An EZ-structure for the mapping class group

We construct a boundary for the mapping class group Mod(S) of a surface S of finite type. The action of Mod(S) on this boundary is minimal, strongly proximal and topologically free. The boundary is the boundary of an EZ-structure for Mod(S).

The geometry of branched coverings of hyperbolic manifolds

We discuss geometric properties of covers of closed hyperbolic manifolds of dimension $n\geq 3$, branched along a totally geodesic codimension two submanifold $Σ$. The results are mostly known to the experts but hard to find in the literature in this form.

On random walks on the mapping class group

We define an electrification of the curve graph of a surface S of finite type and use it to identify the Poisson boundary of a random walk on the mapping class group of S with some logarithmic moment condition as a stationary measure on the space of minimal and maximal geodesic laminations on $S$, equipped with the Hausdorff topology.

Hitchin grafting representations I: Geometry

We give a geometric interpretation of Fock--Goncharov positivity and show that bending deformations of Fuchsian representations stabilize a uniform Finsler quasi-convex disk in the symmetric space $\mathrm{PSL}_d(\mathbb R)/\mathrm{PSO}(d)$.

Hitchin grafting representations II: Dynamics

The Hitchin component of the character variety of representations of a surface group $π_1(S)$ into $\mathrm{PSL}_d(\mathbb{R})$ for some $d \geq 3$ can be equipped with a pressure metric whose restriction to the Fuchsian locus equals the Weil--Petersson metric up to a constant factor. We show that if the genus of $S$ is at least $3$, then the Fuchsian locus contains quasi-convex subsets of infinite diameter for the Weil--Petersson metric whose diameter for the path metric of the pressure metric is finite. This is established through showing that biinfinite paths of bending deformations have controlled bounded length.

Symbolic dynamics for the Teichmueller flow

Let Q be a component of a stratum of abelian or quadratic differentials on an oriented surface of genus $g\geq 0$ with $m\geq 0$ punctures and $3g-3+m\geq 2$. We construct a subshift of finite type $(Ω,σ)$ and a Borel suspension of $(Ω,σ)$ which admits a finite-to-one semi-conjugacy into the Teichmueller flow $Φ^t$ on Q. This is used to show that the $Φ^t$-invariant Lebesgue measure on Q is the unique measure of maximal entropy.

Submanifold projections and hyperbolicity in ${\rm Out}(F_n)$

The free splitting graph of a free group $F_n$ with $n\geq 2$ generators is a hyperbolic ${\rm Out}(F_n)$-graph which has a geometric realization as a sphere graph in the connected sum of $n$ copies of $S^1\times S^2$. We use this realization to construct submanifold projections of the free splitting graph into the free splitting graphs of proper free factors. This is used to construct for $n\geq 3$ a new hyperbolic ${\rm Out}(F_n)$-graph. If $n=3$, then every exponentially growing element acts on this graph with positive translation length.

Periodic orbits in the thin part of strata

Let S be a closed oriented surface of genus $g\geq 0$ with $n\geq 0$ punctures and $3g-3+n\geq 5$. Let $Q$ be a connected component of a stratum in the moduli space Q(S) of area one meromorphic quadratic differentials on S with n simple poles at the punctures or in the moduli space H(S) of abelian differentials on S if n=0. For a compact subset K of Q(S) or of H(S), we show that the asymptotic growth rate of the number of periodic orbits for the Teichmueller flow on Q which are entirely contained in Q-K is at least h(Q)-1 where h(Q)>0 is the complex dimension of Q.

Actions of finitely generated groups on compact metric spaces

Let $Γ$ be a finitely generated group which admits an action by homeomorphisms on a compact metrizable space $X$. We show that there is a metric on $X$ defining the original topology such that for this metric, the action is by bi-Lipschitz transformations.

Spotted disk and sphere graphs

The disk graph of a handlebody H of gneus $g\geq 2$ with $m\geq 0$ marked points on the boundary is the graph whose vertices are isotopy classes of disks disjoint from the marked points and where two vertices are connected by an edge of length one if they can be realized disjointly. We show that for m=2 the disk graph contains quasi-isometrically embedded copies of $\mathbb{R}^2$. Furthermore, the sphere graph of the doubled handlebody of genus $g\geq 4$ with two marked points contains for every $n\geq 1$ a quasi-isometrically embedded copy of $\mathbb{R}^n$.

Stability of Einstein metrics and effective hyperbolization in large Hempel distance

Extending earlier work of Tian, we show that if a manifold admits a metric that is almost hyperbolic in a suitable sense, then there exists an Einstein metric that is close to the given metric in the $C^{2,α}$-topology. In dimension $3$ the original manifold only needs to have finite volume, and the volume can be arbitrarily large. Applications include a new proof of the hyperbolization of $3$-manifolds of large Hempel distance yielding some new geometric control on the hyperbolic metric, and an analytic proof of Dehn filling and drilling that allows the filling and drilling of arbitrary many cusps and tubes.

Generating the spin mapping class group by Dehn twists

Let f be a Z/2Z-spin structureon a closed surface S of genus g>3. We determine a generating set of the stabilizer of f in the mapping class group of S consisting of Dehn twists about an explicit collection of 2g+1 curves in S. If g=3 then we also determine a generating set of the stabilizer of an odd Z/2Z-spin structure consisting of Dehn twists about a collection of 6 curves.

Spotted disk and sphere graphs I

The disk graph of a handlebody H of genus g at least 2 with m marked points on the boundary is the graph whose vertices are isotopy classes of disks disjoint from the marked points and where two vertices are connected by an edge if they can be realized disjointly. We show that for m=1 the disk graph contains quasi-isometrically embedded copies of R^2. The same holds true for the sphere graph of the double handlebody with one marked point provided that g is even.

On the cohomology of strata of abelian differentials

For g>2 we study the cohomology classes in the closure of a stratum of abelian differentials defined by the boundary strata of codimension one. As an application, we find an explicit stratification of the spin moduli space for an odd spin structure consisting of g-1 strata D_j of codimension j-1 such that D_j does not contain a complete subvariety for all j. We also recover some results of Koroktin and Zograf and of Chen using a unified topological approach.
