Virtual photons in SU(2) chiral perturbation theory and electromagnetic corrections to $ππ$ scattering

We construct the generating functional of two flavor chiral perturbation theory including the effects of virtual photons in the one loop approximation. As an application, we calculate the electromagnetic corrections to the elastic $ππ$ scattering amplitude, in particular to its S--wave threshold parameters. Numerical estimates are given for the reaction $π^0 π^0 \to π^0 π^0$. These electromagnetic effects are found to be smaller than the hadronic two-loop corrections for the scattering length $a_0$. The effective range $b_0$ increases by 36% due to the unitary cusp.

Hadron Structure in the Non-Perturbative Regime of QCD: Isospin Symmetry and its Violation

I discuss recent progress made in calculating electromagnetic corrections in the framework of the effective field theory of QCD. In the case of elastic pion-pion scattering, strong interaction predictions have been worked out to two loop accuracy. I present first results for the electromagnetic corrections in the case of neutral pions. Here, the only sizeable effect comes from the charged to neutral pion mass difference. In the presence of nucleons, isospin violation can be measured in threshold pion photoproduction. I review the present status of the theoretical predictions and the experimental data. I argue that a deeper understanding of isospin violation based on a more precise study of such reactions can be achieved.

Quark-antiquark resonances in the NJL model

The problem of the $ρ$ meson resonance solution in the extended NJL model is studied. It has been shown previously that the solution for the $ρ$ meson changes smoothly from a bound state to a "virtual state" when the vector channel attraction becomes too weak to support bound state solutions. We have found that together with these solutions a separate resonance branch appears which is not connected smoothly with the bound state solutions. At small values of constituent quark mass, $m\sim 200$ MeV, it corresponds to the physical vector meson resonance solution in the quark-continuum region. The $a_1$ and $σ$ resonances are also discussed.

Baryon magnetic moments in chiral perturbation theory

We consider the chiral expansion of the octet baryon magnetic moments in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory including all terms which are of order $q^4$. These terms are formally of quadratic order in the quark masses. We show that despite the large non-analytic quark mass corrections to the Coleman-Glashow relations at order $q^3$, including all analytic and non-analytic corrections at order $q^4$, which in total are of moderate size, allows for a fit to the measured magnetic moments due to the appearance of counter terms with free coupling constants of natural size. In this scheme, the $ΛΣ^0$ transition moment is predicted to be $μ_{ΛΣ^0} = (1.42 \pm 0.01) μ_N$.

The reaction $πN \to ππN$ above threshold in chiral perturbation theory

Single pion production off nucleons is studied in the framework of relativistic baryon chiral perturbation theory at tree level with the inclusion of the terms from the dimension two effective pion-nucleon Lagrangian. The five appearing low-energy constants are fixed from pion-nucleon scattering data. Despite the simplicity of the approach, most of the existing data for total and differential cross sections as well as for the angular correlation functions for incoming pion kinetic energies up to 400 MeV can be satisfactorily described.

Neutral pion photoproduction on deuterium in baryon chiral perturbation theory to order q^4

Threshold neutral pion photoproduction on the deuteron is studied in the framework of baryon chiral perturbation theory beyond next-to--leading order in the chiral expansion. To fourth order in small momenta, the amplitude is finite and a sum of two- and three-body interactions with no undetermined parameters. With accurate theoretical and experimental input from the single nucleon sector for the proton amplitude, we investigate the sensitivity of the threshold cross section to the elementary $γn \to π^0 n$ amplitude. A precise measurement of the threshold cross section for $γd \to π^0 d$ is called for.

Aspects of chiral pion-nucleon physics

The next-to-leading order chiral pion-nucleon Lagrangian contains seven finite low-energy constants. Two can be fixed from the nucleon anomalous magnetic moments and another one from the quark mass contribution to the neutron-proton mass splitting. We find a set of nine observables, which to one loop order do only depend on the remaining four dimension two couplings. These are then determined from a best fit. We also show that their values can be understood in terms of resonance exchange related to $Δ$ excitation as well as vector and scalar meson exchange. In particular, we discuss the role of the fictitious scalar-isoscalar meson. We also investigate the chiral expansion of the two P-wave scattering volumes $P_1^-$ and $P_2^+$ as well as the isovector S-wave effective range parameter $b^-$. The one-loop calculation is in good agreement with the data. The difference $P_1^- - P_2^+$ signals chiral loop effects in the $πN$ P-waves. The calculated D- and F-wave threshold parameters compare well with the empirical values.

Strange vector currents and the OZI-rule

We investigate the role of correlated $πρ$ exchange in the extraction of matrix elements of the strange vector current in the proton. We show that a realistic isoscalar spectral function including this effect leads to sizeably reduced strange vector form factors based on the dispersion--theoretical analysis of the nucleons' electromagnetic form factors.

