Size, shape, density, and atmospheric limit of (50000) Quaoar revealed from 14 years of stellar occultation

We present results from 28 stellar occultations by the large Trans-Neptunian Object (50000) Quaoar registered between 2018 and 2025. By performing a joint analysis of this occultation data-set, along with other 9 published events, we were able to fit an oblate ellipsoid shape, with equatorial semi-axes, a and b of 566.1+2.5-2.2 km, and a polar semi-axis, c, of 511.2+3.6-3.7 km. It provides an equivalent volumetric diameter of 1094.4 +/- 4.6 km and polar oblateness of 0.097 +/- 0.011. Considering an absolute magnitude of H = 2.79 +/- 0.35, we derive a geometric albedo of pV = 0.125 +/- 0.038. We have derived new upper limits to the surface pressure of a CH4 atmosphere of 0.15 nbar (1-sigma) and 0.65 nbar (3-sigma). We also provide a table with the 36 new astrometric positions for Quaoar. Using the new system mass derived from Weywot's orbit around Quaoar, we calculated a density of 1.760 +/- 0.109 g/cm3. Moreover, from the derived size and rotation period (8.8394 +/- 0.0002 hours (Ortiz et al. 2003)), we calculate that, if Quaoar is in Maclaurin hydrostatic equilibrium state, it would have a density of 1.859 +/- 0.200 g/cm3. This result, within the error bars, is compatible with the value we found. Therefore, this work shows that Quaoar can be a Maclaurin object, being eligible as a dwarf planet.

TIC 278956474: Two close binaries in one young quadruple system, identified by \textit{TESS}

We have identified a quadruple system with two close eclipsing binaries in TESS data. The object is unresolved in Gaia and appears as a single source at parallax 1.08~$\pm$0.01 mas. Both binaries have observable primary and secondary eclipses and were monitored throughout TESS Cycle 1 (sectors 1-13), falling within the TESS Continuous Viewing Zone. In one eclipsing binary (P = 5.488 d), the smaller star is completely occluded by the larger star during the secondary eclipse; in the other (P = 5.674 d) both eclipses are grazing. Using these data, spectroscopy, speckle photometry, SED analysis and evolutionary stellar tracks, we have constrained the masses and radii of the four stars in the two eclipsing binaries. The Li I EW indicates an age of 10-50 Myr and, with an outer period of $858^{+7}_{-5}$ days, our analysis indicates this is one of the most compact young 2+2 quadruple systems known.

A survey for variable young stars with small telescopes: II -- Mapping a protoplanetary disk with stable structures at 0.15 AU

The HOYS citizen science project conducts long term, multifilter, high cadence monitoring of large YSO samples with a wide variety of professional and amateur telescopes. We present the analysis of the light curve of V1490Cyg in the Pelican Nebula. We show that colour terms in the diverse photometric data can be calibrated out to achieve a median photometric accuracy of 0.02mag in broadband filters, allowing detailed investigations into a variety of variability amplitudes over timescales from hours to several years. Using GaiaDR2 we estimate the distance to the Pelican Nebula to be 870$^{+70}_{-55}$pc. V1490Cyg is a quasi-periodic dipper with a period of 31.447$\pm$0.011d. The obscuring dust has homogeneous properties, and grains larger than those typical in the ISM. Larger variability on short timescales is observed in U and R$_c-$H$α$, with U-amplitudes reaching 3mag on timescales of hours, indicating the source is accreting. The H$α$ equivalent width and NIR/MIR colours place V1490Cyg between CTTS/WTTS and transition disk objects. The material responsible for the dipping is located in a warped inner disk, about 0.15AU from the star. This mass reservoir can be filled and emptied on time scales shorter than the period at a rate of up to 10$^{-10}$M$_\odot$/yr, consistent with low levels of accretion in other T Tauri stars. Most likely the warp at this separation from the star is induced by a protoplanet in the inner accretion disk. However, we cannot fully rule out the possibility of an AA Tau-like warp, or occultations by the Hill sphere around a forming planet.

