Extracting the low-energy constant $L_0^r$ at three flavors from pion-kaon scattering

Based on our analysis of the contributions from the connected and disconnected contraction diagrams to the pion-kaon scattering amplitude, we provide the first determination of the only free low-energy constant at $\mathcal{O}(p^4)$, known as $L_0^r$, in SU$(4|1)$ Partially-Quenched Chiral Perturbation Theory using the data from the Extended Twisted Mass Collaboration, $L_0^r(μ=M_ρ) = 0.77(20)(25)(7)(7)(2)\cdot 10^{-3}$. The theory uncertainties originate from the unphysical scattering length, the physical low-energy constants, the higher-oder chiral corrections, the (lattice) meson masses and the pion decay constant, respectively

New insights into four-boson renormalization group limit cycles

Using machine learning techniques, we verify that the emergence of renormalization group limit cycles beyond the unitary limit is transferred from the three-boson subsystems to the whole four-boson system. Focussing on four identical bosons, we first generate populations of synthetic singular potentials within the latent space of a boosted ensemble of variational autoencoders. After introducing the limit cycle loss for measuring the deviation of a given renormalization group flow from limit cycle behavior, we minimize it by applying an elitist genetic algorithm to the generated populations. The fittest potentials are observed to accumulate around the inverse-square potential, which we prove to generate limit cycles for four bosons and which is already known to produce limit cycles in the three-boson system. This also indicates that a four-body term does not enter low-energy observables at leading order, since we do not observe any additional scale to emerge.

Prediction of five-flavored pentaquarks

We analyze the possibility of the existence of a fully exotic pentaquark state $udsc\bar{b}$, which is made from the five different flavors participarting in the strong interactions. We investigate the coupled channel effects of the $B^{(*)} Ξ_c-B^{(*)} Ξ_c^\prime$ system through $t$-channel vector meson exchange to search for such states. A $B Ξ_c$ and a $B Ξ_c^\prime$ bound state are found to have binding energies of about $10-30$~MeV with $B_sΛ_c$ and $B_cΛ$ being the possible decay channels. Similarly, a bound state is formed in the $B^* Ξ_c$ and $B^* Ξ_c^\prime$ channels, respectively. These states could be searched for through the $pp\to B_cΛX$ or $pp\to B_s^{(*)}Λ_c X$ processes by the LHCb collaboration.

Constraints on the Lambda-neutron interaction from charge-symmetry breaking of A=4 hypernuclei

We include the leading charge symmetry breaking contributions into the hyperon-nucleon interactions derived within chiral effective field theory up to next-to-leading order. Two low energy constants are determined using the experimentally known differences of Lambda separation energies of 4-Lambda-He and 4-Lambda-H. This allows one to predict the Lambda-neutron scattering lengths for the first time based on data. Various sources of uncertainty are discussed.

Pion axioproduction: The Delta resonance contribution

The process of pion axioproduction, $aN\toπN$, with an intermediate $Δ$ resonance is analyzed using baryon chiral parturbation theory. The $Δ$ resonance is included in two ways: First, deriving the $aΔN$-vertices, the axion is brought into contact with the resonance, and, second, taking the results of $πN$ elastic scattering including the $Δ$, it is implicitly included in the form of a pion rescattering diagram. As a result, the partial wave cross section of axion-nucleon scattering shows an enhancement in the energy region around the $Δ$ resonance. Because of the isospin breaking, the enhancement is not as pronounced as previously anticipated. However, since the isospin breaking here is much milder than that for usual hadronic processes, novel axion search experiments might still exploit this effect.

Differential Cross Section Predictions for PRad-II from Dispersion Theory

We predict the differential cross sections for $e^-p$ and $e^+p$ elastic scattering in the PRad-\Rom{2} energy region. The prediction is based on form factors obtained in our previous high-precision analysis of space- and time-like data from dispersion theory and different sets of two-photon exchange corrections. We investigate the sensitivity of the cross sections to two-photon exchange effects and find that the differences between model calculations and phenomenological extractions of the two-photon corrections can not be resolved if the uncertainty in the form factors is taken into account.

Radiative corrections to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers

We systematically calculate the radiative corrections of order $α/π$ to elastic muon-proton scattering at low momentum transfers. These include vacuum polarization, photon-loop form factors of the muon and the proton, two-photon exchange corrections and soft photon radiation. In particular, we discuss these corrections for the kinematics of the upcomimg AMBER experiment with a $100\,$GeV muon beam energy. It is found that for the ratio to the Born cross section, only the minor terms from the photon-loop form factors of the proton and two-photon exchange depend on the proton structure predetermined by the strong interactions. Since a prominent role among the radiative corrections is played by soft photon radiation, the calculation of the bremsstrahlung process $μp \toμp γ$ should be extended beyond the soft photon approximation and tailored to the specific experimental conditions.

