Electroweak form factors of non-strange baryons

We compute electroweak form factors of the nucleon and photon transition form factors of non-strange baryon resonances up to the third resonance region in a model with instanton-induced interaction. The calculation is based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation for three light constituent quarks and is fully relativistic (U. Löring {\it et al.}, Eur. Phys. J. {\bf A10}, 309 (2001)). Static nucleon properties and photon resonance couplings are in good agreement with experiment and the $Q^2$-behaviour of the experimentally known form factors up to large momentum transfer is accounted for.

A relativistic quark model of baryons

On the basis of the three-particle Bethe-Salpeter equation we formulated a relativistic quark model for baryons. Assuming the propagators to be given by their free form with constituent quark masses and the interaction kernel by an instantaneous potential, which contains a string-like parameterization of confinement and a flavor dependent interaction motivated by instanton effects we can account for the major features in the baryon spectrum, such as the low position of the Roper resonance and the occurrence of approximate parity doublets apparent in the Nucleon- and Lambda-spectra.

Parity Doublets from a Relativistic Quark Model

The Nucleon- and the Lambda-excitation spectrum exhibit parity doublets, i.e. states of the same spin but with opposite parity being almost degenerate in mass. It is shown that in a relativistic quark model with instantaneous interaction kernels, where confinement is implemented by a linearly rising potential and the major mass splittings are generated from an interaction based on instanton effects, this degeneracy occurs quite naturally: Once the parameters of the instanton induced interaction are fixed to reproduce the ground state octet-decuplet splittings, some states are selectively lowered to a position which is degenerate with states of opposite parity. Some observable consequences are briefly discussed.

The light baryon spectrum in a relativistic quark model with instanton-induced quark forces I. The non-strange baryon spectrum and ground-states

This is the second of a series of three papers treating light baryon resonances up to 3 GeV within a relativistically covariant quark model based on the three-fermion Bethe-Salpeter equation with instantaneous two- and three-body forces. In this paper we apply the covariant Salpeter framework (which we developed in the first paper) to specific quark model calculations. Quark confinement is realized by a linearly rising three-body string potential with appropriate spinorial structures in Dirac-space. To describe the hyperfine structure of the baryon spectrum we adopt 't Hooft's residual interaction based on QCD-instanton effects and demonstrate that the alternative one-gluon-exchange is disfavored phenomenological grounds. Our fully relativistic framework allows to investigate the effects of the full Dirac structures of residual and confinement forces on the structure of the mass spectrum. In the present paper we present a detailed analysis of the complete non-strange baryon spectrum and show that several prominent features of the nucleon spectrum such as e.g. the Roper resonance and approximate ''parity doublets'' can be uniformly explained due to a specific interplay of relativistic effects, the confinement potential and 't Hooft's force. The results for the spectrum of strange baryons will be discussed in a subsequent paper.

The light baryon spectrum in a relativistic quark model with instanton-induced quark forces II. The strange baryon spectrum

This is the third of a series of papers treating light baryon resonances up to 3 GeV within a relativistically covariant quark model based on the Bethe-Salpeter equation with instantaneous two- and three-body forces. In this last paper we extend our previous work on non-strange baryons to a prediction of the complete strange baryon spectrum and a detailed comparison with experiment. We apply our covariant Salpeter framework to specific quark models as introduced in the two preceding papers. Quark confinement is realized by linearly rising three-body string potentials with appropriate Dirac structures; to describe the hyperfine structure of the baryon spectrum we adopt 't Hooft's two-quark residual interaction based on QCD instanton effects. The investigation of instanton-induced effects in the baryon mass spectrum plays a central role in this work. We demonstrate that several prominent features of the excited strange mass spectrum, e.g. the low positions of the strange partners of the Roper resonance or the appearance of approximate ''parity doublets'' in the Lambda-spectrum, find a natural, uniform explanation in our relativistic quark model with instanton-induced forces.

Relativistic quark models of baryons with instantaneous forces

This is the first of a series of three papers treating light baryon resonances (up to 3 GeV) within a relativistically covariant quark model based on the three-fermion Bethe-Salpeter equation with instantaneous two- and three-body forces. In this paper we give a unified description of the theoretical background and demonstrate how to solve the Bethe-Salpeter equation by a reduction to the Salpeter equation. The specific new features of our covariant Salpeter model with respect to the usual nonrelativistic quark model are discussed in detail. The purely theoretical results obtained in this paper will be applied numerically to explicit quark models for light baryons in two subsequent papers.
