Irregularity of hypergeometric systems via slopes along coordinate subspaces

We study the irregularity sheaves attached to the $A$-hypergeometric $D$-module $M_A(β)$ introduced by Gel'fand et al., where $A\in\mathbb{Z}^{d\times n}$ is pointed of full rank and $β\in\mathbb{C}^d$. More precisely, we investigate the slopes of this module along coordinate subspaces. In the process we describe the associated graded ring to a positive semigroup ring for a filtration defined by an arbitrary weight vector $L$ on torus equivariant generators. To this end we introduce the $(A,L)$-umbrella, a simplicial complex determined by $A$ and $L$, and identify its facets with the components of the associated graded ring. We then establish a correspondence between the full $(A,L)$-umbrella and the components of the $L$-characteristic variety of $M_A(β)$. We compute in combinatorial terms the multiplicities of these components in the $L$-characteristic cycle of the associated Euler-Koszul complex, identifying them with certain intersection multiplicities. We deduce from this that slopes of $M_A(β)$ are combinatorial, independent of $β$, and in one-to-one correspondence with jumps of the $(A,L)$-umbrella. This confirms a conjecture of Sturmfels and gives a converse of a theorem of Hotta: $M_A(β)$ is regular if and only if $A$ defines a projective variety.

Local cohomology and pure morphisms

We study a question raised by Eisenbud, Mustata, and Stillman regarding the injectivity of natural maps from Ext modules to local cohomology modules. We obtain some positive answers to this question which extend earlier results of Lyubeznik. In the process, we also prove a vanishing theorem for local cohomology modules which connects theorems previously known in the case of positive characteristic and in the case of monomial ideals.

Cohen-Macaulayness and computation of Newton graded toric rings

Let $H$ be a positive semigroup in $\mathbb{Z}^d$ generated by $A$, and let $K[H]$ be the associated semigroup ring over a field $K$. We investigate heredity of the Cohen-Macaulay property from $K[H]$ to both its $A$-Newton graded ring and to its face rings. We show by example that neither one inherits in general the Cohen-Macaulay property. On the positive side we show that for every $H$ there exist generating sets $A$ for which the Newton graduation preserves Cohen-Macaulayness. This gives an elementary proof for an important vanishing result on $A$-hypergeometric Euler-Koszul homology. As a tool for our investigations we develop an algorithm to compute algorithmically the Newton filtration on a toric ring.

A connectedness result in positive characteristic

Let $(R,m)$ be a complete local ring of positive dimension, which contains a separably closed coefficient field of prime characteristic. Using a vanishing theorem of Peskine-Szpiro, Lyubeznik proved that every element of the local cohomology module $H^1_m(R)$ is killed by an iteration of the Frobenius map if and only if $R$ has dimension at least two and its punctured spectrum is connected in the Zariski topology. We give a simple proof of this theorem and of a variation which, more generally, yields the number of connected components.

Duality and monodromy reducibility of $A$-hypergeometric systems

We study $A$-hypergeometric systems $H_A(β)$ in the sense of Gelfand, Kapranov and Zelevinsky under two aspects: the structure of their holonomically dual system, and reducibility of their rank module. We prove first that rank-jumping parameters always correspond to reducible systems, and we show that the property of being reducible is ``invariant modulo the lattice''. In the second part we study a conjecture of Nobuki Takayama which states that the holonomic dual of $H_A(β)$ is of the form $H_A(β')$ for suitable $β'$. We prove the conjecture for all matrices $A$ and generic parameter $β$, exhibit an example that shows that in general the conjecture cannot hold, and present a refined version of the conjecture. Questions on both duality and reducibility have been impossible to answer with classical methods. This paper may be seen as an example of the usefulness, and scope of applications, of the homological tools for $A$-hypergeometric systems developed in \cite{MMW}.

On the arithmetic rank of certain Segre products

We compute the arithmetic ranks of the defining ideals of homogeneous coordinate rings of certain Segre products arising from elliptic curves. The cohomological dimension of these ideals varies with the characteristic of the field, though the arithmetic rank does not. We also study the related set-theoretic Cohen-Macaulay property for these ideals.

Homological Methods for Hypergeometric Families

We analyze the behavior of the holonomic rank in families of holonomic systems over complex algebraic varieties by providing homological criteria for rank-jumps in this general setting. Then we investigate rank-jump behavior for hypergeometric systems H_A(β) arising from a d x n integer matrix A and a parameter β\in \CC^d. To do so we introduce an Euler-Koszul functor for hypergeometric families over \CC^d, whose homology generalizes the notion of a hypergeometric system, and we prove a homology isomorphism with our general homological construction above. We show that a parameter βis rank-jumping for H_A(β) if and only if βlies in the Zariski closure of the set of \ZZ^d-graded degrees αwhere the local cohomology \bigoplus_{i<d}H^i_\frakm(\CC[\NN A])_αof the semigroup ring \CC[\NN A] supported at its maximal graded ideal \frakm is nonzero. Consequently, H_A(β) has no rank-jumps over \CC^d if and only if \CC[\NN A] is Cohen-Macaulay of dimension d.

