One pion production in neutrino reactions: including non-resonant background

We investigate neutrino induced one pion production on nucleons. The elementary neutrino--nucleon cross section is calculated as the sum of the leading Delta pole diagram and several background diagrams obtained within the non-linear sigma model. This approach does not introduce any new adjustable parameters, which allows unambiguous predictions for the observables. Considering electroproduction experiments as benchmark, the model is shown to be applicable up to pion-nucleon invariant mass $W<1.4\GeV$ and provides a good accuracy. With respect to the total one pion cross section, the model predicts the background at the level of $=10% for the $pπ^+$, 30% for $pπ^0$ and 50% for $nπ^+$ final states. The results are compared with experimental data for various differential cross sections. Distributions with respect to muon-nucleon and muon-pion invariant masses are presented for the first time. The model describes the data quite well, with the discrepancies being of the same order as those between different data sets.

Hadrons in strongly interacting matter

We review the current status of theories and experiments aiming at an understanding and a determination of the properties of light vector and scalar mesons inside strongly interacting hadronic matter. Starting from a discussion of the relevant symmetries of QCD and their connection with the hadronic description through QCD sum rules we then discuss hadronic models used to calculate the in-medium self-energies of hadrons and their spectral functions. The difficulties to link these calculated properties to actual observables are emphasized. Finally, we review in detail all the running experiments searching for in-medium changes of vector and scalar mesons, both with relativistic heavy-ion reactions as well as with elementary reactions on (cold) nuclei. Inconsistencies among experimental results are discussed. While almost all experiments observe a considerable broadening of vector mesons inside the nuclear medium, no evidence for mass changes is observed in the majority of the experiments.

Phenomenological model for the Drell-Yan process: Reexamined

Drell-Yan pair production is investigated. We reexamine a model where the quark momentum fraction is defined as the ratio of the corresponding light cone components of the quark and parent nucleon in a naive parton-model approach. It is shown that results differ from the standard parton model. This is due to unphysical solutions for the momentum fractions within the naive approach which are not present in the standard parton model. In a calculation employing full quark kinematics, i.e. including primordial quark transverse momentum, these solutions also appear. A prescription is given to handle these solutions in order to avoid misleading results. The impact of these solutions in the full kinematical approach is demonstrated and compared to the modified result.

Deep exclusive charged $π$ electroproduction above the resonance region

A description of exclusive charged pion electroproduction $(e,e'π^{\pm})$ off nucleons at high energies is proposed. The model combines a Regge pole approach with residual effect of nucleon resonances. The exchanges of $π$(140), vector $ρ(770)$ and axial-vector $a_1(1260)$ and $b_1(1235)$ Regge trajectories are considered. The contribution of nucleon resonances is described using a dual connection between the exclusive hadronic form factors and inclusive deep inelastic structure functions. The model describes the measured longitudinal, transverse and interference cross sections at JLAB and DESY. The scaling behavior of the cross sections is in agreement with JLAB and deeply virtual HERMES data. The results for a polarized beam-spin azimuthal asymmetry in $(\vec{e},e'π^{\pm})$ are presented. Model predictions for JLAB at 12 GeV are given.

Deep exclusive electroproduction of $π^+$ at HERMES

Deeply virtual electroproduction of pion in exclusive reaction $p(e,e'π^+)n$ is studied using a two-component model which includes soft hadronic and hard partonic reaction mechanisms. The results are compared with the experimental data measured at HERMES in the deep inelastic region for values of $Q^2>1$ GeV$^2$ and $W^2 > 10$ GeV$^2$. At forward angles the $π^+$ cross section is longitudinal and is dominated by exchange of Regge poles, with $π$ the dominant trajectory. The off-forward region with $-t>1$ GeV$^2$ is transverse and shows the dominance of partonic subprocesses. An implication of present results for the future JLAB facilities are briefly discussed.

