Gluino-mediated FCNCs in the MSSM with large tan(beta)

We present results of our study of tan(beta)-enhanced loop corrections in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) with Minimal Flavour Violation (MFV). We demonstrate that these corrections induce flavour changing neutral current (FCNC) gluino couplings which have a large impact on the Wilson coefficient C_8 of the chromomagnetic operator. To illustrate the phenomenological consequences of this gluino-squark contribution to C_8, we briefly discuss its effect on the mixing-induced CP asymmetry in the decay B_d -> phi K_S.

Three Lectures on Meson Mixing and CKM phenomenology

I give an introduction to the theory of meson-antimeson mixing, aiming at students who plan to work at a flavour physics experiment or intend to do associated theoretical studies. I derive the formulae for the time evolution of a neutral meson system and show how the mass and width differences among the neutral meson eigenstates and the CP phase in mixing are calculated in the Standard Model. Special emphasis is laid on CP violation, which is covered in detail for K mixing, Bd mixing and Bs mixing. I explain the constraints on the apex (rho-bar,eta-bar) of the unitarity triangle implied by epsilon_K, Delta m_{B_d}, Delta m_{B_d}/(Delta m_{B_s}) and various mixing-induced CP asymmetries such as a_CP(Bd-bar -> J/psi K_short)(t). The impact of a future measurement of CP violation in flavour-specific Bd decays is also shown.

The supersymmetric Higgs sector and B-Bbar mixing for large tan beta

We match the Higgs sector of the most general flavour breaking and CP violating minimal supersymmetric standard model (MSSM) onto a generic two-Higgs-doublet model, paying special attention to the definition of tan beta in the effective theory. In particular no tan beta-enhanced loop corrections appear in the relation to tan beta defined in the DRbar scheme in the MSSM. The corrections to the Higgs-mediated flavour-changing amplitudes which result from this matching are especially relevant for the B_d and B_s mass differences dM_s,d for minimal flavour violation, where the superficially leading contribution vanishes. We give a symmetry argument to explain this cancellation and perform a systematic study of all Higgs-mediated effects, including Higgs loops. The corrections to dM_s are at most 7% for mu>0 and M_A < 600 if constraints from other observables are taken into account. For mu<0 they can be larger, but are always less than about 20%. Contrary to recent claims we do not find numerically large contributions here, nor do we find any tan beta-enhanced contributions from loop corrections to the Higgs potential in B^+ -> tau^+ nu or B -> X_s gamma. We further update supersymmetric loop corrections to the Yukawa couplings, where we include all possible CP-violating phases and correct errors in the literature. The possible presence of CP-violating phases generated by Higgs exchange diagrams is briefly discussed as well. Finally we provide improved values for the bag factors P^VLL_1, P^LR_2, and P^SLL_1 at the electroweak scale.

Higgs hunting with B decays

B physics is sensitive to the effects of Higgs bosons in the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model, if the parameter tan beta is large. I briefly summarise the role of B -> mu+ mu- and B -> tau nu in the hunt for new Higgs effects and present new results on the decay B -> D tau nu: Using the analyticity properties of form factors one can predict the ratio R=Br(B -> D tau nu)/Br(B -> D l nu), l=e,mu, with small hadronic uncertainties. In the Standard Model one finds R= 0.31 +/- 0.02, Br(B^- -> D^0 tau^- anti-nu) = (0.71 +/- 0.09)% and Br(anti-B^0 -> D^+ tau^- anti-nu)= (0.66 +/- 0.08)%, if the vector form factor of the Heavy Flavor Averaging Group is used. B -> D tau nu is competitive with B -> tau nu in the search for effects of charged Higgs bosons. Especially sensitive to the latter is the differential distribution in the decay chain anti-B -> D anti-nu tau^-[->pi- nu].

Tan(beta)-enhanced supersymmetric corrections to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon

We report on a two-loop supersymmetric contribution to the magnetic moment (g-2)_mu of the muon which is enhanced by two powers of tan(beta). This contribution arises from a shift in the relation between the muon mass and Yukawa coupling and can increase the supersymmetric contribution to (g-2)_mu sizably. As a result, if the currently observed 3 sigma deviation between the experimental and SM theory value of (g-2)_mu is analyzed within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM), the derived constraints on the parameter space are modified significantly: If (g-2)_mu is used to determine tan(beta) as a function of the other MSSM parameters, our corrections decrease tan(beta) by roughly 10% for tan(beta)=50.

Charged-Higgs effects in a new B -> D tau nu differential decay distribution

We show that the decay mode B -> D tau nu is competitive with and complementary to B -> tau nu in the search for charged-Higgs effects. Updating the relevant form factors, we find that the differential distribution in the decay chain B -> D nu tau[-> pi nu] excellently discriminates between Standard-Model and charged-Higgs contributions. By measuring the D and pi energies and the angle between the D and pi three-momenta one can determine the effective charged-Higgs coupling including a possible CP-violating phase.

