Worldsheet from worldline

We take a step toward a "microscopic" derivation of gauge-string duality. In particular, using mathematical techniques of Strebel differentials and discrete exterior calculus, we obtain a bosonic string worldsheet action for a string embedded in d+1 dimensional asymptotically AdS space from multi-loop Feynman graphs of a quantum field theory of scalar matrices in d-dimensions in the limit of diverging loop number. Our work is building on the program started by 't Hooft in 1974, this time including the holographic dimension which we show to emerge from the continuum of Schwinger parameters of Feynman diagrams.

Strings from interacting quantum fields

We generalize Gopakumar's microscopic derivation of Witten diagrams in large N free quantum field theory [1] to interacting theories in perturbative expansion. For simplicity we consider a matrix scalar field with $Φ^h$ interaction in d dimensions. Using Schwinger's proper time formulation and organizing the sum over Feynman diagrams by the number of loops $\ell$, we show that the two-point function in the massless case can be expressed as a sum over boundary-to-boundary propagators of massive bulk scalars in $AdS_{d+1}$ with masses determined by $\ell$. The two-point function of the massive theory has the same structure given by a sum over boundary-to-boundary propagators but on a geometry different than AdS. The coefficients in the sum contain information on the putative string geometry dual to the interacting QFT. We also consider the three-point function in the field theory and show that it can again be given as an infinite sum, this time over the products of three bulk-to-boundary propagators. The issue of divergences and renormalization is discussed in detail. We also notice an intriguing similarity between field theory and string amplitudes. In particular we observe that, in the large-N limit, embedding function of string in the holographic direction corresponds to a continuum limit of Schwinger parameters of Feynman diagrams in the limit where $\ell$ diverges. This provides an interpretation of the holographic dimension emerging directly from field theory amplitudes.

Analytic long-lived modes in charged critical plasma

Fluctuations around critical behavior of a holographic charged plasmas are investigated by studying quasi-normal modes of the corresponding black branes in 5D Einstein-Maxwell-Dilaton gravity. The near horizon geometry of black branes approaches the well-known 2D charged string black hole in the critical limit, for which a world-sheet description is available, and the corresponding quasi-normal modes can be obtained analytically from the reflection amplitude of the 2D black hole geometry. We find two distinct set of modes: a purely imaginary ``decoupled'' set, directly following from the reflection amplitude, and a ``non-decoupled'' set that was already identified in the neutral holographic plasma in \cite{Betzios:2018kwn}. In the extremal limit, the former set of imaginary quasi-normal modes coalesce on a branch cut starting from the the origin, signaling breakdown of hydrodynamic approximation. We further complete the black brane geometry with a slice of AdS near the boundary, to allow for a holographic construction, and find another set of modes localized in the UV. Finally, we develop an alternative WKB method to obtain the quasi-normal modes in the critical limit and apply this method to study the spectrum of hyperscaling-violating Lifshitz black branes. The critical limit of the plasma we consider in this paper is in one-to-one correspondence with the large D limit of Einstein's gravity which allows for an alternative interesting interpretation of our findings.

Hydrodynamics of spin currents

We study relativistic hydrodynamics in the presence of a non vanishing spin chemical potential. Using a variety of techniques we carry out an exhaustive analysis, and identify the constitutive relations for the stress tensor and spin current in such a setup, allowing us to write the hydrodynamic equations of motion to second order in derivatives. We then solve the equations of motion in a perturbative setup and find surprisingly good agreement with measurements of global $Λ$-hyperon polarization carried out at RHIC.

Holographic QCD and magnetic fields

We review the holographic approach to electromagnetic phenomena in large N QCD. After a brief discussion of existing holographic models, we concentrate on the improved holographic QCD model extended to include magnetically induced phenomena. We explore the influence of magnetic fields on the QCD ground state, focusing on (inverse) magnetic catalysis of chiral condensate, investigate the phase diagram of the theory as a function of magnetic field, temperature and quark chemical potential, and, finally discuss effects of magnetic fields on the quark-anti-quark potential, shear viscosity, speed of sound and magnetization.

Inverse Anisotropic Catalysis in Holographic QCD

We investigate the effects of anisotropy on the chiral condensate in a holographic model of QCD with a fully backreacted quark sector at vanishing chemical potential. The high temperature deconfined phase is a neutral and anisotropic plasma showing different pressure gradients along different spatial directions, similar to the state produced in noncentral heavy-ion collisions. We find that the chiral transition occurs at a lower temperature in the presence of anisotropy. Equivalently, we find that anisotropy acts destructively on the chiral condensate near the transition temperature. These are precisely the same footprints as the "inverse magnetic catalysis" i.e. the destruction of the condensate with increasing magnetic field observed earlier on the lattice, in effective field theory models and in holography. Based on our findings we suggest, in accordance with the conjecture of [1], that the cause for the inverse magnetic catalysis may be the anisotropy caused by the presence of the magnetic field instead of the charge dynamics created by it. We conclude that the weakening of the chiral condensate due to anisotropy is more general than that due to a magnetic field and we coin the former "inverse anisotropic catalysis". Finally, we observe that any amount of anisotropy changes the IR physics substantially: the geometry is $\text{AdS}_4 \times \mathbb{R}$ up to small corrections, confinement is present only up to a certain scale, and the particles acquire finite widths.