Nucleon form factors: From the space-like to the time-like region

I discuss how dispersion relations can be used to analyse the nucleon electromagnetic form factors, with particular emphasis on the constraints from unitarity and pQCD. Results for nucleon radii, vector-meson couplings, the onset of pQCD and bounds on the strangeness form factors are presented. The em form factors in the time-like region reveal some interesting physics which is not yet understood in full detail. The need for a better data basis at low, intermediate and large momentum transfer and also in the time-like region is stressed.

The role of massive states in chiral perturbation theory

I review some basic facts about the chiral limit of QCD. This allows to formulate an effective field theory below the chiral symmetry breaking scale, chiral perturbation theory (CHPT). I show that for threshold reactions, the spectrum of QCD is most economically encoded in a set of coupling constants of operators of higher chiral dimension. A consistent scheme to incorporate the $Δ(1232)$ is also discussed and some examples are given. It is stressed that more precise low--energy data are needed to further test and sharpen the resonance saturation hypothesis in the presence of baryons.

Threshold kaon photo- and electroproduction in SU(3) baryon chiral perturbation theory

We calculate the processes $γp \to K^0 Σ^+ , K^+ Σ^0, K^+ Λ$ in three flavor heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory to one loop. Some low--energy constants are fixed from single baryon properties while others are estimated by means of resonance saturation. The total cross sections are comparable with the few existing data points in the threshold region. The angular dependences of the recoil polarization of the $Λ$ and $Σ^0$ show most features of the ones measured at ELSA. We also predict the isovector charge radius of the $Σ^+$, $< r^2_V >_{Σ^+} = (0.30 \pm 0.03) fm^2$.

Chiral expansion of baryon masses and $σ$-terms

We analyze the octet baryon masses and the pion/kaon--nucleon $σ$--terms in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We include {\it all} terms up-to-and-including quadratic order in the light quark masses, $m_q$. We develop a consistent scheme to estimate low--energy constants related to scalar--isoscalar operators in the framework of resonance exchange involving one--loop graphs. The pertinent low--energy constants can only be estimated up to some finite coefficients. Including contributions from loop graphs with intermediate spin--3/2 decuplet and spin--1/2 octet states and from tree graphs including scalar mesons, we use the octet baryon masses and the pion--nucleon $σ$--term to fix all but one of these coefficients. Physical results are insensitive to this remaining parameter. It is also demonstrated that two--loop corrections only modify some of the subleading low--energy constants. We find for the baryon mass in the chiral limit, $m_0 = 770 \pm 110$ MeV. While the corrections of order $m_q^2$ are small for the nucleon, they are still sizeable for the $Λ$, the $Σ$ and the $Ξ$. Therefore a definitive statement about the convergence of three--flavor baryon chiral perturbation can not yet be made. The strangeness content of the nucleon is $y = 0.21 \pm 0.20$. We also estimate the kaon--nucleon $σ$--terms and some two--loops contributions to the nucleon mass.

Nucleon electroweak form factors: Analysis of their spectral functions

We investigate the imaginary parts of the nucleon electromagnetic and axial form factors close to threshold in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. For the isovector electromagnetic form factors, we recover the well known strong enhancement near threshold. For the isoscalar ones, we show that there is no visible enhancement due to the three--pion continuum. This justifies the use of vector meson poles only in dispersion--theoretical calculations. We also calculate the imaginary part of the nucleon isovector axial form factor and show that it is small in the threshold region.

On the analysis of the pion--nucleon $σ$--term: The size of the remainder at the Cheng--Dashen point

We calculate the one--loop contributions of order $M_π^4$ to the difference $Δ_R$ between the on--shell pion--nucleon scattering amplitude $\bar{D}^+(0,2M_π^2)$ at the Cheng--Dashen point $ν=0$, $t=2M_π^2$ and the scalar form factor $σ(2M_π^2)$ in the framework of heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory. We proof that to this order $Δ_R$ contains $no$ chiral logarithms and therefore it vanishes simply as $M_π^4$ in the chiral limit. Numerically, we find as an upper limit $Δ_R \simeq 2\,$MeV.

Dispersion-theoretical analysis of the nucleon electromagnetic form factors: Inclusion of time-like data

We update a recent dispersion--theoretical fit to the nucleon electromagnetic form factors by including the existing data in the time--like region. We show that while the time--like data for the proton can be described consistently with the existing world space--like data, this is not the case for the neutron. Another measurement of the process $e^+ e^- \to \bar n n$ is called for. We furthermore sharpen the previous estimate of the separation between the perturbative and the non--perturbative regime, which is characterized by a scale parameter $Λ^2 \simeq 10\,$GeV$^2$.

Double neutral pion photoproduction at threshold

We consider the chiral expansion of the threshold amplitude for the reaction $γp \to π^0 π^0 p$ to order ${\cal O}(M_π^2)$. We substantiate a claim that this photoproduction channel is significantly enhanced close to threshold due to pion loops. A precise measurement of the corresponding cross sections is called for which allows to test chiral perturbation theory.