Arbitrary rank jumps for $A$-hypergeometric systems through Laurent polynomials

We investigate the solution space of hypergeometric systems of differential equations in the sense of Gelfand, Graev, Kapranov and Zelevinsky. For any integer $d \geq 2$ we construct a matrix $A_d \in \N^{d \times 2d}$ and a parameter vector $β_d$ such that the holonomic rank of the $A$-hypergeometric system $H_{A_d}(β_d)$ exceeds the simplicial volume $\vol(A_d)$ by at least $d-1$. The largest previously known gap between rank and volume was two. Our argument is elementary in that it uses only linear algebra, and our construction gives evidence to the general observation that rank-jumps seem to go hand in hand with the existence of multiple Laurent (or Puiseux) polynomial solutions.

Bernstein-Sato polynomial versus cohomology of the Milnor fiber for generic arrangements

In this note we determine the Bernstein-Sato polynomial $b_Q(s)$ of a generic central arrangement $Q=\prod_{i=1}^kH_i$ of hyperplanes. We establish a connection between the roots of $b_Q(s)$ and the degrees of the generators for the top cohomology of the corresponding Milnor fiber. This connection holds for all homogeneous polynomials. We also introduce certain subschemes of the arrangement determined by the roots of $b_Q(s)$.

Algorithmic Determination of the Rational Cohomology of Complex Varieties via Differential Forms

We give algorithms for the computation of the algebraic de Rham cohomology of open and closed algebraic sets inside projective space or other smooth complex toric varieties. The methods, which are based on Gröbner basis computations in rings of differential operators, can also be used to compute the cohomology of intersections of smooth closed and open subsets, and in certain situations the cup-product structure. We give some examples which were carried out with the help of \Mtwo.

Computing homomorphisms between holonomic D-modules

Let K be a subfield of the complex numbers, and let D be the Weyl algebra of K-linear differential operators on K[x_1,...,x_n]. If M and N are holonomic left D-modules we present an algorithm that computes explicit generators for the finite dimensional vector space hom_D(M,N). This enables us to answer algorithmically whether two given holonomic modules are isomorphic. More generally, our algorithm can be used to get explicit generators for ext^i_D(M,N) for any i.

D-modules on Smooth Toric Varieties

Let X be a smooth toric variety. David Cox introduced the homogeneous coordinate ring S of X and its irrelevant ideal B. Extending well-known results on projective space, Cox established the following: (1) the category of quasi-coherent sheaves on X is equivalent to the category of graded S-modules modulo B-torsion, (2) the variety X is a geometric quotient of Spec(S) V(B) by a suitable torus action. We provide the D-module version of these results. More specifically, let A denote the ring of differential operators on Spec(S). We show that the category of D-modules on X is equivalent to a subcategory of graded A-modules modulo B-torsion. Additionally, we prove that the characteristic variety of a D-module is a geometric quotient of an open subset of the characteristic variety of the associated A-module and that holonomic D-modules correspond to holonomic A-modules.

A Localization Algorithm for $D$-modules

We present a method to compute the holonomic extension of a $D$-module from a Zariski open set in affine space to the whole space. A particular application is the localization of coherent $D$-modules which are holonomic on the complement of an affine variety.

Algorithmic Computation of de Rham Cohomology of Complements of Complex Affine Varieties

Let $X=\C^n$. In this paper we present an algorithm that computes the de Rham cohomology groups $H^i_{dR}(U,\C)$ where $U$ is the complement of an arbitrary Zariski-closed set $Y$ in $X$. Our algorithm is a merger of the algorithm given by T.~Oaku and N.~Takayama (\cite{O-T2}), who considered the case where $Y$ is a hypersurface, and our methods from \cite{W-1} for the computation of local cohomology. We further extend the algorithm to compute de Rham cohomology groups with support $H^i_{dR,Z}(U,\C)$ where again $U$ is an arbitrary Zariski-open subset of $X$ and $Z$ is an arbitrary Zariski-closed subset of $U$. Our main tool is the generalization of the restriction process from \cite{O-T1} to complexes of modules over the Weyl algebra. All presented algorithms are based on Gröbner basis computations in the Weyl algebra.
