Analysis on Symmetric and Locally Symmetric Spaces (Multiplicities, Cohomology and Zeta functions)

The goal of the course was a review of results mainly due to M. Olbrich and the first author. We consider a discrete cocompact subgroup $Γ$ of a semisimple Lie group $G$. We relate the group cohomology of $Γ$ with coefficients in the maximal globalization of a representation of $G$ with the multiplicities of unitary representations of $G$ in $L^2(G/Γ)$. Explicit calculations are given in the case $G=SL(2,R)$. In the rank-one case we state a version of the Selberg trace formula, discuss the singularities of the Selberg zeta-functions, and state their relation with the cohomology of $Γ$ in principal series representations.

Twisted K-Theory and TQFT

The goal of the present paper is the calculation of the equivariant twisted K-theory of a compact Lie group which acts on itself by conjugations, and elements of a TQFT-structure on the twisted K-groups. These results are originally due to D.S.Freed, M.J.Hopkins and C.Teleman. In this paper we redo their calculations in the framework of topological and differentiable stacks. We also show how moduli spaces of flat connections on surfaces give rise to trivializations of twists.

On quantum ergodicity for vector bundles

In the present paper we develop a framework in which questions of quantum ergodicity for operators acting on sections of hermitian vector bundles over Riemannian manifolds can be studied. We are particularly interested in the case of locally symmetric spaces. For locally symmetric spaces, we extend the recent construction of Silberman and Venkatesh (math.RT/0407413) of representation theoretic lifts to vector bundles.

Gerbes and homotopy quantum field theories

For smooth finite dimensional manifolds, we characterise gerbes with connection as functors on a certain surface cobordism category. This allows us to relate gerbes with connection to Turaev's 1+1-dimensional homotopy quantum field theories, and we show that flat gerbes are related to a specific class of rank one homotopy quantum field theories.

Transgression of the index gerbe

Recently, for a family of ungraded Dirac operators over some space $B$ J. Lott constructed an index gerbe. In the present paper we show (in analogy to the holonomy formula for the determinant bundle in the graded case) that the holonomy of the index gerbe (a priori a hermitean line bundle with connection over the free loop space $LB$) coincides with an adiabatic limit of determinant bundles of an associated family of graded Dirac operators over $LB$.

Regularity of invariant distributions

We consider a geometrically finite discrete group of conformal transformations of the sphere. Further we consider distributions which are supported on the limit set and are invariant with conformal weight. We estimate their regularity in terms of the conformal weight, the Hausdorff dimension of the limit set, and the maximal rank of the cusps of the group.

Nonexistence of invariant distributions supported on the limit set

We obtain sufficient conditions exlcuding the existence of non-trivial distribution sections of bundles over the boundary of symmetric spaces of negative curvature which are invariant with respect to a geometrically finite group of isometries and are supported on the limit set in a strong sense.

Higher analytic torsion of sphere bundles and continuous cohomology of $Diff(S^{2n-1})$

Using the higher analytic torsion form of Bismut and Lott we construct a characteristic class for smooth sphere bundles. We calculate this class in the case where the sphere bundle comes from a complex vector bundle. Related to these characteristic classes we define nontrivial continuous group cohomology classes of the diffeomorphism group of odd dimensional spheres.

Eisenstein series and Scattering matrices

We provide a simple way to obtain the meromorphic extension of Eisenstein series and Scattering matrices under conditions which generalize the case of discrete groups acting convex cocompactly on hyperbolic spaces.

$Γ$-Cohomology and the Selberg Zeta Function

We propose a new method for studying $n$- and $Γ$-cohomology of globalizations of Harish-Chandra modules, where $G=KAN$ is a rank one semisimple Lie group, $Γ$ is a discrete subgroup of $G$ and $n=Lie(N)$. We prove a conjecture of Patterson relating the singularities of Selberg zeta functions with the $Γ$-cohomology of principal series representations if $Γ$ is cocompact and torsion free.

Theta and zeta functions for odd-dimensional locally symmetric spaces of rank one

This paper is a continuation of our work on theta and zeta functions In the previous papers we considered the case of even dimensional rank one symmetric spaces of non-compact type. The present is concerned with the odd-dimensional case, i.e. with odd-dimensional real hyperbolic manifolds. It is the natural appearence of eta invariants in connection with super theta and zeta functions what makes this case particularly interesting. (authors name corrected)

A theta function for hyperbolic surfaces with cusps

For a Riemann surface with cusps we define a theta function using the eigenvalues of the Laplacian and the singularities of the scattering determinant. We provide its meromorphic continuation and discuss its singularities.