Bifurcations in the RG-flow of QCD

Bifurcation analysis is used to study an effective model of QCD$_4$ with four-fermi interactions. Our analysis supports the scenario of a fixed point merger at the lower edge of the conformal window. This indicates square root scaling of the anomalous scaling dimensions of the fermion fields just above the lower edge and exponential scaling just below. We also predict existence of new fixed points in this model whose (dis)appearance may indicate transitions of the flow within the conformal window. Furthermore, we make new predictions for the critical value $(N_{f}/N_{c})_{\textrm{crit}}$ at the lower edge. We also obtain exotic spiraling flows that are generated by complex scaling dimensions of the effective four-fermi interactions. Finally, we extend the model by adding a scalar field that couples with a Yukawa interaction term and study the modifications it causes to RG-flows.

Holographic QCD in the Veneziano limit at finite Magnetic Field and Chemical Potential

We investigate the phase diagram of QCD-like gauge theories at strong coupling at finite magnetic field $B$, temperature $T$ and baryon chemical potential $μ$ using the improved holographic QCD model including the full backreaction of the quarks in the plasma. In addition to the phase diagram we study the behavior of the quark condensate as a function of $T$, $B$ and $μ$ and discuss the fate of (inverse) magnetic catalysis at finite $μ$. In particular we observe that inverse magnetic catalysis exists only for small values of the baryon chemical potential. The speed of sound in this holographic quark-gluon plasma exhibits interesting dependence on the thermodynamic parameters.

Improved Holographic QCD and the Quark-gluon Plasma

We review construction of the improved holographic models for QCD-like confining gauge theories and their applications to the physics of the Quark-gluon plasma. We also review recent progress in this area of research. The lecture notes start from the vacuum structure of these theories, then develop thermodynamic and hydrodynamic observables and end with more advanced topics such as the holographic QCD in the presence of external magnetic fields. This is a summary of the lectures presented at the 56th Cracow School of Theoretical Physics in Spring 2016 at Zakopane, Poland.

Holographic equilibration in confining gauge theories under external magnetic fields

We investigate the effect of external magnetic fields on equilibration in the improved holographic QCD theory in the deconfined phase using the AdS/CFT correspondence. In particular we calculate the quasinormal mode spectra in the corresponding black brane solutions and study their dependence on temperature, momentum and magnetic field, both in the scalar and the shear channels. We find complex patterns in the motion of quasinormal modes on the complex plane, including certain cross overs between the lowest lying modes under varying magnetic field, momentum and temperature. We also discover a critical value of the magnetic field $B_c$ above which the hydrodynamic approximation breaks down, as the imaginary part of the first excited quasi-normal mode in the shear channel becomes smaller than that of the hydro mode.

Electromagnetic response of interacting Weyl semimetals

We study the electromagnetic properties of Weyl semimetals with strong interactions. Focusing on a single Weyl cone in the band structure, we induce strong interactions by coupling the Weyl fermion with a tunable coupling constant $g_f$ to a quantum critical system. The critical fluctuations are described by a conformal field theory containing fermionic operators with scaling dimension $Δ$. Employing the methods of the holographic correspondence, we then derive the effective theory of the Weyl fermion in the presence of external electric and magnetic fields. In particular, we determine the frequency and momentum-dependent anomalous magnetic moment of the Weyl fermions. We also determine the conductivity of the Weyl semimetal including the vertex corrections consistent with the Ward identity. Finally, we connect our construction to the case of Coulomb interactions in Weyl semimetals by tuning the parameters $Δ\rightarrow 5/2$ and $g_f^2 \rightarrow e/\sqrt{\hbar cε_0$.

