Hopf orbits and the first ECH capacity

We consider dynamically convex star-shaped domains in a symplectic vector space of dimension $4$. For such a domain, a ``Hopf orbit'' is a closed characteristic in the boundary which is unknotted and has self-linking number $-1$. We show that the minimum action among Hopf orbits exists and defines a symplectic capacity for dynamically convex star-shaped domains. We further show that this capacity agrees with the first ECH capacity for such domains. Combined with a result of Edtmair, this implies that for dynamically convex star-shaped domains in four dimensions, the first ECH capacity agrees with the cylinder capacity. This also provides a method to show that the first ECH capacity of a dynamically convex star-shaped domain satisfies the axioms of a normalized symplectic capacity without any need for Seiberg-Witten theory.

Quantitative conditions for right-handedness of flows

We give a numerical condition for right-handedness of a dynamically convex Reeb flow on the $3$-sphere. Our condition is stated in terms of an asymptotic ratio between the amount of rotation of the linearised flow and the linking number of trajectories with a periodic orbit that spans a disk-like global surface of section. As an application, we find an explicit constant $δ_* < 0.7225$ such that if a Riemannian metric on the $2$-sphere is $δ$-pinched with $δ> δ_*$, then its geodesic flow lifts to a right-handed flow on the $3$-sphere. In particular, all finite non-empty collections of periodic orbits of such a geodesic flow bind open books whose pages are global surfaces of section.

Homoclinic orbits, Reeb chords and nice Birkhoff sections for Reeb flows in 3D

We prove that for a $C^\infty$-generic contact form defining a given co-oriented contact structure on a closed $3$-manifold, every hyperbolic periodic Reeb orbit admits a transverse homoclinic connection in each of the branches of its stable and unstable manifolds. We exploit this result to prove that for a $C^\infty$-generic contact form defining a given co-oriented contact structure, given any finite collection $Γ$ of periodic Reeb orbits and any Legendrian link $L$, there exists a global surface of section (embedded Birkhoff section) for the Reeb flow that contains $Γ$ in its boundary, and that contains in its interior a Legendrian link that is Legendrian isotopic to $L$ by a $C^0$-small isotopy. Finally we prove that if the Reeb vector field admits a $\partial$-strong Birkhoff section then every Legendrian knot has infinitely many geometrically distinct Reeb chords, except possibly when the ambient manifold is a lens space or the sphere and the Reeb flow has exactly two periodic orbits. In particular, $C^\infty$-generically on the contact form there are infinitely many geometrically distinct Reeb chords for every Legendrian knot. In the case of geodesic flows, every Legendrian knot has infinitely many disjoint chords, without any further assumptions.

Genus zero transverse foliations for weakly convex Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere

A contact form on the tight $3$-sphere $(S^3,ξ_0)$ is called weakly convex if the Conley-Zehnder index of every Reeb orbit is at least $2$. In this article, we study Reeb flows of weakly convex contact forms on $(S^3,ξ_0)$ admitting a prescribed finite set of index-$2$ Reeb orbits, which are all hyperbolic and mutually unlinked. We present conditions so that these index-$2$ orbits are binding orbits of a genus zero transverse foliation whose additional binding orbits have index $3$. In addition, we show in the real-analytic case that the topological entropy of the Reeb flow is positive if the branches of the stable/unstable manifolds of the index-$2$ orbits are mutually non-coincident.

Proof of Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder's two or infinity conjecture

We prove that every Reeb flow on a closed connected three-manifold has either two or infinitely many simple periodic orbits, assuming that the associated contact structure has torsion first Chern class. As a special case, we prove a conjecture of Hofer-Wysocki-Zehnder published in 2003 asserting that a smooth and autonomous Hamiltonian flow on $\mathbb{R}^4$ has either two or infinitely many simple periodic orbits on any regular compact connected energy level that is transverse to the radial vector field. Other corollaries settle some old problems about Finsler metrics: we show that every Finsler metric on $S^2$ has either two or infinitely many prime closed geodesics; and we show that a Finsler metric on $S^2$ with at least one closed geodesic that is not irrationally elliptic must have infinitely many prime closed geodesics. The novelty of our work is that we do not make any nondegeneracy hypotheses.

