The pion charge radius from charged pion electroproduction

We analyze a low-energy theorem of threshold pion electroproduction which allows one to determine the charge radius of the pion. We show that at the same order where the radius appears, pion loops induce a correction to the momentum dependence of the longitudinal dipole amplitude $L_{0+}^{(-)}$. This model-independent correction amounts to an increase of the pion charge radius squared from the electroproduction data by about 0.26~fm$^2$. It sheds light on the apparent discrepancy between the recent determination of the pion radius from electroproduction data and the one based on pion-electron scattering.

Complete one-loop analysis of the nucleon's spin polarizabilities

We present a complete one-loop analysis of the four nucleon spin polarizabilities in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The first non-vanishing contributions to the isovector and first corrections to the isoscalar spin polarizabilities are calculated. No unknown parameters enter these predictions. We compare our results to various dispersive analyses. We also discuss the convergence of the chiral expansion and the role of the delta isobar.

Chiral unitary meson-baryon dynamics in the presence of resonances: Elastic pion-nucleon scattering

We develop a novel approach to chiral meson-baryon dynamics incorporating unitarity constraints and explicit resonance fields. It is based on the most general structure of any pion-nucleon partial wave amplitude neglecting the unphysical cuts as derived from the N/D method. This amplitude is then matched to the one-loop heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory result at third order and to tree level exchanges of baryon- and meson states in the s,t and u channels. This generates the left-hand cuts. The unitarization procedure does not involve form factors or regulator functions. The resonance parameters are determined from fits to the S- and P-wave pion-nucleon partial wave amplitudes for energies up to 1.3 GeV. In particular, the $Δ(1232)$ is accurately reproduced whereas scalar and vector meson couplings are less precisely pinned down. We also obtain a satisfactory description of the $π$N threshold parameters. Further extensions of this method to coupled channels and the three-flavor case are briefly discussed.

Nuclear forces from chiral Lagrangians using the method of unitary transformation II: The two-nucleon system

We employ the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential derived in ref.[1] to study bound and scattering states in the two-nucleon system. At next-to-leading order, this potential is the sum of renormalized one-pion and two-pion exchange and contact interactions. At next-to-next-to-leading order, we have additional chiral two-pion exchange with low-energy constants determined from pion-nucleon scattering. Alternatively, we consider the Δ(1232) as an explicit degree of freedom in the effective field theory. The nine parameters related to the contact interactions can be determined by a fit to the np S- and P-waves and the mixing parameter ε_1 for laboratory energies below 100 MeV. The predicted phase shifts and mixing parameters for higher energies and higher angular momenta are mostly well described for energies below 300 MeV. The S-waves are described as precisely as in modern phenomenological potentials. We find a good description of the deuteron properties.

Effective field theory for the two-nucleon system

I discuss the dynamics of the two-nucleon system as obtained from a chiral nucleon-nucleon potential. This potential is based on a modified Weinberg power counting and contains chiral one- and two-pion exchange as well as four-nucleon contact interactions. The description of the S-waves is very precise. Higher partial waves are also well reproduced. We also find a good description of most of the deuteron properties.

Baryon form factors: Model-independent results

Baryon form factors can be analyzed in a largely model-independent fashion in terms of two complementary approaches. These are chiral perturbation theory and dispersion relations. I review the status of dispersive calculations of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors in the light of new data. Then, I present the leading one-loop chiral perturbation theory analysis of the hyperon and the strange nucleon form factors. Open problems and challenges are also discussed.

Pion-nucleon scattering inside the Mandelstam triangle

We study the third order pion-nucleon scattering amplitude obtained from heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory inside the Mandelstam triangle. We reconstruct the pion-nucleon amplitude in the unphysical region by use of dispersion relations and determine the pertinent low-energy constants by a fit to this amplitude. A detailed comparison with values obtained from phase shift analysis is given. Our analysis leads to a pion-nucleon sigma-term of sigma(0) = 40 MeV based on the Karlsruhe partial wave analysis. We have repeated the same procedure using the latest solution of the VPI group and find a much larger value for sigma(0).

One-loop analysis of the reaction pi N to pi pi N

Single pion production off nucleons is studied in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to third order in the chiral expansion. Using total and some older differential cross section data to pin down the low-energy constants, most of the recent differential cross sections and angular correlation functions can be described as well as total cross sections at higher energies. We show that the contributions from the one loop graphs are essentially negligible and that the dominant terms at second and third order are related to pion-nucleon scattering graphs with one pion added. We also discuss the possibility of extracting the pion-pion S-wave scattering lengths from the unpolarized data.

Strange chiral nucleon form factors

We investigate the strange electric and magnetic form factors of the nucleon in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to third order in the chiral expansion. All counterterms can be fixed from data. In particular, the two unknown singlet couplings can be deduced from the parity-violating electron scattering experiments performed by the SAMPLE and the HAPPEX collaborations. Within the given uncertainties, our analysis leads to a small and positive electric strangeness radius, $ = (0.05 \pm 0.09) fm^2$. We also deduce the consequences for the upcoming MAMI A4 experiment.