Pionic transparency in semi-exclusive electroproduction off nuclei

We investigate the early onset of pionic color transparency ($π$CT) observed at Jefferson Laboratory (JLAB) in semi--exclusive pion electroproduction reaction $A(e,e'π^+)$ off nuclei. In the present description the primary $γ^*p \to π^+ n$ interaction is described very well both for the longitudinal and the transverse polarizations. For the final state interactions a coupled--channel treatment of the interactions of transmitted hadrons allows to go beyond the Glauber approximation. We show that a proper distinction between the soft hadronic and hard partonic components of the electroproduction amplitude is essential for a quantitative description of the measured nuclear transparency. The data are well reproduced if one assumes that point--like configurations are produced in the regime of hard deep--inelastic scattering (DIS) off partons and dominate the transverse channel.

Deeply inelastic pions in the exclusive reaction $p(e,e'π^+)n$ above the resonance region

A model for the $p(e,e'π^+)n$ reaction which combines an improved treatment of gauge invariant meson--exchange currents and hard deep--inelastic scattering (DIS) of virtual photons off nucleons is proposed. It is shown that DIS dominates and explains the transverse response at moderate and high photon virtualities $Q^2$ whereas the longitudinal response is dominated by hadronic degrees of freedom and the pion electromagnetic form factor. This leads to a combined description of the longitudinal and transverse components of the cross section in a wide range of photon virtuality $Q^2$ and momentum transfer to the target $t$ and solves the longstanding problem of the observed large transverse cross sections. The latter are shown to be sensitive to the intrinsic transverse momentum distribution of partons.

Hadrons in Medium -- Theory meets Experiment

In this talk I give a short review of theoretical results on the properties of hadrons in cold, equilibrium nuclear matter. I then discuss the observable consequences of any changes of these properties inside the medium in actual experiments. I demonstrate that any experimental verification of in-medium effects requires a state-of-the-art treatment of the reaction dynamics and, in particular, also the final state interactions.

Chiral Symmetry in Nuclei -- Theoretical Expectations and Hard Facts

It is widely believed that chiral symmetry is restored not only at high temperatures, but also at high nuclear densities. The drop of the order parameter of the chiral phase transition, the chiral condensate, with density has indeed been calculated in various models and is as such a rather robust result. In this talk I point out that the connection of this property with actual observables is far less clear. For this task a good hadronic description of the primary production of hadrons, their propagation inside the nuclear medium, their decay and the propagation of the decay products through the medium to the detector all have to be treated with equal accuracy and weight. In this talk I illustrate with the examples of $ω$ production and $π^0π^0$ production how important in particular final state interactions are.

Hadrons in Medium -- Theory confronts experiment

In this talk we briefly summarize our theoretical understanding of in-medium selfenergies of hadrons. With the special case of the $ω$ meson we demonstrate that earlier calculations that predicted a significant lowering of the mass in medium are based on an incorrect treatment of the model Lagrangian; more consistent calculations lead to a significant broadening, but hardly any mass shift. We stress that the experimental reconstruction of hadron spectral functions from measured decay products always requires knowledge of the decay branching ratios which may also be strongly mass-dependent. It also requires a quantitatively reliable treatment of final state interactions which has to be part of any reliable theory.

Omega mesons in medium - revisited

Recent experimental observation by the CBELSA/TAPS collaboration indicates a downward mass shift of the $ω$ meson when put into a nuclear medium. Therefore it is worthwhile to take a look at theoretical approaches that can describe this mass shift. One such hadronic model was introduced by Klingl et al. (Nucl.Phys. A650:299-312). We will demonstrate that the heavy baryon limit approximation used there has no justification and returns wrong results. The results obtained with a correct treatment of the relevant $2π$-channel lead to unreasonable results for the $ω$ selfenergy in medium.

