Giant localised spin-Peltier effect due to ultrafast domainwalls motion in antiferromagnetic metals

Spin thermo-electric phenomena have attracted wide attention recently, e.g. the Spin Peltier effect (SPE) heat generation by magnonic spin currents. Here we find that the Spin Peltier ef-fect also manifests as a heat wave accompanying fast moving magnetic textures. High speed andextreme magnetic excitation localisation are paramount for efficient transfer of energy from thespin-degrees of freedom to electrons and lattice. While satisfying both conditions is subject to se-vere restrictions in ferromagnets, we find that domain walls in antiferomagnets can overcome theselimitations due to their potential ultrahigh mobility and ultra-small widths originating from the rel-ativistic contraction. To illustrate our findings, we show that electric current driven domain wallmotion in the antiferromagnetic metal Mn2Au can carry a localised heat wave with the maximumamplitude up to 1 K . Since domain walls are well localised nanoscale magnetic objects, this effecthas the potential for nanoscale heating sensing and functionalities.

Temperature scaling of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction in the spin wave spectrum

The temperature scaling of the micromagnetic Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya exchange interaction is calculated for the whole range of temperature. We use Green's function theory to derive the finite-temperature spin wave spectrum of ferromagnetic systems described by a classical atomistic spin model Hamiltonian. Within this model, we find universal expressions for the temperature scaling not only of the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction but also of the Heisenberg exchange stiffness and the single-ion anisotropy. In the spirit of multiscale models, we establish a clear connection between the atomistic interactions and the temperature-dependent coefficients in the spin wave spectrum and in the micromagnetic free energy functional. We demonstrate that the corrections to mean-field theory or the random phase approximation for the temperature scaling of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya and Heisenberg exchange interactions assume very similar forms. In the presence of thermal fluctuations and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction an anisotropy-like term emerges in the spin wave spectrum which, at low temperature, increases with temperature, in contrast to the decreasing single-ion anisotropy. We evaluate the accuracy of the theoretical method by comparing it to the spin wave spectrum calculated from Monte Carlo simulations.

Atomistic modeling of magnetization reversal modes in $L1_{0}$ FePt nanodots with magnetically soft edges

Nanopatterned FePt nano-dots often exhibit low coercivity and a broad switching field distribution, which could arise due to edge damage during the patterning process causing a reduction in the $L1_{0}$ ordering required for a high magnetocrystalline anisotropy. Using an atomistic spin model, we study the magnetization reversal behavior of $L1_{0}$ FePt nanodots with soft magnetic edges. We show that reversal is initiated by nucleation for the whole range of edge widths studied. For narrow soft edges the individual nucleation events dominate reversal; for wider edges, multiple nucleation at the edge creates a circular domain wall at the interface which precedes complete reversal. Our simulations compare well with available analytical theories. The increased edge width further reduces and saturates the required nucleation field. The nucleation field and the activation volume manipulate the thermally induced switching field distribution. By control of the properties of dot edges using proper patterning methods, it should be possible to realize exchange spring bit patterned media without additional soft layers.
