In the Middle, Not on Top: AI-Mediated Communication for Patient-Provider Care Relationships

Relationship-centered care relies on trust and meaningful connection. As AI enters clinical settings, we must ask not just what it can do, but how it should be positioned to support these values. We examine a "middle, not top" approach where AI mediates communication without usurping human judgment. Through studies of CLEAR, an asynchronous messaging system, we show how this configuration addresses real-world constraints like time pressure and uneven health literacy. We find that mediator affordances (e.g., availability, neutrality) redistribute interpretive work and reduce relational friction. Ultimately, we frame AI mediation as relational infrastructure, highlighting critical design tensions around framing power and privacy.

VAIR: Visual Analytics for Injury Risk Exploration in Sports

Injury prevention in sports requires understanding how bio-mechanical risks emerge from movement patterns captured in real-world scenarios. However, identifying and interpreting injury prone events from raw video remains difficult and time-consuming. We present VAIR, a visual analytics system that supports injury risk analysis using 3D human motion reconstructed from sports video. VAIR combines pose estimation, bio-mechanical simulation, and synchronized visualizations to help users explore how joint-level risk indicators evolve over time. Domain experts can inspect movement segments through temporally aligned joint angles, angular velocity, and internal forces to detect patterns associated with known injury mechanisms. Through case studies involving Achilles tendon and Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries in basketball, we show that VAIR enables more efficient identification and interpretation of risky movements. Expert feedback confirms that VAIR improves diagnostic reasoning and supports both retrospective analysis and proactive intervention planning.

Collaborative XRTactics: A Formative Study on Tactical Communication in Outdoor Team Sports

In team sports, effective tactical communication is crucial for success, particularly in the fast-paced and complex environment of outdoor athletics. This paper investigates the challenges faced in transmitting strategic plans to players and explores potential solutions using eXtended Reality (XR) technologies. We conducted a formative study involving interviews with 4 Division I professional soccer coaches, 4 professional players, 2 college club coaches, and 2 college club players, as well as a survey among 17 Division I players. The study identified key requirements for tactical communication tools, including the need for rapid communication, minimal disruption to game flow, reduced cognitive load, clear visualization for all players, and enhanced auditory clarity. Based on these insights, we propose a potential solution - a Mobile Augmented Reality (AR) system designed to address these challenges by providing real-time, intuitive tactical visualization and communication. The system aims to improve strategic planning and execution, thereby enhancing team performance and cohesion. This work represents a significant step towards integrating XR technologies into sports coaching, offering a modern and practical solution for real-time tactical communication.