Low-energy pions in nuclear matter and 2pi photoproduction within a BUU transport model

A description of low-energy scattering of pions and nuclei within a BUU transport model is presented. Implementing different scenarios of medium modifications, the mean free path of pions in nuclear matter at low momenta and pion absorption reactions on nuclei have been studied and compared to data and to results obtained via quantum mechanical scattering theory. We show that even in a regime of a long pionic wave length the semi-classical transport model is still a reliable framework for pion kinetic energies greater than ~20-30 MeV. Results are presented on pion-absorption cross sections in the regime of 10 MeV < E(kin) < 130 MeV and on photon-induced double-pion production at incident beam energies of 400-500 MeV.

In-medium Hadrons - Properties, Interaction and Formation

In this talk various aspects of in-medium behavior of hadrons are discussed with an emphasis on observable effects. Examples for theoretical predictions of in-medium spectral functions are given and the importance of resonance-hole excitations is stressed. It is also stressed that final state interactions can have a major effect on observables and thus have to be considered as part of the theory. This is demonstrated with examples from neutrino-nucleus interactions. Finally, the possibility to access hadron formation times in high-energy photonuclear (or neutrino-induced) reactions is illustrated.

Interactions of multi-quark states in the chromodielectric model

We investigate 4-quark ($qq\bar{q}\bar{q}$) systems as well as multi-quark states with a large number of quarks and anti-quarks using the chromodielectric model. In the former type of systems the flux distribution and the corresponding energy of such systems for planar and non-planar geometries are studied. From the comparison to the case of two independent $q\bar{q}$-strings we deduce the interaction potential between two strings. We find an attraction between strings and a characteristic string flip if there are two degenerate string combinations between the four particles. The interaction shows no strong Van-der-Waals forces and the long range behavior of the potential is well described by a Yukawa potential, which might be confirmed in future lattice calculations. The multi-quark states develop an inhomogeneous porous structure even for particle densities large compared to nuclear matter constituent quark densities. We present first results of the dependence of the system on the particle density pointing towards a percolation type of transition from a hadronic matter phase to a quark matter phase. The critical energy density is found at $ε_c = 1.2 GeV/fm^3$.

Low-energy pions in nuclear matter and pi pi photoproduction within a BUU transport model

In the present paper we investigate a method to describe low-energy scattering events of pions and nuclei within a Boltzmann-Uehling-Uhlenbeck (BUU) transport model. Implementing different scenarios of medium modifications, we studied the mean free path of pions in nuclear matter at low momenta and compared pion absorption simulations to data. Pursuing these studies we have shown, that also in a regime of a long pionic wave length the semi-classical BUU model still generates reasonable results. We present results on pi-induced events in the regime of 10 MeV < Tkin < 130 MeV and photo-induced pi pi production at incident beam energies of 400-460 MeV.

Two- and three-body color flux tubes in the Chromo Dielectric Model

Using the framework of the Chromo Dielectric Model we perform an analysis of color electric flux tubes in meson-like $q\bar{q}$ and baryon-like $qqq$ quark configurations. We discuss the Abelian color structure of the model and point out a symmetry in color space as a remnant of the SU(3) symmetry of QCD. The generic features of the model are discussed by varying the model parameters. We fix these parameters by reproducing the string tension $τ=980 $MeV/fm and the transverse width $ρ=0.35 $fm of the $q\bar{q}$ flux tube obtained in lattice calculations. We use a bag constant $B^{1/4}=(240-260) $MeV, a glueball mass $m_g = (1000-1700) $MeV and a strong coupling constant $C_F α_s = 0.2-0.3$. We show that the asymptotic string profile of an infinitely long flux tube is already reached for $q\bar{q}$ separations $R\ge1.0 $fm. A connection to the Dual Color Superconductor is made by extracting a magnetic current from the model equations and a qualitative agreement between the two descriptions of confinement is shown. In the study of the $qqq$ system we observe a $\mathsfΔ$-like geometry for the color electric fields and a \textsf{Y}-like geometry in the scalar fields both in the energy density distribution and in the corresponding potentials. The resulting total $qqq$ potential is described neither by the $\mathsfΔ$-picture nor by the \textsf{Y}-picture alone.
