TMDs: Evolution, modeling, precision

The factorization theorem for $q_T$ spectra in Drell-Yan processes, boson production and semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering allows for the determination of the non-perturbative parts of transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions. Here we discuss the fit of Drell-Yan and $Z$-production data using the transverse momentum dependent formalism and the resummation of the evolution kernel. We find a good theoretical stability of the results and a final $χ^2/{\rm points}\lesssim 1$. We show how the fixing of the non-perturbative pieces of the evolution can be used to make predictions at present and future colliders.

Collins and Sivers effects in p(transv. polarized) p --> jet pion X: Universality and process dependence

In this paper we briefly review the transverse momentum dependent generalized parton model and its application to the study of azimuthal asymmetries in the distribution of leading hadrons (mainly pions) inside large transverse momentum jets inclusively produced in polarized proton-proton collisions. We put particular emphasis on the phenomenological interest of these observables, in combination with similar asymmetries measured in semi-inclusive deeply inelastic scattering, Drell-Yan processes and e+e- collisions, for the study of the universality properties of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions. We present results for RHIC kinematics at center-of-mass energies sqrt{s} = 200 and 500 GeV, for central and mainly forward jet rapidities, in particular for the Sivers distribution and the Collins fragmentation function, that are believed to be responsible of many of the largest asymmetries measured in the last years. We also briefly discuss the case of inclusive jet production and recent phenomenological applications of other theoretical approaches, like the colour gauge invariant generalized parton model and the collinear twist-three approach, aiming at clarifying the issues of the universality and process dependence of transverse momentum dependent functions.

Azimuthal distributions of pions inside jets at RHIC

We evaluate the azimuthal asymmetries for the distributions of leading pions inside a jet, produced in high-energy proton-proton collisions, in kinematic configurations currently under active investigation at RHIC. Adopting a transverse momentum dependent approach, which assumes the validity of a perturbative QCD factorization scheme and takes into account all the spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, we show how the main mechanisms underlying these asymmetries, namely the Sivers and the Collins effects, can be disentangled. Furthermore, we consider the impact of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions and suggest a method for testing the universality properties of the Sivers function for quarks.

Transversity: theory and phenomenology

The distribution of transversely polarized quarks inside a transversely polarized nucleon, known as transversity, encodes a basic piece of information on the nucleon structure, sharing the same status with the more familiar unpolarized and helicity distributions. I will review its properties and discuss different ways to access it, with highlights and limitations. Recent phenomenological extractions and perspectives are also presented.

Probing TMDs through azimuthal distributions of pions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

The azimuthal distributions around the jet axis of leading pions produced in the jet fragmentation process in pp collisions are studied within the framework of the so-called generalized parton model. The observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries are estimated in kinematic configurations presently investigated at RHIC. It is shown how the main contributions coming from the Collins and Sivers effects can be disentangled. In addition, a test of the process dependence of the Sivers function is provided.

Transversity

Transversity distribution, together with the unpolarized and the helicity distributions, represents a basic piece of information on the internal structure of nucleons. Its peculiar property of being a chiral-odd quantity implies that it can be accessed only in combination with another chiral-odd partner, making it much harder to measure. In this talk I will review its properties and describe the most relevant and feasible ways to access it. Recent phenomenological extractions, their highlights and limitations, as well as perspectives are discussed.

TMDs, universality and factorization

We present a short overview on transverse momentum dependent parton distribution and fragmentation functions, giving their partonic interpretation and ways to access them. We then discuss the issue of their universality and its connection to factorization in perturbative QCD.

Azimuthal distributions of pions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large pT jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries, which are generated by all the physically allowed combinations of transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions. In particular, we show how one can isolate the Collins and Sivers contributions, and suggest a test of the process dependence of the Sivers function by considering the effect of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions.

Testing the process dependence of the Sivers function via hadron distributions inside a jet

We study the process dependence of the Sivers function by considering the impact of color-gauge invariant initial and final state interactions on transverse spin asymmetries in proton-proton reactions within the framework of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD), generalized parton model. To this aim, we consider the azimuthal distribution of leading pions inside a fragmenting jet as well as single inclusive jet asymmetry in polarized proton proton collisions. In contrast to single inclusive pion production, in both cases we can isolate the Sivers contribution and thereby study its process dependence. The predictions for the Sivers asymmetry obtained with and without inclusion of color gauge factors are comparable in size but with opposite signs. We conclude that both processes represent unique opportunities to discriminate among the two approaches and test the universality properties of the Sivers function in hadronic reactions.