A Robotic Telescope For University-Level Distance Teaching

We present aspects of the deployment of a remotely operable telescope for teaching practical science to distance learning undergraduate students. We briefly describe the technical realization of the facility, PIRATE, in Mallorca and elaborate on how it is embedded in the Open University curriculum. The PIRATE teaching activities were studied as part of a wider research project into the importance of realism, sociability and meta-functionality for the effectiveness of virtual and remote laboratories in teaching practical science. We find that students accept virtual experiments (e.g. a telescope simulator) when they deliver genuine, 'messy' data, clarify how they differ from a realistic portrayal, and are flagged as training tools. A robotic telescope is accepted in place of on-site practical work when realistic activities are included, the internet connection is stable, and when there is at least one live video feed. The robotic telescope activity should include group work and facilitate social modes of learning. Virtual experiments, though normally considered as asynchronous tools, should also include social interaction. To improve student engagement and learning outcomes a greater situational awareness for the robotic telescope setting should be devised. We conclude this report with a short account of the current status of PIRATE after its relocation from Mallorca to Tenerife, and its integration into the OpenScience Observatories.

Supernova remnants and candidates detected in the XMM-Newton M31 large survey

We present the analysis of supernova remnants (SNRs) and candidates in M31 identified in the XMM-Newton large programme survey of M31. SNRs are among the bright X-ray sources in a galaxy. They are good indicators of recent star formation activities of a galaxy and of the interstellar environment in which they evolve. By combining the X-ray data of sources in M31 with optical data as well as with optical and radio catalogues, we aim to compile a complete, revised list of SNRs emitting X-rays in M31 detected with XMM-Newton, study their luminosity and spatial distribution, and understand the X-ray spectrum of the brightest SNRs. We analysed the X-ray spectra of the twelve brightest SNRs and candidates using XMM-Newton data. The four brightest sources allowed us to perform a more detailed spectral analysis and the comparison of different models to describe their spectrum. For all M31 large programme sources we searched for optical counterparts on the Ha, [Sii], and [Oiii] images of the Local Group Galaxy Survey. We confirm 21 X-ray sources as counterparts of known SNRs. In addition, we identify five new X-ray sources as X-ray and optically emitting SNRs. Seventeen sources are no longer considered as SNR candidates. We have thus created a list of 26 X-ray SNRs and 20 candidates in M31 based on their X-ray, optical, and radio emission, which is the most recent complete list of X-ray SNRs in M31. The brightest SNRs have X-ray luminosities of up to 8 x 10^36 erg/s in the 0.35 - 2.0 keV band.

A Compact Degenerate Primary-Star Progenitor of SN 2011fe

While a white dwarf is, from a theoretical perspective, the most plausible primary star in Type Ia supernova (SN Ia), many other candidates have not been formally ruled out. Shock energy deposited in the envelope of any exploding primary contributes to the early SN brightness and, since this radiation energy is degraded by expansion after the explosion, the diffusive luminosity depends on the initial primary radius. We present a new non-detection limit of the nearby SN Ia 2011fe, obtained what appears to be just 4 hours after explosion, allowing us to directly constrain the initial primary radius, R_p. Coupled with the non-detection of a quiescent X-ray counterpart and the inferred synthesized Ni mass, we show that R_p <~ 0.02 R_sun (a factor of 5 smaller than previously inferred), that the average density of the primary must be rho_p > 10,000 gm cm^{-3}, and that the effective temperature must be less than a few x 10^5 K. This rules out hydrogen burning main sequence stars and giants. Constructing the helium-burning main sequence and carbon-burning main sequence, we find such objects are also excluded. By process of elimination, we find that only degeneracy-supported compact objects---WDs and neutron stars---are viable as the primary star of SN 2011fe. With few caveats, we also restrict the companion (secondary) star radius to R_ c <~ 0.1 R_sun, excluding Roche-Lobe overflowing red giant and main-sequence companions to high significance.

