Quantifying alpha clustering in the ground states of 16-O and 20-Ne

Understanding the role of multi-nucleon correlations in the structure of light nuclei is at the forefront of modern nuclear science. In this letter, we present a quantitative benchmark study of alpha-cluster correlations in the ground states of 16-O and 20-Ne. Experimental data provide direct evidence that the wave functions of the ground states of 16-O and 20-Ne are dominated by alpha-cluster correlations, in agreement with the predictions of sophisticated nuclear structure models. We also provide a new model-independent constraint for the alpha asymptotic normalization coefficient of the 16-O ground state and discuss the implications of these findings on the 12-C(alpha,gamma)16-O reaction, which is of critical importance for nuclear astrophysics.

International Workshop on Next Generation Gamma-Ray Source

A workshop on The Next Generation Gamma-Ray Sources sponsored by the Office of Nuclear Physics at the Department of Energy, was held November 17--19, 2016 in Bethesda, Maryland. The goals of the workshop were to identify basic and applied research opportunities at the frontiers of nuclear physics that would be made possible by the beam capabilities of an advanced laser Compton beam facility. To anchor the scientific vision to realistically achievable beam specifications using proven technologies, the workshop brought together experts in the fields of electron accelerators, lasers, and optics to examine the technical options for achieving the beam specifications required by the most compelling parts of the proposed research programs. An international assembly of participants included current and prospective $γ$-ray beam users, accelerator and light-source physicists, and federal agency program managers. Sessions were organized to foster interactions between the beam users and facility developers, allowing for information sharing and mutual feedback between the two groups. The workshop findings and recommendations are summarized in this whitepaper.

Resonance properties from lattice energy levels using chiral effective field theory

We use the chiral effective field theory to study the lattice finite-volume energy levels from the meson-meson scattering. The hadron resonance properties and the scattering amplitudes at physical masses are determined from the lattice energy levels calculated at unphysically large pion masses. The results from the $πη, K\bar{K}$ and $πη'$ coupled-channel scattering and the $a_0(980)$ resonance are explicitly given as a concrete example.

Towards a precise determination of the scattering amplitudes of the charmed and light-flavor pseudoscalar mesons

We study the scattering of the light-flavor pseudoscalar mesons ($π, K, η$) off the ground-state charmed mesons ($D,D_s$) within chiral effective field theory. The recent lattice simulation results on various scattering lengths and the finite-volume spectra both in the moving and center-of-mass frames, most of which are obtained at unphysical meson masses, are used to constrain the free parameters in our theory. Explicit formulas to include the $S$- and $P$-wave mixing to determine the finite-volume energy levels are provided. After a successful reproduction of the lattice data, we perform a chiral extrapolation to predict the quantities with physical meson masses, including phase shifts, inelasticities, resonance pole positions and the corresponding residues from the scattering of the light pseudoscalar and charmed mesons.

Testing semi-local chiral two-nucleon interaction in selected electroweak processes

The recently developed semi-local improved chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction is used for the first time to study several electromagnetic and weak processes at energies below the pion production threshold. Cross sections and selected polarization observables for deuteron photodisintegration, nucleon-deuteron radiative capture, three-body $^3$He photodisintegration as well as capture rates for decays of the muonic $^2$H and $^3$He atoms are calculated. The Lippmann-Schwinger and Faddeev equations in momentum space are solved to obtain nuclear states. The electromagnetic current operator is taken as a single nucleon current supplemented by many-body contributions induced via the Siegert theorem. For muon capture processes the nonrelativistic weak current together with the dominant relativistic corrections is used. Our results compare well with experimental data, demonstrating the same quality as is observed for the semi-phenomenological AV18 potential. Compared to the older version of the chiral potential with a nonlocal regularization, a much smaller cut-off dependence is found for the state-of-art chiral local interaction employed in this paper. Finally, estimates of errors due to the truncation of the chiral expansion are given.

Pion photoproduction off the proton in a gauge-invariant chiral unitary framework

We investigate pion photoproduction off the proton in a manifestly gauge-invariant chiral unitary extension of chiral perturbation theory. In a first step, we consider meson-baryon scattering taking into account all next-to-leading order contact interactions. The resulting low-energy constants are determined by a fit to s-wave pion-nucleon scattering and the low-energy data for the reaction pi- p --> eta n. To assess the theoretical uncertainty, we perform two different fit strategies. Having determined the low-energy constants, we then analyse the data on the s-wave multipole amplitudes E0+ of pion and eta photoproduction. These are parameter-free predictions, as the two new low-energy constants are determined by the neutron and proton magnetic moments.

Eta-photoproduction in a gauge-invariant chiral unitary framework

We analyse photoproduction of eta mesons off the proton in a gauge-invariant chiral unitary framework. The interaction kernel for meson-baryon scattering is derived from the leading order chiral effective Lagrangian and iterated in a Bethe-Salpeter equation. The recent precise threshold data from the Crystal Ball at MAMI can be described rather well and the complex pole corresponding to the S11(1535) is extracted. An extension of the kernel is also discussed.