Isospin violation in the two-nucleon system

I discuss isospin violation in an effective field theory appraoch of the nucleon-nucleon interaction. The observed leading order charge independence breaking is explained in terms of one-pion exchange together with a four-nucleon contact term. A general classification scheme of corrections to this leading order results is presented and an explanation is offered why charge-dependent pion-nucleon coupling constants can not play a role in the observed isospin violation in the NN scattering lengths. Charge symmetry breaking, the size of $πγ$-exchange graphs and the pionless theory are also discussed.

Virtual photons in baryon chiral perturbation theory

We construct the general Lagrangian for relativistic and heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory with virtual photons to fourth order. We work out the electromagnetic and strong isospin violating contributions to the nucleon self-energy, the nucleon mass and the scalar form factor of the nucleon. Electromagnetic effects for the shift to the Cheng-Dashen point can be as large as 2 MeV. We also discuss the corrections to Weinberg's prediction for the scattering length difference $a(π^0 p) - a(π^0 n)$ and show that they are small.

Baryon form factors

We calculate the form factors of the baryon octet in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. The calculated charge radius of the $Σ^-$ is in agreement with recent measurements from CERN and Fermilab. We show that kaon loop effects can play a significant role in the neutron electric form factor. Furthermore. we derive generalized Caldi-Pagels relations between various charge radii which are free of chiral loop effects.

Charge independence breaking and charge symmetry breaking in the nucleon-nucleon interaction from effective field theory

We discuss charge symmetry and charge independence breaking in an effective field theory approach for few-nucleon systems. We systematically introduce strong isospin-violating and electromagnetic operators in the theory. The charge dependence observed in the nucleon-nucleon scattering lengths is due to one-pion exchange and one electromagnetic four-nucleon contact term. This gives a parameter free expression for the charge dependence of the corresponding effective ranges, which is in agreement with the rather small and uncertain empirical determinations. We also compare the low energy phase shifts of the $nn$ and the $np$ system.

Novel approach to pion and eta production in proton-proton collisions near threshold

We evaluate the threshold matrix-element for the reaction $pp \to ppπ^0$ in a fully relativistic Feynman diagrammatic approach. We employ a simple effective range approximation to take care of the S-wave $pp$ final-state interaction. The experimental value for the threshold amplitude ${\cal A} = (2.7 - i 0.3)$ fm$^4$ can be reproduced by contributions from tree level chiral (long-range) pion exchange and short-range effects related to vector meson exchanges, with $ω$ exchange giving the largest individual contribution. Pion loop effects appear to be small. We stress that the commonly used heavy baryon formalism is not applicable in the NN-system above the pion production threshold due to the large external momentum, $|\vec p | \simeq \sqrt {Mm_π}$, with $M$ and $m_π$ the nucleon and the pion mass, respectively. We furthermore investigate the reaction $pp\to p n π^+$ near threshold within the same approach. We extract from the data the triplet threshold amplitude as ${\cal B}= (2.8 -i 1.5)$ fm$^4$. Its real part can be well understood from (relativistic) tree level meson-exchange diagrams. In addition, we investigate the process $pp \to pp η$ near threshold. We use a simple factorization ansatz for the $ppη$ final-state interaction and extract from the data the modulus of the threshold amplitude, $|{\cal C}| = 1.32 $fm$^4$. With $g_{ηN}=5.3$, this value can be reproduced by (relativistic) tree level meson-exchange diagrams and $η$-rescattering, whose strength is fixed by the $ηN$ scattering length. We also comment on the recent near threshold data for $η'$-production.

On the size of isospin violation in low-energy pion-nucleon scattering

We present an analysis of isospin-breaking effects in threshold pion-nucleon scattering due to the light quark mass difference and the dominant virtual photon effects. We discuss the deviation from various relations, which are exact in the isospin limit. The size of the isospin-violating effects in the relations involving the isovector $πN$ amplitudes is typically of the order of one percent. We also find a new remarkably large effect $(\sim 40%)$ in an isoscalar triangle relation connecting the charged and neutral pion scattering off protons.

Effective theory for the two-nucleon system

We apply the method of unitary transformations to a model two-nucleon potential and construct from it an effective potential in a subspace of momenta below a given cut-off $Λ$. The S-matrices in the full space and in the subspace are shown to be identical. We solve numerically the Schrödinger equation in the small momentum space and recover exactly the bound and scattering states of the full theory. We then expand the heavy repulsive meson exchange of the effective potential in a series of local contact terms and discuss the question of naturalness of the corresponding coupling constants. Using our exact effective theory we address further issues related to the chiral perturbation theory approach of the two-nucleon system. The coordinate space representation of the effective potential is also considered.
