Composition of bispans of $G$-sets and plethysm

Let $P(G)$ be the Grothendieck ring of the semiring of endomorphisms of the point in the $1$-category of bispans of finite $G$-sets for a finite group $G$. This is the bispan analogue of the Burnside ring of $G$. The ring $P(G)$ admits a third operation from composition of bispans. We produce a character map for $P(G)$ landing in a plethory built out of polynomial rings and the poset of conjugacy classes of subgroups of $G$. We prove that the character map sends composition of bispans to the plethysm operation -- which is a generalization of composition of polynomials.

Saturated and linear isometric transfer systems for cyclic groups of order $p^mq^n$

Transfer systems are combinatorial objects which classify $N_\infty$ operads up to homotopy. By results of A. Blumberg and M. Hill, every transfer system associated to a linear isometries operad is also saturated (closed under a particular two-out-of-three property). We investigate saturated and linear isometric transfer systems with equivariance group $C_{p^mq^n}$, the cyclic group of order $p^mq^n$ for $p,q$ distinct primes and $m,n\ge 0$. We give a complete enumeration of saturated transfer systems for $C_{p^mq^n}$. We also prove J. Rubin's saturation conjecture for $C_{pq^n}$; this says that every saturated transfer system is realized by a linear isometries operad for $p,q$ sufficiently large (greater than $3$ in this case).

Orlicz-Sobolev inequalities and the Dirichlet problem for infinitely degenerate elliptic operators

We investigate a connection between solvability of the Dirichlet problem for an infinitely degenerate elliptic operator and the validity of an Orlicz-Sobolev inequality in the associated subunit metric space. For subelliptic operators it is known that the classical Sobolev inequality is sufficient and almost necessary for the Dirichlet problem to be solvable with a quantitative bound on the solution [11]. When the degeneracy is of infinite type, a weaker Orlicz-Sobolev inequality seems to be the right substitute [7]. In this paper we investigate this connection further and reduce the gap between necessary and sufficient conditions for solvability of the Dirichlet problem.
