Kinematic Fitting of electromagnetic calorimeter data - an improved method

Kinematic fitting is widely used in particle physics experiments as a powerful tool to improve experimental resolutions, to suppress background and to provide selection criteria for the identification of specific reactions. Kinematic fitting methods, however, typically assume that the fitted quantities follow Gaussian distributions; an assumption which does not always hold. This is particularly true for energy measurements from electromagnetic calorimeters. This issue can largely be overcome by performing a transformation of the non-Gaussian variables into variables which follow a Gaussian distribution. The new adapted kinematic fitting procedure allows to better account for the non-Gaussian nature of the measured calorimeter energies, at the same time improving the accuracy and robustness of the kinematic fit. This leads to improved pull and confidence-level distributions of the kinematic fit as well as improved invariant mass distributions and signal-to-background ratios in the final event sample.

50 Years of Quantum Chromodynamics

This paper presents a comprehensive review of both the theory and experimental successes of Quantum Chromodynamics, starting with its emergence as a well defined theory in 1972-73 and following developments and results up to the present day. Topics include a review of the earliest theoretical and experimental foundations; the fundamental constants of QCD; an introductory discussion of lattice QCD, the only known method for obtaining exact predictions from QCD; methods for approximating QCD, with special focus on effective field theories; QCD under extreme conditions; measurements and predictions of meson and baryon states; a special discussion of the structure of the nucleon; techniques for study of QCD at high energy, including treatment of jets and showers; measurements at colliders; weak decays and quark mixing; and a section on the future, which discusses new experimental facilities or upgrades currently funded. The paper is intended to provide a broad background for Ph.D. students and postdocs starting their career. Some contributions include personal accounts of how the ideas or experiments were developed.

Light-quark baryons

This is a contribution to the review "50 Years of Quantum Chromdynamics" edited by F. Gross and E. Klempt [arXiv:2212.11107], to be published in EPJC. The contribution reviews the new baryon resonances derived from photoproduction experiments. Implications of the new results for the interpretation of baryons are discussed.

Scalar isoscalar mesons and the scalar glueball from radiative $J/ψ$ decays

A coupled-channel analysis of BESIII data on radiative $J/ψ$ decays into $ππ$, $K\bar K$, $ηη$ and $ωϕ$ has been performed. The partial-wave amplitude is constrained by a large number of further data. The analysis finds ten isoscalar scalar mesons. Their masses, widths and decay modes are determined. The scalar mesons are interpreted as mainly SU(3)-singlet and mainly octet states. Octet isoscalar scalar states are observed with significant yields only in the 1500-2100\,MeV mass region. Singlet scalar mesons are produced over a wide mass range but their yield peaks in the same mass region. The peak is interpreted as scalar glueball. Its mass and width are determined to $M=1865$\er25$^{+10}_{-30}$ {\rm MeV} and $Γ= 370$\er$50^{+30}_{-20}$ {\rm MeV}, its yield in radiative $J/ψ$ decays to ($5.8\pm 1.0)\,10^{-3}$.

Resonances in QCD

We report on the EMMI Rapid Reaction Task Force meeting 'Resonances in QCD', which took place at GSI October 12-14, 2015. A group of 26 people met to discuss the physics of resonances in QCD. The aim of the meeting was defined by the following three key questions: What is needed to understand the physics of resonances in QCD? Where does QCD lead us to expect resonances with exotic quantum numbers? What experimental efforts are required to arrive at a coherent picture? For light mesons and baryons only those with ${\it up}$, ${\it down}$ and ${\it strange}$ quark content were considered. For heavy-light and heavy-heavy meson systems, those with ${\it charm}$ quarks were the focus. This document summarizes the discussions by the participants, which in turn led to the coherent conclusions we present here.

Development of a GEM-TPC prototype

The use of GEM foils for the amplification stage of a TPC instead of a con- ventional MWPC allows one to bypass the necessity of gating, as the backdrift is suppressed thanks to the asymmetric field configuration. This way, a novel continuously running TPC, which represents one option for the PANDA central tracker, can be realized. A medium sized prototype with a diameter of 300 mm and a length of 600 mm will be tested inside the FOPI spectrometer at GSI using a carbon or lithium beam at intermediate energies (E = 1-3AGeV). This detector test under realistic experimental conditions should allow us to verify the spatial resolution for single tracks and the reconstruction capability for displaced vertexes. A series of physics measurement implying pion beams is scheduled with the FOPI spectrometer together with the GEM-TPC as well.