Late time behavior of non-conformal plasmas

We determine analytically the dependence of the approach to thermal equilibrium of strongly coupled plasmas on the breaking of scale invariance. The theories we consider are the holographic duals to Einstein gravity coupled to a scalar with an exponential potential. The coefficient in the exponent, $X$, is the parameter that controls the deviation from the conformally invariant case. For these models we obtain analytic solutions for the plasma expansion in the late-time limit, under the assumption of boost-invariance, and we determine the scaling behaviour of the energy density, pressure, and temperature as a function of time. We find that the temperature decays as a function of proper time as $T\sim τ^{-s/4}$ with $s$ determined in terms of the non-conformality parameter $X$ as $s=4(1-4X^2)/3$. This agrees with the result of Janik and Peschanski, $s=4/3$, for the conformal plasmas and generalizes it to non-conformal plasmas with $X\neq 0$. We also consider more realistic potentials where the exponential is supplemented by power-law terms. Even though in this case we cannot have exact solutions, we are able under certain assumptions to determine the scaling of the energy, that receives logarithmic corrections.

Thermodynamics and CP-odd transport in Holographic QCD with Finite Magnetic Field

We consider a bottom-up holographic model of QCD at finite temperature T and magnetic field B, and study dependence of thermodynamics and CP-odd transport on these variables. As the magnetic field couples to the flavor sector only, one should take the Veneziano limit where the number of flavors and colors are large while their ratio is kept fixed. We investigate the corresponding holographic background in the approximation where the ratio of flavors to colors is finite but small. We demonstrate that B-dependence of the entropy of QCD is in qualitative agreement with the recent lattice studies. Finally we study the CP-odd transport properties of this system. In particular, we determine the Chern-Simons decay rate at finite B and T, that is an important ingredient in the Chiral Magnetic Effect.

Horizon universality and anomalous conductivities

We show that the value of chiral conductivities associated with anomalous transport is universal in a general class of strongly coupled quantum field theories. Our result applies to theories with no dynamical gluon fields and admitting a gravitational holographic dual in the large N limit. On the gravity side the result follows from near horizon universality of the fluctuation equations, similar to the holographic calculation of the shear viscosity.

Magnetohydrodynamics and charged currents in heavy ion collisions

The hot QCD matter produced in any heavy ion collision with a nonzero impact parameter is produced within a strong magnetic field. We study the imprint the magnetic fields produced in non-central heavy ion collisions leave on the azimuthal distributions and correlations of the produced charged hadrons. The magnetic field is time-dependent and the medium is expanding, which leads to the induction of charged currents due to the combination of Faraday and Hall effects. We find that these currents result in a charge-dependent directed flow $v_1$ that is odd in rapidity and odd under charge exchange. It can be detected by measuring correlations between the directed flow of charged hadrons at different rapidities, $\langle v_1^\pm (y_1) v_1^\pm (y_2) \rangle$.

(Non)renormalization of Anomalous Conductivities and Holography

The chiral magnetic and the chiral vortical effects are recently discovered phenomena arising from chiral gauge and gravitational anomalies that lead to generation of electric currents in presence of magnetic field or vorticity. The magnitude of these effects is determined by the anomalous conductivities. These conductivities can be calculated by the linear response theory, and in the strong coupling limit this calculation can be carried out by the holographic techniques. Earlier calculations in case of conformal field theories indicate non-renormalization of these conductivities where the holographic calculation agrees with the free field limit. We extend this holographic study to non-conformal theories exhibiting mass-gap and confinement-deconfinement type transitions in a holographic model based on the analytic black hole solution of Gao and Zhang. We show that radiative corrections are also absent in these non-conformal theories confirming indirect arguments of Jensen et al in a direct and non-trivial fashion. There are various indications in field theory that such radiative corrections should arise when contribution of dynamical gluon fields to the chiral anomaly is present. Motivated by this, we seek for such corrections in the holographic picture and argue that such corrections indeed arise through mixing of the background and its fluctuations with the axion and the one-form fields that couple to the flavor and probe gauge branes through the Wess-Zumino terms. These corrections are non-vanishing when the flavor to color ratio $N_f/N_c$ is finite, therefore they are only visible in the Veneziano limit at large $N_c$.

The Chern-Simons Diffusion Rate in Improved Holographic QCD

In (3+1)-dimensional SU(Nc) Yang-Mills (YM) theory, the Chern-Simons diffusion rate, Gamma_{CS}, is determined by the zero-momentum, zero-frequency limit of the retarded two-point function of the CP-odd operator tr[F ^ F], with F the YM field strength. The Chern-Simons diffusion rate is a crucial ingredient for many CP-odd phenomena, including the chiral magnetic effect in the quark-gluon plasma. We compute Gamma_{CS} in the high-temperature, deconfined phase of Improved Holographic QCD, a refined holographic model for large-Nc YM theory. Our result for Gamma_{CS}/(sT), where s is entropy density and T is temperature, varies slowly at high T and increases monotonically as T approaches the transition temperature from above. We also study the retarded two-point function of tr[F ^ F] with non-zero frequency and momentum. Our results suggest that the CP-odd phenomena that may potentially occur in heavy ion collisions could be controlled by an excitation with energy on the order of the lightest axial glueball mass.
