Nonlocal-to-local limit in linearized viscoelasticity

We study the quasistatic evolution of a linear peridynamic Kelvin-Voigt viscoelastic material. More specifically, we consider the gradient flow of a nonlocal elastic energy with respect to a nonlocal viscous dissipation. Following an evolutionary $Γ$-convergence approach, we prove that the solutions of the nonlocal problem converge to the solution of the local problem, when the peridynamic horizon tends to $0$, that is, in the nonlocal-to-local limit.

Discrete-to-continuum linearization in atomistic dynamics

In the stationary case, atomistic interaction energies can be proved to $Γ$-converge to classical elasticity models in the simultaneous atomistic-to-continuum and linearization limit [19],[40]. The aim of this note is that of extending the convergence analysis to the dynamic setting. Moving within the framework of [40], we prove that solutions of the equation of motion driven by atomistic deformation energies converge to the solutions of the momentum equation for the corresponding continuum energy of linearized elasticity. By recasting the evolution problems in their equivalent energy-dissipation-inertia-principle form, we directly argue at the variational level of evolutionary $Γ$-convergence [32],[36]. This in particular ensures the pointwise in time convergence of the energies.

Analysis of a combined Filtered/phase-field approach to topology optimization in elasticit

We advance a combined filtered/phase-field approach to topology optimization in the setting of linearized elasticity. Existence of minimizers is proved and rigorous parameter asymptotics are discussed by means of variational convergence techniques. Moreover, we investigate an abstract space discretization in the spirit of conformal finite elements. Eventually, stationarity is equivalently reformulated in terms of a Lagrangian.

Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy approach to doubly nonlinear wave equations

We discuss a variational approach to doubly nonlinear wave equations of the form $ρu_{tt} + g (u_t) - Δu + f (u)=0$. This approach hinges on the minimization of a parameter-dependent family of uniformly convex functionals over entire trajectories, namely the so-called Weighted Inertia-Dissipation-Energy (WIDE) functionals. We prove that the WIDE functionals admit minimizers and that the corresponding Euler-Lagrange system is solvable in the strong sense. Moreover, we check that the parameter-dependent minimizers converge, up to subsequences, to a solution of the target doubly nonlinear wave equation as the parameter goes to $0$. The analysis relies on specific estimates on the WIDE minimizers, on the decomposition of the subdifferential of the WIDE functional, and on the identification of the nonlinearities in the limit. Eventually, we investigate the viscous limit $ρ\to 0$, both at the functional level and on that of the equation.

A characterization of $\ell_1$ double bubbles with general interface interaction

We investigate the optimal arrangements of two planar sets of given volume which are minimizing the $\ell_1$ double-bubble interaction functional. The latter features a competition between the minimization of the $\ell_1$ perimeters of the two sets and the maximization of their $\ell_1$ interface. We investigate the problem in its full generality for sets of finite perimeter, by considering the whole range of possible interaction intensities and all relative volumes of the two sets. The main result is the complete classification of minimizers.

Rate-independent stochastic evolution equations: parametrized solutions

By extending to the stochastic setting the classical vanishing viscosity approach we prove the existence of suitably weak solutions of a class of nonlinear stochastic evolution equation of rate-independent type. Approximate solutions are obtained via viscous regularization. Upon properly rescaling time, these approximations converge to a parametrized martingale solution of the problem in rescaled time, where the rescaled noise is given by a general square-integrable cylindrical martingale with absolutely continuous quadratic variation. In absence of jumps, these are strong-in-time martingale solutions of the problem in the original, not rescaled time.

Curvature-dependent Eulerian interfaces in elastic solids

We propose a sharp-interface model for a hyperelastic material consisting of two phases. In this model, phase interfaces are treated in the deformed configuration, resulting in a fully Eulerian interfacial energy. In order to penalize large curvature of the interface, we include a geometric term featuring a curvature varifold. Equilibrium solutions are proved to exist via minimization. We then utilize this model in an Eulerian topology optimization problem that incorporates a curvature penalization.

Phase-field topology optimization with periodic microstructure

Progresses in additive manufacturing technologies allow the realization of finely graded microstructured materials with tunable mechanical properties. This paves the way to a wealth of innovative applications, calling for the combined design of the macroscopic mechanical piece and its underlying microstructure. In this context, we investigate a topology optimization problem for an elastic medium featuring a periodic microstructure. The optimization problem is variationally formulated as a bilevel minimization of phase-field type. By resorting to Gamma-convergence techniques, we characterize the homogenized problem and investigate the corresponding sharp-interface limit. First-order optimality conditions are derived, both at the homogenized phase-field and at the sharp-interface level.

The double-bubble problem on the square lattice

We investigate minimal-perimeter configurations of two finite sets of points on the square lattice. This corresponds to a lattice version of the classical double-bubble problem. We give a detailed description of the fine geometry of minimisers and, in some parameter regime, we compute the optimal perimeter as a function of the size of the point sets. Moreover, we provide a sharp bound on the difference between two minimisers, which are generally not unique, and use it to rigorously identify their Wulff shape, as the size of the point sets scales up.

