compton amplitudes.

Quasiparticle Properties in Effective Field Theory

The quasiparticle concept is an important tool for the description of many-body systems. We study the quasiparticle properties for dilute Fermi systems with short-ranged, repulsive interactions using effective field theory. We calculate the proper self-energy contributions at order (K_f/Lambda)^3, where Lambda is the short-distance scale that sets the size of the effective range parameters and K_f the Fermi momentum. The quasiparticle energy, width, and effective mass to order O(K_f/Lambda)^3 are derived from the calculated self-energy.

Three-Nucleon Forces from Chiral Effective Field Theory

We perform the first complete analysis of nd scattering at next-to-next-to-leading order in chiral effective field theory including the corresponding three-nucleon force and extending our previous work, where only the two-nucleon interaction has been taken into account. The three-nucleon force appears first at this order in the chiral expansion and depends on two unknown parameters. These two parameters are determined from the triton binding energy and the nd doublet scattering length. We find an improved description of various scattering observables in relation to the next-to-leading order results especially at moderate energies (E_lab = 65 MeV). It is demonstrated that the long-standing A_y-problem in nd elastic scattering is still not solved by the leading 3NF, although some visible improvement is observed. We discuss possibilities of solving this puzzle. The predicted binding energy for the alpha-particle agrees with the empirical value.

Nuclear forces in the chiral limit

We investigate the behaviour of the nuclear forces as a function of the light quark masses (or, equivalently, pion mass) in the framework of chiral effective field theory at next-to-leading order. The nucleon-nucleon force is described in terms of one- and two-pion exchange and local short distance operators, which depend explicitly and implicitly on the quark masses. The pion propagator becomes Coulomb-like in the chiral limit and thus one has significant scattering in all partial waves. The pion-nucleon coupling depends implicitly on the quark masses and we find that it becomes stronger in the chiral limit. There is a further quark mass dependence in the S-wave four--nucleon couplings, which can be estimated by means of dimensional analysis. We find that nuclear physics in the chiral limit becomes natural. There are no new bound states, the deuteron binding energy is B_D^{CL} = 9.6 +/- 1.9^+1.8_-1.0 MeV, and the S-wave scattering lengths take values of a few fm, a_{CL} (^1S_0) = -4.1 +/- 1.6^+0.0_-0.4 fm and a_{CL} (^3S_1) = 1.5 +/- 0.4^+0.2_-0.3 fm. We also discuss the extrapolation to larger pion masses pertinent for the extraction of these quantities from lattice simulations.

Near threshold neutral pion electroproduction on deuterium in chiral perturbation theory

Near threshold neutral pion electroproduction on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory at next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion. We develop the multipole decomposition for pion production off spin-1 particles appropriate for the threshold region. The existing data at photon virtuality k^2 = -0.1 GeV^2 can be described satisfactorily. Furthermore, the prediction for the S-wave multipole E_d at the photon point is in good agreement with the data.