Theoretical update of Bs-Bs-bar mixing

We update the theory predictions for the mass difference $\dm_s$, the width difference $\dg_s$ and the CP asymmetry in flavour-specific decays, $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$, for the \bbs system. In particular we present a new expression for the element $Γ_{12}^s$ of the decay matrix, which enters the predictions of $\dg_s$ and $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$. To this end we introduce a new operator basis, which reduces the troublesome sizes of the $1/m_b$ and $α_s$ corrections and diminishes the hadronic uncertainty in $\dg_s/\dm_s$ considerably. Logarithms of the charm quark mass are summed to all orders. We find $\dg_s/\dm_s= (49.7 \pm 9.4) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $\dg_s =(f_{B_s}/240 {\rm MeV})^2 [(0.105 \pm 0.016) B + (0.024 \pm 0.004) \tilde{B}_S' - 0.027 \pm 0.015] {ps}^{-1}$ in terms of the bag parameters $B$, $\tilde{B}_S'$ in the NDR scheme and the decay constant $f_{B_s}$. The improved result for $Γ_{12}^s$ also permits the extraction of the CP-violating \bbms phase from $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$ with better accuracy. We show how the measurements of $ΔM_s$, $ΔΓ_s$, $a_{\rm fs}^{s}$, $A_{\rm CP}^{\rm mix}(B_s\to J/ψϕ)$ and other observables can be efficiently combined to constrain new physics. Applying our new formulae to data from the DØexperiment, we find a 2$σ$ deviation of the \bbms phase from its Standard Model value. We also briefly update the theory predictions for the \bbd system and find $\dg_d/\dm_d = \lt(52.6 \epm{11.5}{12.8} \rt) \cdot 10^{-4}$ and $a_{\rm fs}^d = \lt(-4.8\epm{1.0}{1.2} \rt) \cdot 10^{-4}$ in the Standard Model.

B_d and B_s mixing: mass and width differences and CP violation

B-B-bar mixing involves three physical parameters: the magnitudes of the off-diagonal elements of the mass and decay matrices and their relative phase. They are related to the mass and width differences between the mass eigenstates and to the CP asymmetry in flavour-specific decays, a_fs. Introducing a new operator basis I present new, more precise theory predictions for the width differences in the B_s and B_d systems: in the Standard Model one finds Delta Gamma_s = 0.088 +/- 0.017 ps^{-1} and Delta Gamma_d = (26.7 +5.8/-6.5) * 10^{-4} ps^{-1}. Updates of the mass differences Delta M_d and Delta M_s and of a_{fs}^d and a_{fs}^s are also presented. Then I discuss how various present and future measurements can be combined to constrain new physics. The extraction of a new CP phase phi_s^Delta from data on a_{fs}^s also profits from our new operator basis. Confronting our new formulae with D0 data we find that sin phi_s^Delta deviates from zero by 2 sigma.

Bounds on new physics from B_s mixing

I summarize the observables constraining the B_s-B_s-bar mixing complex and present a new calculation of the element Gamma_{12}^s of the decay matrix. Gamma_{12}^s enters the prediction of the width difference Delta Gamma_s, for which we obtain Delta Gamma_s^SM = 0.088 +/- 0.017 ps^(-1), if no new physics enters B_s-B_s-bar mixing. Applying our formulae to Tevatron data we find a deviation of the B_s-B_s-bar mixing phase phi_s from its Standard Model value by 2 standard deviations. I stress that present data do not give any information on the sign of Delta Gamma_s.

CP asymmetry in flavour-specific B decays

I first discuss the phenomenology of a^q_fs (q=d,s), which is the CP asymmetry in flavour-specific B_q decays such as B_d -> X l^+ nu-bar_l or B_s -> D_s^- pi^+. a^q_fs can be obtained from the time evolution of any untagged B_q decay. Then I present recently calculated next-to-leading-order QCD corrections to a_fs^q, which reduce the renormalisation scheme uncertainties significantly. For the Standard Model we predict a^d_fs=-(5.0 +/- 1.1)*10^(-4) and a^s_fs= (2.1 +/-0.4)*10^-5. As a by-product we determine the ratio of the width difference in the B_d system and the average B_d width to (Delta Gamma_d)/Gamma_d = (3.0 +/- 1.2)*10^(-3) at next-to-leading order in QCD.