Azimuthal asymmetries for hadron distributions inside jets in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large p_T jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries for the unpolarized and single-polarized case related to both quark and gluon-originated jets. We account for all physically allowed combinations of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions, with special attention to the Sivers, Boer-Mulders, and transversity quark distributions, and to the Collins fragmentation function for quarks (and to the analogous functions for gluon partons).

Azimuthal asymmetries for hadron distributions inside a jet in hadronic collisions

Using a generalized parton model approach including spin and intrinsic parton motion effects, and assuming the validity of factorization for large-pT jet production in hadronic collisions, we study the azimuthal distribution around the jet axis of leading unpolarized or (pseudo)scalar hadrons, namely pions, produced in the jet fragmentation process. We identify the observable leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries for the unpolarized and single-polarized case related to quark and gluon-originated jets. We account for all physically allowed combinations of the transverse momentum dependent (TMD) parton distribution and fragmentation functions, with special attention to the Sivers, Boer-Mulders, and transversity quark distributions, and to the Collins fragmentation function for quarks (and to the analogous functions for gluons). For each of these effects we evaluate, at central and forward rapidities and for kinematical configurations accessible at BNL-RHIC, the corresponding potentially maximized asymmetry (for pi+ production), obtained by saturating natural positivity bounds (and the Soffer bound for transversity) for the distribution and fragmentation functions involved and summing additively all partonic contributions. We then estimate, for both neutral and charged pions, the asymmetries involving TMD functions for which parameterizations are available. We also study the role of the different mechanisms, and the corresponding transverse single spin asymmetries, for large-pT inclusive jet production.

Exploring the transverse spin structure of the nucleon

We discuss our present understanding of the transverse spin structure of the nucleon and of related properties originating from parton transverse motion. Starting from the transversity distribution and the ways to access it, we then address the role played by spin and transverse momentum dependent (TMD) distributions in azimuthal and transverse single spin asymmetries. The latest extractions of the Sivers, Collins and transversity functions are also presented.

The Sivers single-spin asymmetry in photon-jet production

We study a weighted asymmetry in the azimuthal distribution of photon-jet pairs produced in the process p^\uparrow p --> γjet X with a transversely polarized proton. We focus on the contribution of the Sivers effect only, considering experimental configurations accessible at RHIC-BNL. We show that predictions for the asymmetry, obtained in terms of gluonic-pole cross sections calculable in perturbative QCD, can be tested and clearly discriminated from those based on a generalized parton model, involving standard partonic cross sections. Experimental measurements of the asymmetry will therefore test our present understanding of single-spin asymmetries.

During the workshop "Transversity: New Developments in Nucleon Spin Structure" (ECT*, Trento, Italy, 14-18 June 2004), a series of recommendations was put forward by the participants concerning definitions and notations for describing effects of intrinsic transverse momentum of partons in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering.

Parton intrinsic motion in inclusive particle production: unpolarized cross sections, single spin asymmetries and the Sivers effect

The relevance of intrinsic (or primordial) transverse momentum of partons in the inclusive production of particles at high energy and moderately large p_T has been known for a long time, beginning with Drell-Yan and diphoton processes, and continuing with photon and meson production in hadronic collisions. In view of its renewed interest in the context of polarized processes and single spin asymmetries we perform, in the framework of perturbative QCD with the inclusion of spin and transverse momentum effects, a detailed analysis of several such processes in different kinematical situations. We show that the inclusion of these effects leads, at the level of accuracy reachable in this approach, to an overall satisfactory agreement between theoretical predictions and experimental unpolarized data, thus giving support to the study of spin effects and single spin asymmetries within the same scheme. We present results for transverse single spin asymmetries, generated by the so-called Sivers effect, in inclusive pion and photon production in proton-proton collisions. We compare our results with the available experimental data and with previous results obtained using simplified versions of this approach.
