The Pauli-Villars-regularised Dirac field coupled to electromagnetic fields at thermal equilibrium

In this paper we consider a model for the Dirac field in a classical electromagnetic field at thermal equilibrium. We adopt the Pauli-Villars regularisation technique in order to properly define the free energy of the equilibrium state, extending the previous work by the second named author on the purely magnetic case. This work provides a first step towards understanding polarisation effects in the Dirac field at thermal equilibrium, in the presence of both electrostatic and magnetic potentials.

Global well-posedness in a Hartree-Fock model for graphene

Graphene is a monolayer graphitic film in which electrons behave like two-dimensional Dirac fermions without mass. Its study has attracted a wide interest in the domain of condensed matter physics. In particular, it represents an ideal system to test the comprehension of 2D massless relativistic particles in a laboratory, the Fermi velocity being 300 times smaller than the speed of light. In this work, we present a global well-posedness result for graphene in the Hartree- Fock approximation. The model allows to describe the time evolution of graphene in the presence of external time-dependent electric potentials, such as those induced by local charge defects in the monolayer of carbon atoms. Our approach is based on a well established non-perturbative framework originating from the study of three-dimensional quantum electrodynamics.

Vacuum polarization in a one-dimensional effective quantum-electrodynamics model

With the aim of progressing toward a practical implementation of an effective quantum-electrodynamics (QED) theory of atoms and molecules, which includes the effects of vacuum polarization through the creation of virtual electron-positron pairs but without the explicit photon degrees of freedom, we study a one-dimensional effective QED model of the hydrogen-like atom with delta-potential interactions. This model resembles the three-dimensional effective QED theory with Coulomb interactions while being substantially simpler. We provide some mathematical details about the definition of this model, calculate the vacuum-polarization density, and the Lamb-type shift of the bound-state energy, correcting and extending results of previous works. We also study the approximation of the model in a finite plane-wave basis, and in particular we discuss the basis convergence of the bound-state energy and eigenfunction, of the vacuum-polarization density, and of the Lamb-type shift of the bound-state energy. We highlight the difficulty of converging the vacuum-polarization density in a finite basis and we propose a way to improve it. The present work could give hints on how to perform similar calculations for the three-dimensional effective QED theory of atoms and molecules.

The Pauli-Villars regularised free energy of Dirac's vacuum in purely magnetic fields

The Dirac vacuum is a non-linear polarisable medium rather than an empty space. This non-linear behaviour starts to be significant for extremely large electromagnetic fields such as the magnetic field on the surface of certain neutron stars. Even though the null temperature case was deeply studied in the past decades, the problem at non-zero temperature needs to be better understood. In this work, we present the first rigorous derivation of the one-loop effective magnetic Lagrangian at positive temperature, a non-linear functional describing the free energy of the Dirac vacuum in a classical magnetic field. After introducing our model, we properly define the free energy functional using the Pauli-Villars regularisation technique in order to remove the worst ultraviolet divergences, which represent a well known issue of the theory. The study of the properties of this functional is addressed before focusing on the limit of slowly varying classical magnetic fields. In this regime, we prove the convergence of this functional to the Euler-Heisenberg formula with thermal corrections, recovering the effective Lagrangian first derived by Dittrich in 1979.

Relativistic electrons coupled with Newtonian nuclear dynamics

In the study of the electronic structure of heavy atoms, relativistic effects cannot be neglected and the Dirac operator naturally appears in place of the Schr\"odinger operator, raising a number of additional difficulties. The complexity of these systems has been addressed by various approximations. We consider a model consisting of differential equations coupling the time evolution of a finite number of relativistic electrons with the Newtonian dynamics of finitely many nuclei. The electrons are described by the Bogoliubov-Dirac-Fock (BDF) equation of quantum electrodynamics (QED). This system can be seen as a first step in the study of molecular dynamics phenomena, when both relativistic and quantum effects have to be taken into account for the electrons. We address the Cauchy problem for this model and prove global well-posedness.
