Constructing the Cubus simus and the Dodecaedron simum via paper folding

The archimedean solids Cubus simus (snub cube) and Dodecaedron simum (snub dodecahedron) cannot be constructed by ruler and compass. We explain that for general reasons their vertices can be constructed via paper folding on the faces of a cube, respectively dodecahedron, and we present explicit folding constructions. The construction of the Cubus simus is particularly elegant. We also review and prove the construction rules of the other Archimedean solids.

Foliations in deformation spaces of local G-shtukas

We study local G-shtukas with level structure over a base scheme whose Newton polygons are constant on the base. We show that after a finite base change and after passing to an étale covering, such a local G-shtuka is isogenous to a completely slope divisible one, generalizing corresponding results for p-divisible groups by Oort and Zink. As an application we establish a product structure up to finite morphism on the closed Newton stratum of the universal deformation of a local G-shtuka, similarly to Oort's foliations for p-divisible groups and abelian varieties. This also yields bounds on the dimensions of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties and proves equidimensionality of affine Deligne-Lusztig varieties in the affine Grassmannian.

Period Spaces for Hodge Structures in Equal Characteristic

We develop the analog in equal positive characteristic of Fontaine's theory for crystalline Galois representations of a p-adic field. In particular we describe the analog of Fontaine's functor which assigns to a crystalline Galois representation an isocrystal with a Hodge filtration. In equal characteristic the role of isocrystals and Hodge filtrations is played by z-isocrystals and Hodge-Pink structures. The latter were invented by Pink. Our first main result in this article is the analog of the Colmez-Fontaine Theorem that "weakly admissible implies admissible". Next we construct period spaces for Hodge-Pink structures on a fixed z-isocrystal. These period spaces are analogs of the Rapoport-Zink period spaces for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals in mixed characteristic and likewise are rigid analytic spaces. For our period spaces we prove the analog of a conjecture of Rapoport and Zink stating the existence of a "universal local system" on a Berkovich open subspace of the period space. As a consequence of "weakly admissible implies admissible" this Berkovich open subspace contains every classical rigid analytic point of the period space. As the principal tool to demonstrate these results we use the analog of Kedlaya's Slope Filtration Theorem which we also formulate and prove here.

Pure Anderson Motives and Abelian Sheaves over Finite Fields

Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In this article we develop their theory regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and local shtukas. The later are the analog of p-divisible groups. We investigate which pure t-motives are semisimple, that is, isogenous to direct sums of simple ones. We give examples for pure t-motives which are not semisimple. Over finite fields the semisimplicity is equivalent to the semisimplicity of the endomorphism algebra, but also this fails over infinite fields. Still over finite fields we study the endomorphism rings of pure t-motives and obtain answers which are similar to Tate's famous results for abelian varieties. Finally we clarify the relation of pure t-motives to the abelian τ-sheaves introduced by the second author for the purpose of constructing moduli spaces. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories.

Pure Anderson Motives and Abelian τ-Sheaves

Pure t-motives were introduced by G. Anderson as higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogs of abelian varieties in the arithmetic of function fields. In order to construct moduli spaces for pure t-motives the second author has previously introduced the concept of abelian τ-sheaf. In this article we clarify the relation between pure t-motives and abelian τ-sheaves. We obtain an equivalence of the respective quasi-isogeny categories. Furthermore, we develop the elementary theory of both structures regarding morphisms, isogenies, Tate modules, and local shtukas. The later are the analogs of p-divisible groups.

Pure Anderson Motives over Finite Fields

In the arithmetic of function fields Drinfeld modules play the role that elliptic curves take on in the arithmetic of number fields. As higher dimensional generalizations of Drinfeld modules, and as the appropriate analogues of abelian varieties, G. Anderson introduced pure t-motives. In this article we study the arithmetic of the later. Still over finite fields we study the endomorphism rings of pure t-motives and criteria for the existence of isogenies. We obtain answers which are similar to Tate's famous results for abelian varieties.

On period spaces for p-divisible groups

In their book Rapoport and Zink constructed rigid analytic period spaces for Fontaine's filtered isocrystals, and period morphisms from moduli spaces of p-divisible groups to some of these period spaces. We determine the image of these period morphisms, thereby contributing to a question of Grothendieck. We give examples showing that only in rare cases the image is all of the Rapoport-Zink period space.

Change of Coefficients for Drinfeld Modules, Shtuka, and Abelian Sheaves

We study the passage from Drinfeld-A'-modules to Drinfeld-A-modules for a given finite flat inclusion A \subset A'. We show that this defines a morphism from the moduli space of Drinfeld-A'-modules to the moduli space of Drinfeld-A-modules which is proper but in general not representable. For Drinfeld-Anderson shtuka and abelian sheaves instead of Drinfeld modules we obtain the same results.

Uniformizable families of $t$-motives

Abelian $t$-modules and the dual notion of $t$-motives were introduced by Anderson as a generalization of Drinfeld modules. For such Anderson defined and studied the important concept of uniformizability. It is an interesting question, and the main objective of the present article to see how uniformizability behaves in families. Since uniformizability is an analytic notion, we have to work with families over a rigid analytic base. We provide many basic results, and in fact a large part of this article concentrates on laying foundations for studying the above question. Building on these, we obtain a generalization of a uniformizability criterion of Anderson and, among other things, we establish that the locus of uniformizability is Berkovich open.

Uniformizing the Stacks of Abelian Sheaves

Elliptic sheaves (which are related to Drinfeld modules) were introduced by Drinfeld and further studied by Laumon--Rapoport--Stuhler and others. They can be viewed as function field analogues of elliptic curves and hence are objects "of dimension 1". Their higher dimensional generalisations are called abelian sheaves. In the analogy between function fields and number fields, abelian sheaves are counterparts of abelian varieties. In this article we study the moduli spaces of abelian sheaves and prove that they are algebraic stacks. We further transfer results of Cerednik--Drinfeld and Rapoport--Zink on the uniformization of Shimura varieties to the setting of abelian sheaves. Actually the analogy of the Cerednik--Drinfeld uniformization is nothing but the uniformization of the moduli schemes of Drinfeld modules by the Drinfeld upper half space. Our results generalise this uniformization. The proof closely follows the ideas of Rapoport--Zink. In particular, analogies of $p$-divisible groups play an important role. As a crucial intermediate step we prove that in a family of abelian sheaves with good reduction at infinity, the set of points where the abelian sheaf is uniformizable in the sense of Anderson, is formally closed.
