Restricted Exclusion Processes without Particle Conservation Flows to Directed Percolation

Absorbing phase transition in restricted exclusion processes are characterized by simple integer exponents. We show that this critical behaviour flows to the directed percolation (DP) universality class when particle conservation is broken suitably. The same transition, when studied using the average density as the controlling parameter, yields critical exponents quite different from DP; we argue that these exponents are actually related to DP by a scaling factor $1/β_{DP}.$ These conclusions also apply to conserved lattice gas in one dimension.

Driven k-mers: Correlations in space and time

Steady state properties of hard objects with exclusion interaction and a driven motion along a one-dimensional periodic lattice are investigated. The process is a generalization of the asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP) to particles of length k, and is called the k-ASEP. Here, we analyze both static and dynamic properties of the k-ASEP. Density correlations are found to display interesting features, such as pronounced oscillations in both space and time, as a consequence of the extended length of the particles. At long times, the density autocorrelation decays exponentially in time, except at a special k-dependent density when it decays as a power law. In the limit of large k at a finite density of occupied sites, the appropriately scaled system reduces to a nonequilibrium generalization of the Tonks gas describing the motion of hard rods along a continuous line. This allows us to obtain in a simple way the known two-particle distribution for the Tonks gas. For large but finite k, we also obtain the leading-order correction to the Tonks result.

Identifying universality classes of absorbing phase transitions by block renormalization

We propose a renormalization scheme that can be used as a reliable method to identify universality classes of absorbing phase transitions. Following the spirit of Wilson's block-spin renormalization group, the lattice is divided into blocks, assigning to them an effective state by a suitable Boolean function of the interior degrees of freedom. The effective states of adjacent blocks form certain patterns which are shown to occur with universal probability ratios if the underlying process is critical. Measuring these probability ratios in the limit of large block sizes one obtains a set of universal numbers as an individual fingerprint for each universality class.

A threshold induced phase transition in the kinetic exchange models

We study an ideal-gas-like model where the particles exchange energy stochastically, through energy conserving scattering processes, which take place if and only if at least one of the two particles has energy below a certain energy threshold (interactions are initiated by such low energy particles). This model has an intriguing phase transition in the sense that there is a critical value of the energy threshold, below which the number of particles in the steady state goes to zero, and above which the average number of particles in the steady state is non-zero. This phase transition is associated with standard features like "critical slowing down" and non-trivial values of some critical exponents characterizing the variation of thermodynamic quantities near the threshold energy. The features are exhibited not only in the mean field version but also in the lattice versions.

A Novel Approach to Discontinuous Bond Percolation Transition

We introduce a bond percolation procedure on a $D$-dimensional lattice where two neighbouring sites are connected by $N$ channels, each operated by valves at both ends. Out of a total of $N$, randomly chosen $n$ valves are open at every site. A bond is said to connect two sites if there is at least one channel between them, which has open valves at both ends. We show analytically that in all spatial dimensions, this system undergoes a discontinuous percolation transition in the $N\to \infty$ limit when $γ=\frac{\ln n}{\ln N}$ crosses a threshold. It must be emphasized that, in contrast to the ordinary percolation models, here the transition occurs even in one dimensional systems, albeit discontinuously. We also show that a special kind of discontinuous percolation occurs only in one dimension when $N$ depends on the system size.

Bimodal response in periodically driven diffusive systems

We study the response of one dimensional diffusive systems, consisting of particles interacting via symmetric or asymmetric exclusion, to time-periodic driving from two reservoirs coupled to the ends. The dynamical response of the system can be characterized in terms of the structure factor. We find an interesting frequency dependent response -- the current carrying majority excitons cyclically crosses over from a short wavelength mode to a long wavelength mode with an intermediate regime of coexistence. This effect being boundary driven, decays inversely with system size. Analytic calculations show that this behavior is common to diffusive systems, both in absence and presence of correlations.

