Fragmentation, domain formation and atom number fluctuations of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We theoretically study the loading of a two-species Bose-Einstein condensate to an optical lattice in a tightly-confined one-dimensional trap. Due to quantum fluctuations the relative inter and intra species phase coherence between the atoms and the on-site atom number fluctuations are reduced in the miscible regime. For the immiscible case the fluctuations are enhanced and the atoms form metastable interleaved spatially separated domains where the domain length and its fluctuations are affected by quantum fluctuations.

Antiferromagnetism in a bosonic mixture of rubidium ($^{87}$Rb) and potassium ($^{41}$K)

We simulate the experimental possibility of observing the antiferromagnetic (AF) order in the bosonic mixtures of rubidium ($^{87}$Rb) and potassium ($^{41}$K) in a two-dimensional optical lattice in the presence of harmonic confinement. By tuning the interspecies interactions and the lattice heights we have found the ground states, within the mean-field approximation, that interpolate from the phase separation to the AF order. For a moderate lattice height the coexistence of the Mott and AF phase is possible for the Rb atoms while the K atoms remain in the AF-superfluid phase. This observation may provide an experimental feasibility to hitherto unobserved AF order for $^{87}$Rb - $^{41}$K mixture.

Correlated bosons in a one-dimensional optical lattice: Effects of the trapping potential and of quasiperiodic disorder

We investigate the effect of the trapping potential on the quantum phases of strongly correlated ultracold bosons in one-dimensional periodic and quasiperiodic optical lattices. By means of a decoupling meanfield approach, we characterize the ground state of the system and its behavior under variation of the harmonic trapping, as a function of the total number of atoms. For a small atom number the system shows an incompressible Mott-insulating phase, as the size of the cloud remains unaffected when the trapping potential is varied. When the quasiperiodic potential is added the system develops a metastable-disordered phase which is neither compressible nor Mott insulating. This state is characteristic of quasidisorder in the presence of a strong trapping potential.

Pulsating and persistent vector solitons in a Bose-Einstein condensate in a lattice upon phase separation instability

We study numerically the outcome of the phase separation instability of a dual-species Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice. When only one excitation mode is unstable a bound pair of a bright and dark soliton-like structures periodically appears and disappears, whereas for more than one unstable mode a persistent soliton-antisoliton pair develops. The oscillating soliton represents a regime where the two-species condensate neither remains phase-separated nor is dynamically stable.

Nonlinear Phenomenology from Quantum Mechanics: Soliton in a Lattice

We study a soliton in an optical lattice holding bosonic atoms quantum mechanically using both an exact numerical solution and quantum Monte Carlo simulations. The computation of the state is combined with an explicit account of the measurements of the numbers of the atoms at the lattice sites. In particular, importance sampling in the quantum Monte Carlo method arguably produces faithful simulations of individual experiments. Even though the quantum state is invariant under lattice translations, an experiment may show a noisy version of the localized classical soliton.

Quantum dynamics of instability-induced pulsations of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a one-dimensional optical lattice in the limit of weak atom-atom interactions, including an approximate model for quantum fluctuations. A pulsating dynamical instability in which atoms periodically collect together and subsequently disperse back into the initial homogeneous state may occur in the time evolution. We take into account the quantum fluctuations within the truncated Wigner approximation. We observe that the quasiperiodic behavior still persists for a single realization that represents a typical experimental outcome, but ensemble averages show various manifestations of quantum fluctuations. Quantum effects become more prominent when the effective interaction strength is increased.

Classical and quantum dynamics of pulsating instability in a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a one dimensional optical lattice in the limit of weak atom-atom interactions. Numerically we find that a BEC may develop a pulsating instability in which atoms nearly periodically collect themselves into a pulse and subsequently disperse back into the initial homogeneous state. A qualitative explanation of the quasi-periodic behavior is given by drawing an analogy with a double-well system. In an extension we introduce quantum effects approximately within Truncated Wigner Approximation (TWA). In pure classical mean field theory the condensate shows an undamped pulsating instability, whereas we have observed a damping in the oscillation when we average over many stochastic realizations.

Pulsating instability of a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice

We find numerically that in the limit of weak atom-atom interactions a Bose-Einstein condensate in an optical lattice may develop a pulsating dynamical instability in which the atoms nearly periodically form a peak in the occupation numbers of the lattice sites, and then return to the unstable initial state. Multiple peaks behaving similarly may also occur. Simple arguments show that the pulsating instability is a remnant of integrability, and give a handle on the relevant physical scales.

Collective molecule formation in a degenerate Fermi gas via a Feshbach resonance

We model collisionless collective conversion of a degenerate Fermi gas into bosonic molecules via a Feshbach resonance, treating the bosonic molecules as a classical field and seeding the pairing amplitudes with random phases. A dynamical instability of the Fermi sea against association into molecules initiates the conversion. The model qualitatively reproduces several experimental observations {[Regal et al., Nature {\bf 424}, 47 (2003)]}. We predict that the initial temperature of the Fermi gas sets the limit for the efficiency of atom-molecule conversion.
