Dynamics and Sizes of the Fireball at Freeze-out

Analyzing the m_t-spectrum and two-particle correlations of negative hadrons from 158 AGeV/c Pb+Pb collisions at slightly forward rapidities we find a (thermal) freeze-out temperature of about 100 MeV and transverse flow with approximately 0.55c. The M_t-dependence of the correlation radii prefers a box-like transverse density profile over a Gaussian. From an analysis of the pion phase-space density we find pion chemical potential of approximately 60 MeV at thermal freeze-out.

Space-time analysis: HBT at SPS and RHIC

In this review talk, I first summarize the conclusions which can be drawn from a particle interferometric analysis of CERN SPS data and then I address related questions which are relevant for the upcoming experiments at RHIC.

Particle Interferometry for Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collisions

In this report we give a detailed account on Hanbury Brown/Twiss (HBT) particle interferometric methods for relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These exploit identical two-particle correlations to gain access to the space-time geometry and dynamics of the final freeze-out stage. The connection between the measured correlations in momentum space and the phase-space structure of the particle emitter is established, both with and without final state interactions. Suitable Gaussian parametrizations for the two-particle correlation function are derived and the physical interpretation of their parameters is explained. After reviewing various model studies, we show how a combined analysis of single- and two-particle spectra allows to reconstruct the final state of relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Resonance contributions to HBT correlation radii

We study the effect of resonance decays on intensity interferometry for heavy ion collisions. Collective expansion of the source leads to a dependence of the two-particle correlation function on the pair momentum K. This opens the possibility to reconstruct the dynamics of the source from the K-dependence of the measured HBT radii. Here we address the question to what extent resonance decays can fake such a flow signal. Within a simple parametrization for the emission function we present a comprehensive analysis of the interplay of flow and resonance decays on the one- and two-particle spectra. We discuss in detail the non-Gaussian features of the correlation function introduced by long-lived resonances and the resulting problems in extracting meaningful HBT radii. We propose to define them in terms of the second order q-moments of the correlator C(q, K). We show that this yields a more reliable characterisation of the correlator in terms of its width and the correlation strength `lambda' than other commonly used fit procedures. The normalized fourth-order q-moments (kurtosis) provide a quantitative measure for the non-Gaussian features of the correlator. At least for the class of models studied here, the kurtosis helps separating effects from expansion flow and resonance decays, and provides the cleanest signal to distinguish between scenarios with and without transverse flow.

Two-particle interferometry for non-central heavy-ion collisions

In non-central heavy ion collisions, identical two particle Hanbury-Brown/Twiss (HBT) correlations C(K,q) depend on the azimuthal direction of the pair momentum K. We investigate the consequences for a harmonic analysis of the corresponding HBT radius parameters. Our discussion includes both, a model- independent analysis of these parameters in the Gaussian approximation, and the study of a class of hydrodynamical models which mimic essential geometrical and dynamical properties of peripheral heavy ion collisions. Also, we discuss the additional geometrical and dynamical information contained in the harmonic coefficients of these HBT radius parameters. The leading contribution of their first and second harmonics are found to satisfy simple constraints. This allows for a minimal, azimuthally sensitive parametrization of all first and second harmonic coefficients in terms of only two additional fit parameters. We determine to what extent these parameters can be extracted from experimental data despite finite multiplicity fluctuations and the resulting uncertainty in the reconstruction of the reaction plane.

Towards Reconstructing the Final Stage of Heavy Ion Collisions

A Fourier inversion problem lies at the heart of determining spatio-temporal characteristica of the final stage of a heavy ion collision: From the measured two-particle momentum correlations C(p_1,p_2) of identical particles, pions say, a Hanbury-Brown /Twiss (HBT) interferometric analysis aims at extracting as much information as possible about the Wigner phase space density S(x,p) of pion emitting sources in the collision region. Here, we discuss how this analysis allows to separate the effects of temperature and transverse flow which cannot be disentangled completely on the basis of single-particle spectra.

Gauge Invariance of Resummation Schemes: The QCD Partition Function

We pick up a method originally developed by Cheng and Tsai for vacuum perturbation theory which allows to test the consistency of different sets of Feynman rules on a purely diagrammatic level, making explicit loop calculations superfluous. We generalize it to perturbative calculations in thermal field theory and we show that it can be adapted to check the gauge invariance of physical quantities calculated in improved perturbation schemes. Specifically, we extend this diagrammatic technique to a simple resummation scheme in imaginary time perturbation theory. As an application, we check up to O(g^4) in general covariant gauge the gauge invariance of the result for the QCD partition function which was recently obtained in Feynman gauge.

A new class of Hanbury-Brown/Twiss parameters

In heavy ion collisions resonances can create strong non-Gaussian effects in the 2-pion correlation data. Hence, the commonly used Gaussian fit parameters do not fully characterize these correlators. We suggest a different set of HBT parameters which does not presuppose a particular shape of the correlator and allows to extract additional (non-Gaussian) information. Within a simple model for an expanding source including resonance decays it is shown that this additional information provides a clean distinction between scenarios with and without transverse flow.

Transverse Momentum Dependence of Hanbury-Brown/Twiss Correlation Radii

The transverse momentum dependence of Hanbury-Brown/Twiss (HBT) interferometry radii for 2-body correlation functions provides experimental access to the collective dynamics in heavy-ion collisions. We present an analytical approximation scheme for these HBT radii which combines the recently derived model-independent expressions with an approximate determination of the saddle point of the emission function. The method is illustrated for a longitudinally boost-invariant hydrodynamical model of a heavy ion collision with freeze-out on a sharp hypersurface. The analytical approximation converges rapidly to the width of the numerically computed correlation function and reproduces correctly its exact transverse momentum dependence. However, higher order corrections within our approximation scheme are essential, and the previously published lowest order results with simple $m_{\perp}$ scaling behaviour are quantitatively and qualitatively unreliable.
