Results from MAGIC Observations of Extragalactic Relativistic Sources

The Major Atmospheric Gamma-ray Imaging Cherenkov (MAGIC) experiment is an array of two 17-meter telescopes located in the Canary Island of La Palma that observes the very-high energy (VHE) gamma-ray sky in stereoscopic mode since 2009. MAGIC is distinguished by its low-energy threshold of approximately 50 GeV, which grants the system a unique potential in the study of distant extragalactic sources whose gamma-ray emission is significantly attenuated due to absorption by the extragalactic background light (EBL). The observation of non-thermal gamma rays in the GeV-TeV range from extragalactic sources is a characteristic signature of their relativistic nature and therefore fundamentally important for our understanding of the physics of these objects. Since the beginning of its stereo operation, MAGIC has observed a large number of active galactic nuclei (AGN) of different classes, including several blazars and distant quasars. In this paper we will review some of the most important results of these observations.

Multifrequency Variability and Correlations from Extensive Observing Campaigns of Mkn 421 and Mkn 501 in 2009

We are performing an unprecedentedly long and dense monitoring of the multi-frequency (radio to TeV) emission from the classical TeV blazars Mkn 421 and Mkn 501. These objects are among the brightest X-ray/TeV blazars in the sky and among the few sources whose spectral energy distributions (SED) can be completely characterised by the current instruments. This is a multi-year and multi-instrument programme which includes the participation of VLBA, Swift, RXTE, MAGIC, VERITAS, Whipple, the Fermi/LAT Gamma-ray Observatory, GASP-WEBT, among other collaborations and instruments which combined provide the most detailed temporal and energy coverage of these sources to date. In this proceedings we will focus mostly on the results obtained with the multi-frequency data from 2009, for which the SEDs of Mkn 421 and Mkn 501 are very similar and can be described by a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton scenario. We will report on the multi-frequency variability derived from these data.

Enhanced emission from GRB 110328A could be evidence for tidal disruption of a star

On March 28, Swift's Burst Alert Telescope discovered a source in the constellation Draco when it erupted in a series of X-ray blasts. The explosion, catalogued as gamma-ray burst (GRB) 110328A, repeatedly flared in the following days, making the interpretation of the event as a GRB unlikely. Here we suggest that the event could be due to the tidal disruption of a star that approaches the pericentric distance of a black hole, and we use this fact to derive bounds on the physical characteristics of such system, based on the variability timescales and energetics of the observed X-ray emission.