Generic properties of $3$-dimensional Reeb flows: Birkhoff sections and entropy

In this paper we use broken book decompositions to study Reeb flows on closed $3$-manifolds. We show that if the Liouville measure of a nondegenerate contact form can be approximated by periodic orbits, then there is a Birkhoff section for the associated Reeb flow. In view of Irie's equidistribution theorem, this is shown to imply that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have a Birkhoff section contains an open and dense set in the $C^\infty$-topology. We also show that the set of contact forms whose Reeb flows have positive topological entropy is open and dense in the $C^\infty$-topology.

Contact three-manifolds with exactly two simple Reeb orbits

It is known that every contact form on a closed three-manifold has at least two simple Reeb orbits, and a generic contact form has infinitely many. We show that if there are exactly two simple Reeb orbits, then the contact form is nondegenerate. Combined with a previous result, this implies that the three-manifold is diffeomorphic to the three-sphere or a lens space, and the two simple Reeb orbits are the core circles of a genus one Heegaard splitting. We also obtain further information about the Reeb dynamics and the contact structure. For example the Reeb flow has a disk-like global surface of section and so its dynamics are described by a pseudorotation; the contact struture is universally tight; and in the case of the three-sphere, the contact volume and the periods and rotation numbers of the simple Reeb orbits satisfy the same relations as for an irrational ellipsoid.

Systolic ratio, index of closed orbits and convexity for tight contact forms on the three-sphere

We construct a dynamically convex contact form on the three-sphere whose systolic ratio is arbitrarily close to 2. This example is related to a conjecture of Viterbo, whose validity would imply that the systolic ratio of a convex contact form does not exceed 1. We also construct a sequence of tight contact forms $α_n$, $n\geq 2$, with systolic ratio arbitrarily close to $n$ and suitable bounds on the mean rotation number of all the closed orbits of the induced Reeb flow.

Systems of global surfaces of section for dynamically convex Reeb flows on the 3-sphere

We characterize which closed Reeb orbits of a dynamically convex contact form on the 3-sphere bound disk-like global surfaces of section for the Reeb flow, without any genericity assumptions. We show that these global surfaces of section come in families, organized as open book decompositions. As an application we obtain new global surfaces of section for the Hamiltonian dynamics on strictly convex 3-dimensional energy levels.

A Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem for tight Reeb flows on $S^3$

We consider Reeb flows on the tight $3$-sphere admitting a pair of closed orbits forming a Hopf link. If the rotation numbers associated to the transverse linearized dynamics at these orbits fail to satisfy a certain resonance condition then there exist infinitely many periodic trajectories distinguished by their linking numbers with the components of the link. This result admits a natural comparison to the Poincaré-Birkhoff theorem on area-preserving annulus homeomorphisms. An analogous theorem holds on $SO(3)$ and applies to geodesic flows of Finsler metrics on $S^2$.

Local contact homology and applications

We introduce a local version of contact homology for an isolated periodic orbit of the Reeb flow and prove that its rank is uniformly bounded for isolated iterations. Several applications are obtained, including a generalization of Gromoll-Meyer's theorem on the existence of infinitely many simple periodic orbits, resonance relations and conditions for the existence of non-hyperbolic periodic orbits.

Global properties of tight Reeb flows with applications to Finsler geodesic flows on $S^2$

We show that if a Finsler metric on $S^2$ with reversibility $r$ has flag curvatures $K$ satisfying $(\frac{r}{r+1})^2 <K \leq 1$, then closed geodesics with specific contact-topological properties cannot exist, in particular there are no closed geodesics with precisely one transverse self-intersection point. This is a special case of a more general phenomenon, and other closed geodesics with many self-intersections are also excluded. We provide examples of Randers type, obtained by suitably modifying the metrics constructed by Katok \cite{katok}, proving that this pinching condition is sharp. Our methods are borrowed from the theory of pseudo-holomorphic curves in symplectizations. Finally, we study global dynamical aspects of 3-dimensional energy levels $C^2$-close to $S^3$.

Fast finite-energy planes in symplectizations and applications

We define the notion of fast finite-energy planes in the symplectization of a closed 3-dimensional energy level $M$ of contact type. We use them to construct special open book decompositions of $M$ when the contact structure is tight and induced by a (non-degenerate) dynamically convex contact form. The obtained open books have disk-like pages that are global surfaces of section for the Hamiltonian dynamics. Let $S \subset \R^4$ be the boundary of a smooth, strictly convex, non-degenerate and bounded domain. We show that a necessary and sufficient condition for a closed Hamiltonian orbit $P\subset S$ to be the boundary of a disk-like global surface of section for the Hamiltonian dynamics is that $P$ is unknotted and has self-linking number -1.