Quark mixing and CP violation - the CKM matrix

I present the status of the elements and parameters of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa (CKM) matrix and summarise the related theoretical progress since "Lepton-Photon 2003". One finds |V_{us}| = 0.2227 +/- 0.0017 from K and tau decays and |V_{cb}| = (41.6 +/- 0.5) * 10^{-3} from inclusive semileptonic B decays. The unitarity triangle can now be determined from tree-level quantities alone and the result agrees well with the global fit including flavour-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes, which are sensitive to new physics. From the global fit one finds the three CKM angles theta_{12}=12.9 +/- 0.1 degrees, theta_{23}= 2.38 +/- 0.03 degrees and theta_{13}= 0.223 +/- 0.007 degrees in the standard PDG convention. The CP phase equals delta_{13} = gamma = (58.8 +5.3/-5.8) degrees at 1 sigma CL and gamma=(58.8 +11.2/-15.4) degrees at 2 sigma CL. A major progress are first results from fully unquenched lattice QCD computations for the hadronic quantities entering the UT fit. I further present the calculation of three-loop QCD corrections to the charm contribution in K+ -> pi+ nu nu-bar decays, which removes the last relevant theoretical uncertainty from the K -> pi nu nu-bar system. Finally I discuss mixing-induced CP asymmetries in b -> s q-bar q penguin decays, whose naive average is below its Standard Model value by 3 sigma.

Hadronic vs leptonic flavor and CP violation in SUSY SO(10)

We study hadronic and leptonic flavor physics in a SUSY SO(10) model proposed by Chang, Masiero, and Murayama, which links b -> s transitions to the observed large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle. We find large effects in B_s-B_s-bar mixing and BR(tau -> mu gamma) and comment on B_d -> phi K_S.

B_s-B_s-bar mixing in an SO(10) SUSY GUT model

We perform a renormalisation group analysis of the SO(10) model proposed by Chang, Masiero and Murayama, which links the large atmospheric neutrino mixing angle to loop-induced transitions between right-handed b and s quarks. We compute the impact on B_s-B_s-bar mixing and find that the mass difference in the B_s system can exceed its Standard Model value by a factor of 16.

Higgs Sector of the Minimal Left-Right Symmetric Model

We perform an exhaustive analysis of the most general Higgs sector of the minimal left-right symmetric model (MLRM). We find that the CP properties of the vacuum state are connected to the Higgs spectrum: if CP is broken spontaneously, the MLRM does not approach the Standard Model in the limit of a decoupling left-right symmetry breaking scale. Depending on the size of the CP phases scenarios with extra non-decoupling flavor-violating doublet Higgses or very light SU(2) triplet Higgses emerge, both of which are ruled out by phenomenology. For zero CP phases the non-standard Higgses decouple only if a very unnatural fine-tuning condition is fulfilled. We also discuss generalizations to a non-minimal Higgs sector.

In Pursuit of New Physics with B_s Decays

The presence of a sizeable CP-violating phase in B_s^0-B_s^0-bar mixing would be an unambiguous signal of physics beyond the Standard Model. We analyse various possibilities to detect such a new phase considering both tagged and untagged decays. The effects of a sizeable width difference Delta Gamma between the B_s mass eigenstates, on which the untagged analyses rely, are included in all formulae. A novel method to find this phase from simple measurements of lifetimes and branching ratios in untagged decays is proposed. This method does not involve two-exponential fits, which require much larger statistics. For the tagged decays, an outstanding role is played by the observables of the time-dependent angular distribution of the B_s -> J/psi [-> l^+ l^-] ϕ[-> K^+K^-] decay products. We list the formulae needed for the angular analysis in the presence of both a new CP-violating phase and a sizeable Delta Gamma, and propose methods to remove a remaining discrete ambiguity in the new phase. This phase can therefore be determined in an unambiguous way.

QCD corrections to lifetime differences of B_s mesons

The calculation of QCD corrections to the width difference Delta Gamma in the B_s meson system is presented. The next-to-leading order corrections reduce the dependence on the renormalization scale significantly and allow for a meaningful use of hadronic matrix elements from lattice gauge theory. At present the uncertainty of the lattice calculations limits the prediction of Delta Gamma. The presented work has been performed in collaboration with Martin Beneke, Gerhard Buchalla, Christoph Greub and Alexander Lenz.

Probing Light Sbottoms with B Decays

We discuss recently reported experimental hints for a bottom squark with mass around 3.5 GeV decaying as sbottom -> charm + lepton + anti-sneutrino. We correlate the sbottom lifetime with the decay rates for bottom -> sbottom + neutrino + anti-sneutrino and bottom -> sbottom + anti-neutrino + sneutrino in the framework of a minimal supersymmetric model extended by right-handed (s)neutrinos. Confronting our results with the well-measured semileptonic branching ratio of B mesons we conclude that the light sbottom interpretation of the experimental anomalies is ruled out, unless m_bottom < m_sbottom + m_sneutrino.
