Giant thermopower changes related to the resistivity maximum and colossal magnetoresistance in EuCd2P2

We present the thermopower of EuCd2P2, a material which exhibits a large resistivity peak with significant magnetic field dependence in the temperature range of 10-25 K. In the same region we observe a highly unusual behavior of the thermopower with two sign changes and giant extrema. The overall variation of the thermopower exceeds 4 000 muV/K and takes place in an extremely narrow temperature region of less than 5 K. The anomaly is suppressed completely in a small magnetic field of 0.5 T. We discuss this observation using a simple drift-diffusion picture and taking into account that the temperature gradient inducing the thermopower voltage is accompanied by a gradient of the electrical resistivity. Our simple estimation yields the correct magnitude, shape, and field dependence of the thermopower anomaly observed in EuCd2P2. These results open a new route to giant thermopower values via gradients of electronic properties.

Low-temperature thermal conductivity of the substrate material YAlO3 and its unconventional sister compound YbAlO3

We present thermal conductivity data on single crystals of YAlO3 and YbAlO3 for temperatures between 2 K and 300 K and the heat current along b and c. Both materials are very good thermal conductors in the investigated temperature range. The thermal conductivity in these electrical insulators is due to phonons. The effect of Y-Yb exchange is found to be rather small despite the considerable difference in density and average atomic mass. For YAlO3 we find a moderate thermal conductivity anisotropy with weak temperature dependence and a ratio of c to b direction between at most 1 and 2.2. It is discussed with regard to the velocities of sound and relevant scattering processes. For YbAlO3 the small crystal size limits the precision of absolute thermal conductivity values and does not allow drawing conclusions on the anisotropy. Our results on YAlO3 confirm that the material is suitable for applications requiring a good thermal conductivity at temperatures down to liquid helium, such as lasers, substrates, and detectors.

Physical properties of the ferromagnetic quantum critical system YbNi$_4$(P$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$)$_2$

We report on single crystal growth and physical properties of the quantum critical Kondo-lattice system YbNi$_4$(P$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$)$_2$ with $0\leq x\leq 1$ which hosts a ferromagnetic quantum critical point at $x \approx 0.1$. We performed measurements of the magnetization, electrical resistivity, thermopower, heat capacity, and resonant X-ray emission spectroscopy. Arsenic substitution leads to a homogeneous increase of the unit-cell volume, with well-defined As-concentrations in large parts of the single crystals. All data consistently show that with increasing $x$ the Kondo temperature increases, while the magnetic anisotropy observed at low $x$ fully vanishes towards $x=1$. Consequently, at low temperatures, the system shows a crossover from pronounced non-Fermi liquid behaviour for $x \leq 0.2$ to a Fermi liquid behavior for $x > 0.2$ with weak correlations. There is a continuous change in Yb valence from nearly trivalent at low $x$ to a slightly lower value for $x = 0.6$, which correlates with the Kondo temperature. Interestingly, specific heat measurements at very low temperatures show that $C/T$ strongly increases towards lower $T$ for $x = 0.13$ and $x = 0.2$ with a very similar power law. This suggests that in YbNi$_4$(P$_{1-x}$As$_{x}$)$_2$ a quantum critical region rather than a quantum critical point might exist.

Magnetic Phase Diagram of Rouaite, Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$

Spinon-magnon mixing was recently reported in botallackite Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$Br with a uniaxially compressed triangular lattice of Cu$^{2+}$ quantum spins [Zhang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 125, 037204 (2020)]. Its nitrate counterpart rouaite, Cu$_2$(OH)$_3$NO$_3$, has a highly analogous structure and might be expected to exhibit similar physics. To lay a foundation for research on this material, we clarify rouaite's magnetic phase diagram and identify both low-field phases. The low-temperature magnetic state consists of alternating ferro- and antiferromagnetic chains, as in botallackite, but with additional canting, leading to net moments on all chains which rotate from one chain to another to form a 90$^\circ$ cycloidal pattern. The higher-temperature phase is a helical modulation of this order, wherein the spins rotate from one Cu plane to the next. This extends to zero temperature for fields perpendicular to the chains, leading to a set of low-temperature field-induced phase transitions. Rouaite may offer another platform for spinon-magnon mixing, while our results suggest a delicate balance of interactions and high tunability of the magnetism.

Low-Temperature Thermal Conductivity of CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$

CeRh$_2$As$_2$ is a rare unconventional superconductor ($T_c=0.26$ K) characterized by two adjacent superconducting phases for a magnetic field $H \parallel c$-axis of the tetragonal crystal structure. Antiferromagnetic order, quadrupole-density-wave order ($T_0 = 0.4$ K) and the proximity of this material to a quantum-critical point have also been reported: The coexistence of these phenomena with superconductivity is currently under discussion. Here, we present thermal conductivity and electrical resistivity measurements on a single crystal of CeRh$_2$As$_2$ between 60 mK and 200 K and in magnetic fields ($H \parallel c$) up to 8 T. Our measurements at low $T$ verify the Wiedemann-Franz law within the error bars. The $T$ dependence of the thermal conductivity $κ(T)$ shows a pronounced drop below $T_c$ which is also field dependent and thus interpreted as the signature of superconductivity. However, the large residual resistivity and the lack of sharp anomalies in $κ(T)$ at the expected transition temperatures clearly indicate that samples of much higher purity are required to gain more information about the superconducting gap structure.