Alpha-alpha scattering in the Multiverse

We investigate the phase shifts of low-energy alpha-alpha scattering under variations of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model, namely the light quark mass, the electromagnetic fine-structure constant as well as the QCD theta-angle. As a first step, we recalculate alpha-alpha scattering in our Universe utilizing various improvements in the adiabatic projection method, which leads to an improved, parameter-free prediction of the S- and D-wave phase shifts for laboratory energies below 10 MeV. We find that positive shifts in the pion mass have a small effect on the S-wave phase shift, whereas lowering the pion mass adds some repulsion in the two-alpha system. The effect on the D-wave phase shift turns out to be more pronounced as signaled by the D-wave resonance parameters. Variations of the fine-structure constant have almost no effect on the low-energy alpha-alpha phase shifts. We further show that up-to-and-including next-to-leading order in the chiral expansion, variations of these phase shifts with respect to the QCD theta-angle can be expressed in terms of the theta-dependent pion mass.

Update on $|V_{us}|$ and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ from semileptonic kaon and pion decays

We discuss the recent progress in the study of semileptonic kaon and pion decays, including new experimental results, improved electroweak radiative corrections, form factor calculations and isospin-breaking effects. As a result, we obtain $|V_{us}|=0.22309(40)(39)(3)$ from kaon semileptonic decays and $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|=0.22908(66)(41)(40)(2)(1)$ from the ratio between the kaon and pion semileptonic decay rates. We report an apparent violation of the top-row Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix unitarity at a $3.2\sim 5.6σ$ level, and a discrepancy at a $2.2σ$ level between the value of $|V_{us}/V_{ud}|$ determined from the vector and axial charged weak interactions. Prospects for future improvements in those comparative precision tests involving $|V_{ud}|$, $|V_{us}|$ and their implications for physics beyond the Standard Model are described.

Ab initio nuclear thermodynamics from lattice effective field theory

We show that the {\it ab initio} calculations of nuclear thermodynamics can be performed efficiently using lattice effective field theory. The simulations use a new approach called the pinhole trace algorithm to calculate thermodynamic observables for a fixed number of protons and neutrons enclosed in a finite box. In this framework, we calculate the equation of state, the liquid-vapor coexistence line and the critical point of neutral symmetric nuclear matter with high precision. Since the algorithm uses a canonical ensemble with a fixed number of particles, it provides a sizable computational advantage over grand canonical ensemble simulations that can be a factor of several thousands to as much as several millions for large volume simulations.

Improved $K_{e3}$ radiative corrections sharpen the $K_{μ2}$--$K_{l3}$ discrepancy

The measurements of $V_{us}$ in leptonic $(K_{μ2})$ and semileptonic $(K_{l3})$ kaon decays exhibit a $3σ$ disagreement, which could originate either from physics beyond the Standard Model or some large unidentified Standard Model systematic effects. Clarifying this issue requires a careful examination of all existing Standard Model inputs. Making use of a newly-proposed computational framework and the most recent lattice QCD results, we perform a comprehensive re-analysis of the electroweak radiative corrections to the $K_{e3}$ decay rates that achieves an unprecedented level of precision of $10^{-4}$, which improves the current best results by almost an order of magnitude. No large systematic effects are found, which suggests that the electroweak radiative corrections should be removed from the ``list of culprits'' responsible for the $K_{μ2}$--$K_{l3}$ discrepancy.

Resonance contributions in $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$ within the light-come sum rule approach

In this work, we study the resonance contributions to the decay $B^-\to K^+K^-π^-$, which is dominated by the scalar $f_0(980), K_0^*(1430)$, vector $ρ(1450), ϕ(1020), K^*(892)$ and tensor $f_2(1270)$ resonances. The three-body decay is reduced to various quasi two-body decays, where the $B$ meson firstly decays into a resonance and a pion or a kaon, subsequently the resonance decays into the other two final-state mesons. The quasi two-body decays are calculated within the light-cone sum rule approach utilizing the leading twist $B$ meson light-cone distribution amplitudes. Finally, the decay branching fraction contribution from each resonance are calculated. Some of them are compatible with experiment or previous theoretical works. Including the effects of non-resonant and final-state interactions, we also evaluate the total branching fraction.

Coupled-channel analysis of pion- and eta-electroproduction with the Jülich-Bonn-Washington model

Pion and eta electroproduction data are jointly analyzed for the first time, up to a center-of-mass energy of 1.6 GeV. The framework is a dynamical coupled-channel model, based on the recent Jülich-Bonn-Washington analysis of pion electroproduction data for the same energy range. Comparisons are made to a number of single-channel eta electroproduction fits. By comparing multipoles of comparable fit quality, we find some of these amplitudes are well determined over the near-threshold region, while others will require fits over an extended energy range.