Discontinuous Absorbing State Transition in $(1+1)$ Dimension

A $(1+1)$ dimensional model of directed percolation is introduced where sites on a tilted square lattice are connected to their neighbours by $N$ channels, operated at both ends by valves which are either open or closed. The spreading fluid is assumed to propagate from any site to the neighbours in a specified direction only through those channels which have open valves at both sites. We show that the system undergoes a discontinuous absorbing state transition in the large $N$ limit when the number of open valves at each site $n$ crosses a threshold value $n_c=\sqrt N.$ Remarkable dynamical properties of discontinuous transitions, like hysteresis and existence of two well separated fluctuating phases near the critical point are also observed. The transition is found to be discontinuous in all $(d+1)$ dimensions.

Particle Ordering in Zero Range Process : Exact spatial correlations of the corresponding exclusion models

A one dimensional exclusion process is introduced where particles hop to a neighbouring vacant site with a rate that depends on the size of the block they belong to. This model is equivalent to a zero range process (ZRP) and shares the same steady state distribution. However positional ordering is lost in this mapping and spatial correlations which depend on position indices can not be calculated directly from the ZRP equivalence. We devise a method to calculate these correlations and illustrate it by reproducing certain known results. Unexplored correlations in some other model systems are also investigated. This method can be generically used to find exact correlations of one dimensional exclusion processes which has ZRP correspondence.

TASEP on a ring with internal degrees of freedom

A totally asymmetric exclusion process on a ring with $ν$ non-conserved internal degrees of freedom, where particles hop forward with a rate that depends on their internal state, has been studied. We show, using a mapping of the model to a zero range process with $ν$ different kinds of boxes, that steady state weights can be written in a matrix product form and calculate the spatial correlations exactly. A comparison of the model with an equivalent conserved system reveals that unequal hopping rates of particles belonging to different internal states is responsible for the non-trivial correlations.

Berry phase and fidelity susceptibility of the three-qubit Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick ground state

Berry phases and quantum fidelities for interacting spins have attracted considerable attention, in particular in relation to entanglement properties of spin systems and quantum phase transitions. These efforts mainly focus either on spin pairs or the thermodynamic infinite spin limit, while studies of the multipartite case of a finite number of spins are rare. Here, we analyze Berry phases and quantum fidelities of the energetic ground state of a Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model consisting of three spin-1/2 particles (qubits). We find explicit expressions for the Berry phase and fidelity susceptibility of the full system as well as the mixed state Berry phase and partial-state fidelity susceptibility of its one- and two-qubit subsystems. We demonstrate a realization of a nontrivial magnetic monopole structure associated with local, coordinated rotations of the three-qubit system around the external magnetic field.

Active Absorbing State Phase Transition Beyond Directed Percolation : A Class of Exactly Solvable Models

We introduce and solve a model of hardcore particles on a one dimensional periodic lattice which undergoes an active-absorbing state phase transition at finite density. In this model an occupied site is defined to be active if its left neighbour is occupied and the right neighbour is vacant. Particles from such active sites hop stochastically to their right. We show that, both the density of active sites and the survival probability vanish as the particle density is decreased below half. The critical exponents and spatial correlations of the model are calculated exactly using the matrix product ansatz. Exact analytical study of several variations of the model reveals that these non-equilibrium phase transitions belong to a new universality class different from the generic active-absorbing-state phase transition, namely directed percolation.

Modeling wealth distribution in growing markets

We introduce an auto-regressive model which captures the growing nature of realistic markets. In our model agents do not trade with other agents, they interact indirectly only through a market. Change of their wealth depends, linearly on how much they invest, and stochastically on how much they gain from the noisy market. The average wealth of the market could be fixed or growing. We show that in a market where investment capacity of agents differ, average wealth of agents generically follow the Pareto-law. In few cases, the individual distribution of wealth of every agent could also be obtained exactly. We also show that the underlying dynamics of other well studied kinetic models of markets can be mapped to the dynamics of our auto-regressive model.
