Topological properties of Reeb orbits on boundaries of star-shaped domains in R4

Let c be a periodic Reeb orbit on the boundary S of a compact star-shaped domain C in R4. We show that if there is an immersed symplectic disc f in C with boundary c then the self-linking number lk(c) of c equals 2 tan(f)-1 where tan(f) is the tangential self-intersection number of f. We also show that if C is convex and if the principal curvatures of S are suitably pointwise pinched then the self-linking number of a periodic Reeb orbit of Maslov index 3 equals -1.

Rank-one isometries of proper CAT(0)-spaces

Let G be a non-elementary group of isometries of a proper CAT(0)-space with limit set L. We survey properties of the action of G on L under the assumption that G contains a rank-one element. Among others, we show that there is a dense orbit for the action of G on the complement of the diagonal in LxL and that pairs of fixed points of rank-one elements are dense in the complement of the diagonal of LxL.

Isometry groups of proper CAT(0)-spaces

Let G be a closed subgroup of the isometry group of a proper CAT(0)-space X. We show that if G is non-elementary and contains a rank-one element then its second bounded cohomology group with coefficients in the regular representation is non-trivial. As a consequence, up to passing to an open subgroup of finite index, either G is a compact extension of a totally disconnected group or G is a compact extension of a simple Lie group of rank one.

Geometry of the mapping class groups I: Boundary amenability

We construct a geometric model for the mapping class group M of a non-exceptional oriented surface of finite type and use it to show that the action of M on the compact Hausdorff space of complete geodesic laminations is topologically amenable. As a consequence, the Novikov higher signature conjecture holds for every subgroup of M.

Geometry of the mapping class groups III: Quasi-isometric rigidity

Let S be an oriented surface of finite type of genus g with m punctures and where 3g-3+m>1. We show that the mapping class group M(S) of S is quasi-isometrically rigid. We also give a different proof of the following result of Behrstock and Minsky: The homological dimension of the asmyptotic cone of M(S) of S equals 3g-3+m.

Geometry of the complex of curves and of Teichmueller space

In this survey paper we give a proof of hyperbolicity of the complex of curves for a non-exceptional surface S of finite type combining ideas of Masur/Minsky and Bowditch. We also shortly discuss the relation between the geometry of the complex of curves and the geometry of Teichmueller space.

Bounded cohomology and isometry groups of hyperbolic spaces

Let X be an arbitrary hyperbolic geodesic metric space and let G be a countable non-elementary weakly acylindrical group of isometries of X. We show that the second bounded cohomology group of G with real coefficients or with coefficients in the regular representation is infinite dimensional. The result holds for any subgroup of the mapping class group of a non-exceptional surface of finite type not containing a normal subgroup which virtually split as a direct product.

Bounded cohomology, cross ratios and cocycles

We use cross ratios to describe second real continuous bounded cohomology for locally compact topological groups. We also derive a rigidity result for cocycles with values in the isometry group of a proper hyperbolic geodesic metric space.

Word hyperbolic extensions of surface groups

Let S be a closed surface of genus at least 2. We show that a finitely generated group G which is an extension of the fundamental group H of S is word hyperbolic if and only the orbit map of the quotient group G/H on the complex of curves is a quasi-isometric embedding. This in turn is equivalent to G/H being convex cocompact in the sense of Farb and Mosher.

Cocycles, symplectic structures and intersection

We investigate the cross ratio for closed negatively curved manifolds. As one of several applications, we obtain that for two such homotopy equivalent manifolds M and N, the following is true : If M and N have the same marked length spectrum and if the Anosov splitting for M is C^1 then M and N have the same volume.