Hadronic-loop induced mass shifts in scalar heavy-light mesons

We calculate the mass shifts of heavy-light scalar mesons due to hadronic loops under the assumption that these vanish for the groundstate heavy-light mesons. The results show that the masses calculated in quark models can be reduced significantly. We stress that the mass alone is not a signal for a molecular interpretation. Both the resulting mass and the width suggest the observed $D_0^*$ state could be a dressed $c\bar q$ state. We give further predictions for the bottom scalar mesons which can be used to test the dressing mechanism.

Charged Lepton Radiative and B-meson Double Radiative Decays in Models with Universal Extra Dimensions

This paper addresses the role of Large Extra Dimensions in some flavor changing neutral current (FCNC) driven processes. In particular we have investigated radiative decays of charged leptons within models with only one universal extra dimension (UED). Loop contributions with internal fermions and scalars of comparable mass would seem to yield sizeable amplitudes, since the generic quadratic suppression factor is changed into a linear one. Such scenarios can in principle be realized in models with universal extra space dimensions. Yet our calculations of the Kaluza-Klein (KK) contributions to these radiative decays show this expected relative enhancement to disappear due to the near mass degeneracy of the heavy neutrinos from the different generations. In this paper we estimate also the UED contribution to the $B_{s,d}\toγγ$ rate and find an enhancement of 3% and 6%, respectively, over the SM prediction.

Flatte-like distributions and the a_0(980)/f_0(980) mesons

We explore the features of Flatte-like parametrizations. In particular, we demonstrate that the large variation in the absolute values of the coupling constants to the pi-eta (or pi-pi) and KKbar channels for the a_0(980) and f_0(980) mesons that one can find in the literature can be explained by a specific scaling behaviour of the Flatte amplitude for energies near the KKbar threshold. We argue that the ratio of the coupling constants can be much better determined from a fit to experimental data.

Spectrum and decays of kaonic hydrogen

By using the non-relativistic effective Lagrangian approach to bound states, a complete expression for the isospin-breaking corrections to the energy levels and the decay widths of kaonic hydrogen is obtained up-to-and-including O(alpha,m_d-m_u) in QCD. It is demonstrated that, although the leading-order corrections at O(alpha^{1/2},(m_d-m_u)^{1/2}) emerging due to the unitarity cusp, are huge, they can be expressed solely in terms of the KN S-wave scattering lengths. Consequently, at leading order, it is possible to derive parameter-free modified Deser-type relations, which can be used to extract the scattering lengths from the hadronic atom data.

The S-Wave Pion-Nucleon Scattering Lengths from Pionic Atoms using Effective Field Theory

The pion-deuteron scattering length is computed to next-to-next-to-leading order in baryon chiral perturbation theory. A modified power-counting is then formulated which properly accounts for infrared enhancements engendered by the large size of the deuteron, as compared to the pion Compton wavelength. We use the precise experimental value of the real part of the pion-deuteron scattering length determined from the decay of pionic deuterium, together with constraints on pion-nucleon scattering lengths from the decay of pionic hydrogen, to extract the isovector and isoscalar S-wave pion-nucleon scattering lengths, a^- and a^+, respectively. We find a^-=(0.0918 \pm 0.0013) M_π^{-1} and a^+=(-0.0034 \pm 0.0007) M_π^{-1}.

Chiral dynamics in few-nucleon systems

We employ the chiral nucleon-nucleon potential derived using the method of unitary transformation up to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) to study bound and scattering states in the two-nucleon system. The predicted partial wave phase shifts and mixing parameters for higher energies and higher angular momenta beyond the ones which are fitted are mostly well described for energies below 300 MeV. Various deuteron properties are discussed. We also apply the next-to-leading order (NLO) potential to 3N and 4N systems. The resulting 3N and 4N binding energies are in the same range what is found using standard NN potentials. Experimental low-energy 3N scattering observables are also very well reproduced like for standard NN forces. Surprisingly the long standing Ay-puzzle is resolved at NLO. The cut-off dependence of the scattering observables is rather mild.

The nucleon-nucleon interaction and properties of the nucleon in a $πρω$ soliton model including a dilaton field with anomalous dimension

We investigate an extended chiral soliton model which includes $π, ρ, ω$ and $σ$ mesons as explicit degrees of freedom. The Lagrangian incorporates chiral symmetry and broken scale invariance. A scalar-isoscalar meson $σ$ is associated with a quarkonium dilaton field with a mass $\msig\approx 550 $MeV. We show that the scalar field with anomalous dimension slightly changes the static and electromagnetic properties of the nucleon. In contrast, it plays a significant role in nucleon-nucleon dynamics and gives an opportunity to describe well the two-nucleon interaction.

Strange Magnetism

We present an analytic and parameter-free expression for the momentum dependence of the strange magnetic form factor of the nucleon and its corresponding radius which has been derived in Heavy Baryon Chiral Perturbation Theory. We also discuss a model-independent relation between the isoscalar magnetic and the strange magnetic form factors of the nucleon based on chiral symmetry and SU(3) only. These limites are used to derive bounds on the strange magnetic moment of the proton from the recent measurement by the SAMPLE collaboration.