New insights into the nucleon's electromagnetic structure

We present a combined analysis of the electromagnetic form factors of the nucleon in the space- and timelike regions using dispersion theory. Our framework provides a consistent description of the experimental data over the full range of momentum transfer, in line with the strictures from analyticity and unitarity. The statistical uncertainties of the extracted form factors are estimated using the bootstrap method, while systematic errors are determined from variations of the spectral functions. We also perform a high-precision extraction of the nucleon radii and find good agreement with previous analyses of spacelike data alone. For the proton charge radius, we find $r_E^p = 0.840^{+0.003}_{-0.002}{}^{+0.002}_{-0.002}$~fm, where the first error is statistical and the second one is systematic. The Zemach radius and third moment are in agreement with Lamb shift measurements and hyperfine splittings. The combined data set of space- and timelike data disfavors a zero crossing of $μ_p G_E^p/G_M^p$ in the spacelike region. Finally, we discuss the status and perspectives of modulus and phase of the form factors in the timelike region in the context of future experiments as well as the onset of perturbative QCD.

$A=4-7$ $Ξ$ hypernuclei based on interactions from chiral effective field theory

We investigate the existence of bound $Ξ$ \break states in systems with $A=4-7$ baryons using the Jacobi NCSM approach in combination with chiral NN and $Ξ$N interactions. We find three shallow bound states for the NNN$Ξ$ system (with $(J^π,T)=(1^+,0)$, $(0^+,1)$ and $(1^+,1)$) with quite similar binding energies. The $^5_Ξ\mathrm{H}(\frac{1}{2}^+,\frac{1}{2})$ and $^7_Ξ\mathrm{H}(\frac{1}{2}^+,\frac{3}{2})$ hypernuclei are also clearly bound with respect to the thresholds $^4\mathrm{He} + Ξ$ and $^6\mathrm{He} +Ξ$, respectively. The binding of all these $Ξ$ systems is predominantly due to the attraction of the chiral $Ξ$N potential in the $^{33}S_1$ channel. A perturbative estimation suggests that the decay widths of all the observed states could be rather small.

High-precision determination of the $K_{e3}$ radiative corrections

We report a high-precision calculation of the Standard Model electroweak radiative corrections in the $K\to πe^+ν(γ)$ decay as a part of the combined theory effort to understand the existing anomaly in the determinations of $V_{us}$. Our new analysis features a chiral resummation of the large infrared-singular terms in the radiative corrections and a well-under-control strong interaction uncertainty based on the most recent lattice QCD inputs. While being consistent with the current state-of-the-art results obtained from chiral perturbation theory, we reduce the existing theory uncertainty from $10^{-3}$ to $10^{-4}$. Our result suggests that the Standard Model electroweak effects cannot account for the $V_{us}$ anomaly.

Revisiting the nature of the $P_c$ pentaquarks

The nature of the three narrow $P_c$ states, i.e., $P_c(4312)$, $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$, is under intense discussion since their discovery from the updated analysis by LHCb. In this work we extend our previous coupled-channel approach [Phys. Rev. Lett. \bf{124}, 072001 (2020)] by including the $Λ_c\bar{D}^{(*)}$ and $η_cp$ as explicitly in addition to the $J/ψp$, as required by unitarity and heavy quark spin symmetry (HQSS). Since inelastic parameters are very badly constrained by the current data, three schemes are considered: (a) scheme I with pure contact interactions and without the $Λ_c\bar D^{(*)}$ interactions, (b) scheme II, where the one-pion exchange is added to scheme I, and (c) scheme III, where the $Λ_c \bar D^{(*)}$ are included in addition. It is shown that to obtain cutoff independent results, OPE in the multichannel system is to be supplemented with $S$-$D$ mixing contact terms. We demonstrate that the experimental data for the $J/ψp$ invariant mass distribution are consistent with the interpretation of the $P_c(4312)$ and $P_c(4440)/P_c(4457)$ as $Σ_c\bar{D}$ and $Σ_c \bar{D}^{*}$ hadronic molecules, respectively, and that the data show clear evidence for a new narrow $P_c(4380)$, as a $Σ_c^*\bar D$ molecule, which should exist as a consequence of HQSS. While two equally good solutions are found in scheme I, only one of these solutions with the quantum numbers of the $P_c(4440)$ and $P_c(4457)$ being $J^P=3/2^-$ and $1/2^-$, respectively, survives the requirement of regulator independence once the OPE is included. Moreover, we predict the line shapes in the elastic and inelastic channels and demonstrate that those related to the $P_c(4440)$ and the $P_c(4457)$ in the corresponding $Σ_c^{(*)}\bar{D}$ and $η_cp$ mass distributions allow one to confirm the quantum numbers given above, once the data are available.