Inflation after WMAP3

I discuss the current status of inflationary cosmology in light of the recent WMAP 3-year data release. The basic predictions of inflation are all supported by the data. Inflation also makes predictions which have not been well tested by current data but can be by future experiments, most notably a deviation from a scale-invariant power spectrum and the production of primordial gravitational waves. A scale-invariant spectrum is disfavored by current data, but not conclusively. Tensor modes are currently poorly constrained, and slow-roll inflation does not make an unambiguous prediction of the expected amplitude of primordial gravitational waves. A tensor/scalar ratio of $r \simeq 0.01$ is within reach of near-future measurements.

The influence of selection effects on the observed cataclysmic variable population: modelling and application to the Palomar-Green sample

Large differences between the properties of the known sample of cataclysmic variable stars (CVs) and the predictions of the theory of binary star evolution have long been recognised. However, because all existing CV samples suffer from strong selection effects, observational biases must be taken into account before it is possible to tell whether there is an inconsistency. In order to address this problem, we have modelled the impact of selection effects on observed CV samples using a Monte Carlo approach. By simulating the selection criteria of the Palomar-Green (PG) Survey, we show that selection effects cannot reconcile the predictions of standard CV evolution theory with the observed sample. More generally, we illustrate the effect of the biases that are introduced by magnitude limits, selection cuts in U-B, and restrictions in galactic latitude.

A Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables: The Final Edition

The Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables has been a staple of the CV community for over 10 years. The catalog has grown from 751 CVs in 1993 to 1600 CVs at present. The catalog became a ``living'' edition in 2001, and its contents have been continually updated since that time. Effective 27 January 2006, the catalog will transition to an archival site, with no further updates to its contents. While it is antipicated that the site will remain active, we present the complete contents of the site as a precaution against a loss of the on-line data.

Rapid rotation of ultra-Li-depleted halo stars and their association with blue stragglers

Observations of eighteen halo main-sequence-turnoff stars, four of which are extremely deficient in Li, show that three of the Li-poor ones have substantial line broadening. We attribute this to stellar rotation. Despite the great ages of halo stars, for G202-65, BD+51:1817 and Wolf 550 we infer vsini = 8.3 +/- 0.4, 7.6 +/- 0.3, and 5.5 +/- 0.6 km/s respectively. The stated errors are 3sigma. For CD-31:19466 we derive a 3sigma upper limit vsini < 2.2 km/s. The three rotating stars are known spectroscopic binaries. We explain the high rotation velocities in terms of mass and angular momentum transfer onto the surface of the turnoff star from an initially more-massive donor. Estimates of the specific angular momentum of accreted material indicate that quite small transfer masses could have been involved, though the unknown subsequent spin-down of the accretor prevents us from assigning definitive values for each star. The accretor is now seen as an ultra-Li-deficient star whose origin makes it a low-mass counterpart of field blue stragglers. The Li could have been destroyed before or during the mass-transfer episode. Such objects must be avoided in studies of the primordial Li abundance and in investigations into the way normal single stars process their initial Li.

Nova-induced mass transfer variations

We investigate variations of the mass transfer rate in cataclysmic variables (CVs) that are induced by nova outbursts. The ejection of nova shells leads to a spread of transfer rates in systems with similar orbital period. The effect is maximal if the specific angular momentum in the shell is the same as the specific orbital angular momentum of the white dwarf. We show analytically that in this case the nova-induced widening of the mass transfer rate distribution can be significant if the system, in the absence of nova outbursts, is close to mass transfer instability (i.e., within a factor of ~1.5 of the critical mass ratio). Hence the effect is negligible below the period gap and for systems with high-mass white dwarfs. At orbital periods between about 3 and 6 hrs the width of the mass transfer rate distribution exceeds an order of magnitude if the mass accreted on the white dwarf prior to the runaway is larger than a few 10^{-4} M_sun. At a given orbital period in this range, systems with the highest transfer rate should on average have the largest ratio of donor to white dwarf mass. We show results of population synthesis models which confirm and augment the analytic results.

A Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables - The Living Edition

The Catalog and Atlas of Cataclysmic Variables (Edition 1 - 1993) and Edition 2 - 1997) has been a valuable source of information for the cataclysmic variable (CV) community. However, the goal of having a central location for all objects is slowly being lost as each new edition is generated. There can also be a long time delay between new information becoming available on an object and its publication in the catalog. To eliminate these concerns, as well as to make the catalog more accessible, we have created a web site which will contain a ``living'' edition of the catalog. We have also added orbital period information, as well as finding charts for novae, to the catalog.

The violent past of Cygnus X-2

Cygnus X-2 appears to be the descendant of an intermediate-mass X-ray binary (IMXB). Using Mazzitelli's (1989) stellar code we compute detailed evolutionary sequences for the system and find that its prehistory is sensitive to stellar input parameters, in particular the amount of core overshooting during the main-sequence phase. With standard assumptions for convective overshooting a case B mass transfer starting with a 3.5 M_sun donor star is the most likely evolutionary solution for Cygnus X-2. This makes the currently observed state rather short-lived, of order 3 Myr, and requires a formation rate > 1e-7 - 1e-6 per yr of such systems in the Galaxy. Our calculations show that neutron star IMXBs with initially more massive donors (> 4 M_sun) encounter a delayed dynamical instability; they are unlikely to survive this rapid mass transfer phase. We determine limits for the age and initial parameters of Cygnus X-2 and calculate possible dynamical orbits of the system in a realistic Galactic potential, given its observed radial velocity. We find trajectories which are consistent with a progenitor binary on a circular orbit in the Galactic plane inside the solar circle that received a kick velocity < 200 km/s at the birth of the neutron star. The simulations suggests that about 7% of IMXBs receiving an arbitrary kick velocity from a standard kick velocity spectrum would end up in an orbit similar to Cygnus X-2, while about 10% of them reach yet larger Galactocentric distances.

Secondary Stars in CVs: The Theoretical Perspective

We apply the new generation of theoretical models of low-mass stars to secondaries in CVs, focussing on systems above the period gap. The models confirm that the spectral type should be a good indicator of the donor mass. The orbital period-spectral type diagram can potentially constrain the long-term mean mass transfer rate. A transfer rate that increases with decreasing period is most easily reconciled with the observational data.

Brown Dwarfs and the Cataclysmic Variable Period Minimum

Using improved, up-to-date stellar input physics tested against observations of low-mass stars and brown dwarfs we calculate the secular evolution of low-mass donor cataclysmic variables (CVs), including those which form with a brown dwarf donor. Our models confirm the mismatch between the calculated minimum period (Pmin ~ 70 min) and the observed short-period cut-off (~ 80 min) in the CV period histogram. We find that tidal and rotational corrections applied to the one-dimensional stellar structure equations have no significant effect on the period minimum. Theoretical period distributions synthesized from our model sequences always show an accumulation of systems at the minimum period, a feature absent from the observed distribution. We suggest that non-magnetic CVs become unobservable as they are effectively trapped in permanent quiescence before they reach Pmin, and that small-number statistics may hide the period spike for magnetic CVs.

The CV Period Minimum

We suggest that non-magnetic CVs become unobservable as they are effectively trapped in permanent quiescence before they reach P_min, and that small-number statistics may hide the period spike for magnetic CVs. We calculate the minimum period for high mass transfer rate sequences and discuss the relevance of these for explaining the location of CV secondaries in the orbital period - spectral type diagram. We also show that a recently suggested revised mass-radius relation for low-mass main-sequence stars cannot explain the CV period gap.

Binary evolution with relativistic jets

Relativistic jets can extract mass-energy from a black hole. In semi-detached black hole binaries the jet ejection process constitutes a `consequential angular momentum loss' (CAML) process. The effect of this jet-induced CAML is to lower the transfer rate below the value set by systemic driving and to stabilize otherwise unstable systems. Implications of jet-induced CAML for GRO J1655-40 are discussed.