Viscoelastodynamics of swelling porous solids at large strains by an Eulerian approach

A model of saturated hyperelastic porous solids at large strains is formulated and analysed. The material response is assumed to be of a viscoelastic Kelvin-Voigt type and inertial effects are considered, too. The flow of the diffusant is driven by the gradient of the chemical potential and is coupled to the mechanics via the occurrence of swelling and squeezing. Buoyancy effects due to the evolving mass density in a gravity field are covered. Higher-order viscosity is also included, allowing for physically relevant stored energies and local invertibility of the deformation. The whole system is formulated in a fully Eulerian form in terms of rates. The energetics of the model is discussed and the existence and regularity of weak solutions is proved by a combined regularization-Galerkin approximation argument.

Doubly nonlinear stochastic evolution equations

We present an existence theory for martingale and strong solutions to doubly nonlinear evolution equations in a separable Hilbert space in the form $$d(Au) + Bu\,dt \ni F(u)\,dt + G(u)\,dW$$ where both $A$ and $B$ are maximal monotone operators, possibly multivalued, $F$ and $G$ are Lipschitz-continuous, and $W$ is a cylindrical Wiener process. Via regularization and passage-to-the-limit we show the existence of martingale solutions. The identification of the limit is obtained by a lower-semicontinuity argument based on a suitably generalized Itô's formula. If either $A$ or $B$ is linear and symmetric, existence and uniqueness of strong solutions follows. Eventually, several applications are discussed, including doubly nonlinear stochastic Stefan-type problems.

Viscosity solutions for nonlocal equations with space-dependent operators

We consider a class of elliptic and parabolic problems, featuring a specific nonlocal operator of fractional-laplacian type, where integration is taken on variable domains. Both elliptic and parabolic problems are proved to be uniquely solvable in the viscosity sense. Moreover, some spectral properties of the elliptic operator are investigated, proving existence and simplicity of the first eigenvalue. Eventually, parabolic solutions are proven to converge to the corresponding limiting elliptic solution in the long-time limit.

Generalized Minimizing Movements for the varifold Canham-Helfrich flow

The gradient flow of the Canham-Helfrich functional is tackled via the Generalized Minimizing Movements approach. We prove the existence of solutions in Wasserstein spaces of varifolds, as well as upper and lower diameter bounds. In the more regular setting of multiply covered $C^{1,1}$ surfaces, we provide a Li-Yau-type estimate for the Canham-Helfrich energy and prove the conservation of multiplicity along the evolution.

Existence results for a morphoelastic model

We present some existence results for three-dimensional quasistatic morphoelasticity. The state of the growing body is described by its deformation and the underlying growth tensor and is ruled by the interplay of hyperelastic energy minimization and growth dynamics. By introducing a regularization in the model, we prove that solutions can be obtained as limits of time-discrete solutions, built by means of an exponential-update scheme. By further allowing the dependence of growth dynamics on an additional scalar field, to be interpreted as a nutrient or inhibitor, we formulate an optimal control problem and prove existence of optimal controls and states. Eventually, we tackle the existence of coupled morphoelastic and nutrient solutions, when the latter is allowed to diffuse and interact with the growing body.

Bifurcation of elastic curves with modulated stiffness

We investigate the equilibrium configurations of closed planar elastic curves of fixed length, whose stiffness, also known as the bending rigidity, depends on an additional density variable. The underlying variational model relies on the minimization of a bending energy with respect to shape and density and can be considered as a one-dimensional analogue of the Canham-Helfrich model for heterogeneous biological membranes. We present a generalized Euler-Bernoulli elastica functional featuring a density-dependent stiffness coefficient. In order to treat the inherent nonconvexity of the problem we introduce an additional length scale in the model by means of a density gradient term. We derive the system of Euler-Lagrange equations and study the bifurcation structure of solutions with respect to the model parameters. Both analytical and numerical results are presented.

Stability of $\mathbb{Z}^2$ configurations in 3D

Inspired by the issue of stability of molecular structures, we investigate the strict minimality of point sets with respect to configurational energies featuring two- and three-body contributions. Our main focus is on characterizing those configurations which cannot be deformed without changing distances between first neighbors or angles formed by pairs of first neighbors. Such configurations are called {\it angle-rigid}. We tackle this question in the class of finite configurations in $\mathbb{Z}^2$, seen as planar three-dimensional point sets. A sufficient condition preventing angle-rigidity is presented. This condition is also proved to be necessary when restricted to specific subclasses of configurations.

The Energy-Dissipation Principle for stochastic parabolic equations

The Energy-Dissipation Principle provides a variational tool for the analysis of parabolic evolution problems: solutions are characterized as so-called null-minimizers of a global functional on entire trajectories. This variational technique allows for applying the general results of the calculus of variations to the underlying differential problem and has been successfully applied in a variety of deterministic cases, ranging from doubly nonlinear flows to curves of maximal slope in metric spaces. The aim of this note is to extend the Energy-Dissipation Principle to stochastic parabolic evolution equations. Applications to stability and optimal control are also presented.

Tilings with nonflat squares: a characterization

Inspired by the modelization of 2D materials systems, we characterize arrangements of identical nonflat squares in 3D. We prove that the fine geometry of such arrangements is completely characterized in terms of patterns of mutual orientations of the squares and that these patterns are periodic and one-dimensional. In contrast to the flat case, the nonflatness of the tiles gives rise to nontrivial geometries, with configurations bending, wrinkling, or even rolling up in one direction.
