Leveraging Phytolith Research using Artificial Intelligence

Phytolith analysis is a crucial tool for reconstructing past vegetation and human activities, but traditional methods are severely limited by labour-intensive, time-consuming manual microscopy. To address this bottleneck, we present Sorometry: a comprehensive end-to-end artificial intelligence pipeline for the high-throughput digitisation, inference, and interpretation of phytoliths. Our workflow processes z-stacked optical microscope scans to automatically generate synchronised 2D orthoimages and 3D point clouds of individual microscopic particles. We developed a multimodal fusion model that combines ConvNeXt for 2D image analysis and PointNet++ for 3D point cloud analysis, supported by a graphical user interface for expert annotation and review. Tested on reference collections and archaeological samples from the Bolivian Amazon, our fusion model achieved a global classification accuracy of 77.9\% across 24 diagnostic morphotypes and 84.5% for segmentation quality. Crucially, the integration of 3D data proved essential for distinguishing complex morphotypes (such as grass silica short cell phytoliths) whose diagnostic features are often obscured by their orientation in 2D projections. Beyond individual object classification, Sorometry incorporates Bayesian finite mixture modelling to predict overall plant source contributions at the assemblage level, successfully identifying specific plants like maize and palms in complex mixed samples. This integrated platform transforms phytolith research into an "omics"-scale discipline, dramatically expanding analytical capacity, standardising expert judgements, and enabling reproducible, population-level characterisations of archaeological and paleoecological assemblages.

Medium polarization effects in 3SD1 spin-triplet pairing

Stimulated by the still puzzling competition between spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing in nuclei, the 3SD1 neutron-proton pairing is investigated in the framework of BCS theory of nuclear matter. The medium polarization effects are included in the single particle spectrum and also in the pairing interaction starting from the G-matrix, calculated in the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approximation. The vertex corrections due to spin and isospin collective excitations of the medium are determined from the Bethe-Salpeter equation in the RPA limit, taking into account the tensor correlations. It is found that the self-energy corrections confine the superfluid state to very low-density, while remarkably quenching the magnitude of the energy gap, while the induced interaction has an attractive effect. The interplay between spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing is discussed in nuclear matter as well as in finite nuclei.

Single particle potentials of asymmetric nuclear matter in different spin-isospin channels

We investigate the neutron and proton single particle (s.p.) potentials of asymmetric nuclear matter and their isospin dependence in various spin-isospin $ST$ channels within the framework of the Brueckner-Hartree-Fock approach. It is shown that in symmetric nuclear matter, the s.p. potentials in both the isospin-singlet T=0 channel and isospin-triplet T=1 channel are essentially attractive, and the magnitudes in the two different channels are roughly the same. In neutron-rich nuclear matter, the isospin-splitting of the proton and neutron s.p. potentials turns out to be mainly determined by the isospin-singlet T=0 channel contribution which becomes more attractive for proton and more repulsive for neutron at higher asymmetries.

Dense nuclear matter and symmetry energy in strong magnetic fields

The properties of nuclear matter in the presence of a strong magnetic field, including the density-dependent symmetry energy, the chemical composition and spin polarizations, are investigated in the framework of the relativistic mean field models FSU-Gold. The anomalous magnetic moments (AMM) of the particles and the nonlinear isoscalar-isovector coupling are included. It is found that the parabolic isospin-dependence of the energy per nucleon of asymmetric nuclear matter remains valid for values of the magnetic field below $10^{5}B_{c}^{e}$, $B_{c}^{e}=4.414\times10^{13}$G being the electron critical field. Accordingly, the symmetry energy can be obtained by the difference of the energy per nucleon in pure neutron matter and that in symmetric matter. The symmetry energy, which is enhanced by the presence of the magnetic field, significantly affects the chemical composition and the proton polarization. The effects of the AMM of each component on the energy per nucleon, symmetry energy, chemical composition and spin polarization are discussed in detail.

Density dependence of nuclear symmetry energy constrained by mean-field calculations

We establish a correlation for the symmetry energy at saturation density $S_{0}$, slope parameter $L$ and curvature parameter $K_{\text{sym}}$ based on widely different mean field interactions. With the help of this correlation and available empirical and theoretical information, the density dependent behavior around the saturation density is determined. We compare the results obtained with the present approach with those by other analyses. With this obtained density dependent behavior of the symmetry energy, the neutron skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb and some properties of neutron stars are investigated. In addition, it is found that the expression $S(ρ)=S_{0}(ρ/ρ_{0})^γ$ or $S(ρ)=12.5(ρ/ρ_{0}) ^{2/3}+C_{p}(ρ/ρ_{0}) ^γ$ does not reproduce the density dependence of the symmetry energy as predicted by the mean-field approach around nuclear saturation density.

Screening of nuclear pairing in nuclear and neutron matter

The screening potential in the $^1S_0$ and $^3S_1$ pairing channels in neutron and nuclear matter in different approximations is discussed. It is found that the vertex corrections to the potential are much stronger in nuclear matter than in neutron matter.

Thermodynamics of $n$-$p$ condensate in asymmetric nuclear matter

We study the neutron-proton pairing in nuclear matter as a function of isospin asymmetry at finite temperatures and the saturation density using realistic nuclear forces and Brueckner-renormalized single particle spectra. Our computation of the thermodynamic quantities shows that while the difference of the entropies of the superconducting and normal phases anomalously changes its sign as a function of temperature for arbitrary asymmetry, the grand canonical potential does not; the superconducting state is found to be stable in the whole temperature-asymmetry plane. The pairing gap completely disappears for density-asymmetries exceeding $α_c= (n_n-n_p)/n \simeq 0.11$.