Valence effect on the thermopower of Eu systems

We investigated the thermoelectric transport properties of EuNi2P2 and EuIr2Si2 in order to evaluate the relevance of Kondo interaction and valence fluctuations in these materials. While the thermal conductivities behave conventionally, the thermopower curves exhibit large values with pronounced maxima as typically observed in Ce- and Yb-based heavy-fermion materials. However, neither the positions of these maxima nor the absolute thermopower values at low temperature are in line with the heavy-fermion scenario and the moderately enhanced effective charge carrier masses. Instead, we may relate the thermopower in our materials to the temperature-dependent Eu valence by taking into account changes in the chemical potential. Our analysis confirms that valence fluctuations play an important role in EuNi2P2 and EuIr2Si2.

Superconducting gap structure of the skutterudite LaPt4Ge12 probed by specific heat and thermal transport

We investigated the superconducting order parameter of the filled skutterudite LaPt4Ge12, with a transition temperature of Tc = 8.3 K. To this end, we performed temperature and magnetic-field dependent specific-heat and thermal-conductivity measurements. All data are compatible with a single superconducting s-wave gap. However, a multiband scenario cannot be ruled out. The results are discussed in the context of previous studies on the substitution series Pr1-xLaxPt4Ge12. They suggest compatible order parameters for the two end compounds LaPt4Ge12 and PrPt4Ge12. This is not consistent with a single s-wave gap in LaPt4Ge12 considering previous reports of unconventional and/or multiband superconductivity in PrPt4Ge12.

Giant isotropic Nernst effect in an anisotropic Kondo semimetal

The "failed Kondo insulator" CeNiSn has long been suspected to be a nodal metal, with a node in the hybridization matrix elements. Here we carry out a series of Nernst effect experiments to delineate whether the severely anisotropic magnetotransport coefficients do indeed derive from a nodal metal or can simply be explained by a highly anisotropic Fermi surface. Our experiments reveal that despite an almost 20-fold anisotropy in the Hall conductivity, the large Nernst signal is isotropic. Taken in conjunction with the magnetotransport anisotropy, these results provide strong support for an isotropic Fermi surface with a large anisotropy in quasiparticle mass derived from a nodal hybridization.

Evidence for a Kondo destroying quantum critical point in YbRh2Si2

The heavy-fermion metal YbRh$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ is a weak antiferromagnet below $T_{N} = 0.07$ K. Application of a low magnetic field $B_{c} = 0.06$ T ($\perp c$) is sufficient to continuously suppress the antiferromagnetic (AF) order. Below $T \approx 10$ K, the Sommerfeld coefficient of the electronic specific heat $γ(T)$ exhibits a logarithmic divergence. At $T < 0.3$ K, $γ(T) \sim T^{-ε}$ ($ε: 0.3 - 0.4$), while the electrical resistivity $ρ(T) = ρ_{0} + aT$ ($ρ_{0}$: residual resistivity). Upon extrapolating finite-$T$ data of transport and thermodynamic quantities to $T = 0$, one observes (i) a vanishing of the "Fermi surface crossover" scale $T^{*}(B)$, (ii) an abrupt jump of the initial Hall coefficient $R_{H}(B)$ and (iii) a violation of the Wiedemann Franz law at $B = B_{c}$, the field-induced quantum critical point (QCP). These observations are interpreted as evidence of a critical destruction of the heavy quasiparticles, i.e., propagating Kondo singlets, at the QCP of this material.

Single-ion Kondo Scaling of the Coherent Fermi Liquid Regime in Ce1-xLaxNi2Ge2

Thermodynamic and transport properties of the La-diluted Kondo lattice CeNi2Ge2 were studied in a wide temperature range. The Ce-rich alloys Ce1-xLaxNi2Ge2 were found to exhibit distinct features of the coherent heavy Fermi liquid. At intermediate compositions (0.7 <= x <= 0.9) non-Fermi liquid properties have been observed, followed by the local Fermi liquid behavior in the dilute limit. The 4f-electron contribution to the specific heat was found to follow the predictions of the Kondo impurity model both in the local as well as coherent regimes, with the characteristic Kondo temperature decreasing rapidly from about 30 K for the parent compound CeNi2Ge2 to about 1K in the most dilute samples. The specific heat does not show any evidence for the emergence of a new characteristic energy scale related to the formation of the coherent Kondo lattice.
