Gravitational wave propagation through viscous matter

It has been known that gravitational waves (GWs) transfer energy to viscous matter through which they propagate, but the effect is too weak to be astrophysically significant. Using linearized perturbations about a Minkowski background, we previously showed that the interaction can become important when the distance between matter and source is smaller than the GW wavelength. Here, we review extensions to more realistic backgrounds, namely Schwarzschild spacetime and a static spherically symmetric setting. We find that GW damping and the associated heating of the viscous fluid are enhanced, and can lead to substantial attenuation or even gamma-ray bursts. We investigate astrophysical scenarios where these effects may be relevant, including core-collapse supernovae, binary neutron star mergers, and accretion onto binary black hole mergers.

Gravitational wave interactions with matter: beyond quadrupolar perturbations

Previous work has developed the theory of linearized gravitational wave (GW) interactions with matter using the Bondi-Sachs formalism, but with the perturbations restricted to be quadrupolar, i.e., the angular dependence is spherical harmonic with $\ell=2$. Here, the theory is extended to the case of GWs on a Minkowski background with general $\ell$. Formulas for the GW damping and heating effects are obtained for arbitrary $\ell\ge 2$. It is found that the effects are, generally, enhanced, and this suggests that it is unlikely that higher $\ell$-modes will be seen in GW observations of the post-merger signal of a binary neutron star merger, or of a core collapse supernova.

Smearing out contact terms in ghost-free infinite derivative quantum gravity

In the context of ghost-free infinite derivative gravity, we consider the single graviton exchange between two spinless particles, a spinless particle and a photon, or between a spinless particle and a spin-1/2 particle. To this end, we compute the gravitational potential for the three aforementioned cases and derive the $\mathcal{O}(G\hbar^2)$ correction that arises at the linearised level. In the local theory, it is well-known that such a correction appears in the form of a Dirac delta function. Here, we show that this correction is smeared out for the nonlocal theory and, in contrast to the local theory, takes on non-zero values for a non-zero separation between the two particles. In the case of the single graviton exchange between a spinless particle and a spin-1/2 particle, we also compute the $\mathcal{O}(G\hbar)$ correction that arises in the non-static case within the non-relativistic approximation and show that it is finite in the nonlocal theory.

On the interactions and equilibrium between Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton black holes

We study the interactions and the conditions for the equilibrium of forces between generic non-rotating black holes of the Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton (EMD) theory. We study known (and some new) solutions of the time-symmetric initial-data problem escribing an arbitrary number of those black holes, some of them with primary scalar hair. We show how one can distinguish between initial data corresponding to dynamical situations in which the black holes (one or many) are not in equilibrium and initial data which are just constant-time slices of a static solution of the full equations of motion describing static black holes using (self-)interaction energies. For a single black hole, non-vanishing self-interaction energy is always related to primary scalar hair and to a dynamical black hole. Removing the self-interaction energies in multi-center solutions we get interaction energies related to the attractive and repulsive forces acting on the black holes. As shown by Brill and Lindquist, for widely separated black holes, these take the standard Newtonian and Coulombian forms plus an additional interaction term associated with the scalar charges which is attractive for like charges.

Numerical solutions for the $f(R)$-Klein-Gordon system

We construct a numerical relativity code based on the Baumgarte-Shapiro-Shibata-Nakamura (BSSN) formulation for the gravitational quadratic $f(R)$ Starobinsky model. By removing the assumption that the determinant of the conformal 3-metric is unity, we first generalize the BSSN formulation for general $f(R)$ gravity theories in the metric formalism to accommodate arbitrary coordinates for the first time. We then describe the implementation of this formalism to the paradigmatic Starobinsky model. We apply the implementation to three scenarios: the Schwarzschild black hole solution, flat space with non-trivial gauge dynamics, and a massless Klein-Gordon scalar field. In each case, long-term stability and second-order convergence is demonstrated. The case of the massless Klein-Gordon scalar field is used to exercise the additional terms and variables resulting from the $f(R)$ contributions. For this model, we show for the first time that additional damped oscillations arise in the subcritical regime as the system approaches a stable configuration.

Quantum entanglement of masses with non-local gravitational interaction

We examine the quantum gravitational entanglement of two test masses in the context of linearized General Relativity with specific non-local interaction with matter. To accomplish this, we consider an energy-momentum tensor describing two test particles of equal mass with each possessing some non-zero momentum. After discussing the quantization of the linearized theory, we compute the gravitational energy shift which is operator-valued in this case. As compared to the local gravitational interaction, we find that the change in the gravitational energy due to the self-interaction terms is finite. We then move on to study the quantum gravity induced entanglement of masses for two different scenarios. The first scenario involves treating the two test masses as harmonic oscillators with an interaction Hamiltonian given by the aforesaid gravitational energy shift. In the second scenario, each of the test masses is placed in a quantum spatial superposition of two locations, based on their respective spin states, and their entanglement being induced by the gravitational interaction and the shift in the vacuum energy. For these two scenarios, we compute both the concurrence and the von Neumann entropy; showing that an increase in the non-locality of the gravitational interaction results in a decrease in both of these quantities.

Ghost-free infinite-derivative dilaton gravity in two dimensions

We present the ghost-free infinite-derivative extensions of the Spherically-Reduced Gravity (SRG) and Callan-Giddings-Harvey-Strominger (CGHS) theories in two space-time dimensions. For the case of SRG, we specify the Schwarzschild-type gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action for field perturbations after taking the background fields to be those of the flat-space solution with a linear dilaton. Using the obtained diagonalisation, we construct ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the SRG theory. In the context of this modified SRG theory we derive a non-local modification of the linearised spherically-reduced Schwarzschild solution. For the case of CGHS gravity, we work in the conformal gauge and diagonalise the quadratic action associated with this theory for a general background solution. Using these results, we construct the ghost-free infinite-derivative modifications of the CGHS theory and examine non-local modifications to the linearised CGHS black-hole solution.
